PolyU Seminar on GenAI: Opportunities and Challenges

The PolyU seminar named “GenAI: Opportunities and Challenges” was organized by Faculty of Science, PolyU on 8 Jan 2024. Dr. Dennis Ong is guest speaker who is a Technology Executive at Amazon Web Services (AWS) focusing on AI and cloud transformation for Fortune 100 companies.

This seminar aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of Generative AI (GenAI), fostering a deeper understanding of its capabilities, challenges and potential for positive transformation while emphasizing the critical need for ethical and responsible implementation in an ever-evolving technological landscape.

Firstly, Dr. Dennis Ong introduced AI from expert system to neural network and deep learning. There were four types of learning included supervised learning, semi-supervised learning, unsupervised learning and unsupervised learning in real life.

Then Dr. Ong briefed the Generative AI from word vector to LLM and adaption, then application such as ChatGPT.

Word vector is important for the response by ChatGPT based on prompt leading to which cluster. The important paper from Google named “Attention is all you need” in 2017 explained the transformer.

And then he briefed the how large language model (LLM) functioned. It predicted the next word based on your input statement.

After that Dr. Ong explained ChatGPT 3.5 through Reinforcement Learning Human Feedback that used human feedback to optimize ML models to self-learn more efficiently.

He also mentioned Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) that combined the strengths of both retrieval- and generative-based artificial intelligence (AI) models. That prompt plus enhanced content from knowledge sources as input to LLM.

Finally, he briefed different potential applications of GenAI including marketing, code generation, etc.

However, Generative AI had associated with different risks including poorly understood, data privacy, hallucination, biased, job loss and copyrights, etc.

Lastly, Dr. Ong encouraged us to unlock innovation opportunities from GenAI such as co-pilot working with GenAI. Life-long learning is most important to adopt AI era he said.

Before end of seminar, he asked us to discuss the application topics with other participants in the class.

During Q&A, I had asked questions about patent using OpenAI and the accuracy of Dall-e for visualizing the new idea.

At the end, I took a photo with Dr. Dennis Ong for memory.

Rebranding Project Workshop of HKCTC

The Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification (HKCTC) has engaged the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) for a rebranding project focusing on redefining the visual identity and communication strategies of the Council. Members of HKCTC and Panel on Manpower Development were invited to participate in the rebranding project by (1) completing an online brand perception survey and (2) joining the co-design workshop on 3 January 2024. I arrived the venue in PolyU Jockey Club. Innovation Tower.

Firstly, I met Dr. John Ho both of us waiting in the meeting room but it had been changed to another place! Then Mr. Steven Chan led us to the venue in ground floor.

In the beginning, Ms. Erika Ho introduced the design research workshop to us. There are six sessions within 3.5 hour.

The workshop roadmap was described including Brand Perception, Empathy Mapping, Persona Development, Value Proposition, User Journey and Shaping the Future Experience.

During the exercise, we took a photo for memory. Our team’s role on T&C service provider and we selected the role as laboratory boss

(Left: I, Mr. KW Chen, Dr. George HK Lau, Mr. Joseph Poon (Fugro), Mr. Bobbie Cheung (Gov Lab) and Mr. Henry Chiu (SCL))

Dr. Doria Wong’s team role is general users.

Dr. John Ho’s team role works as students.

Our teams’ exercise on Empathy Map Canvas and Persona.

After that we were invited to present our ideas. I presented in the first team as boss of T&C service provider.

Then Dr. Emmie Ho and Dr. Daria Wong presented in the second team.

The last team was presented by Mr. Trevor Lee and Ms. Pearl Tse.

Some ideas were found very interested such as government provided infrastructure for compression gas and dangerous good storage in the industrial building, ChatGPT answer customer enquiry accuracy and free, as well as, introduced real and positive information for T&C industry to young people/students, etc. Hopefully our ideas could help to rebranding HKCTC.

My 16 years Quality Related Activities Summary and Analysis (2008-2023)

I always summarized my whole years’ quality related activities at the end of each year since 2008. It is my 17 years to do this summary and analyzed here for reference. My quality related activities are classified as 7 different types and they are “Seminar/Webinar”, “Training/Workshop”, “Visit”, “Conference”, “Invited Speaker”, “Teaching Course” and “Professional Gathering” where “Arrange Visit to HKSTP” is stopped since 2019 (not considered anymore). The following diagram showed the overall activities from 2008 to 2023. The top frequency year is in 2015.

For pie chart, the top three activities in 15 years period are Seminar/Webinar (42%), Professional Gathering (21%) and Conference (13%). It is my learning practice through seminar/webinar. Networking with different professional is the second and the third is attending conference including local and international. I have attended ANQ Congress for 20 years since 2003. Other activities including visit (10%), attending training/workshop (7%) and to be invited as speaker (6%), as well as, performed training course (1%).

The following analysis diagram separated each activities by years. Since the top two activities (Seminar/Webinar and Professional Gathering) are compared high frequency (within 20 to 60 per year), it is separated from other activities to draw another diagram. The other activities are drawn into the last diagram (below 20 per year). It is easier to observe the variation by year.

In the coming year, I will still attend quality related activities that I am interested in, as well as, to share for different quality professional in HKSQ, ANQ, ASQ and IAQ, etc. One of trend of my studies will be shift from quantitative to qualitative.
