PolyU Open Forum - Entrepreneurship in GBA driving the changes in Technology, Business and Society

The Open Forum named “Entrepreneurship in Greater Bay Area (GBA) driving the changes in Technology, Business and Society” organized by Department of Computing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 17th Nov 2018.  The City University of Hong Kong Engineering Doctorate Society (CityU EngD Society) and Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) were supporting organization.  This open forum aimed to share scholars and professionals views on how we can grow this GBA together, driving the changes in technology, business and society. I met Dr. Thomas Chan and took a photo together.


Then I took a photo with CityU EngD cohorts Dr. Walter Fung and Dr. Pang for memory. 


Dr. Hongyi SUN (Asso. Professor, SEEM Dept., CityU) supported the forum.

Before the forum start, Dr. Herbert Yeung (President, CityU EngD Society) and Dr. Walter Fung took a photo in front of the banner.


The first speaker was Mr. Joseph Chan (Founder and CEO, AsiaPay Group) and his topic entitled “E-Payment in Greater China and Asia”.  Firstly, Mr. Chan briefed the background and introduced the new era of ePayment that focused on different technologies including FPS/QR Open API, 3D Security 2.0, Smart POS, Blockchain, Big Data, VR, AI and Biometric Recognition, etc.  Application was found in Mobile plus Retail Payment.


HKSQ/Minitab/TQM Seminar on Asset Management and Reliability: Machine Learning + AI

The seminar named “Asset Management and Reliability: Machine Learning + AI” coorganized by HKSQ, Minitab and TQM held on 17th Nov 2018. Before the seminar, I took a photo with Dr. Aaron Tong (Former chairman, HKSQ). 


HKSQ exco team took a group photo. Dr. Jane Wong (Exco member, HKSQ) joined the second part of the seminar.  Since the seminar was too attractive for our members, it separated into two session with three speakers (09:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. / 11:30 a.m. – 02:00 p.m.).

I met Mr. Henry Li (Chairman, IISE)).


Before the seminar start, three guest speakers took a group photo.


Firstly, Dr. Aaron Tong gave a welcome speech and introduced the seminar to all participants.


Mr. Ming Dong (Senior Technical Training Manager, Minitab Pty Ltd) was the first speaker and his presentation entitled “Using Minitab and Machine Learning Tools to Increase Maintenance Reliability and Reduce Defective Products”. The main message of his talk included the current state of asset, asset management system and reliability applied into business.


Mr. Dong explained Reliability that was “The probability (0~1) that a system or product would perform its intended function under normal operation conditions for a specified period of time”.  There had four reasons to analyze reliability included “Predicting product reliability”, “Predicting or assessing warranty costs”, “Assessing the effect of proposed design changes” and “Assessing whether customers’ needs are met”.  Then he introduced the Bathtub Mode to under the shelf life.

HKSQ Seminar on Quality Innovation from i4.0 to Q4.0

The 3rd World Summit for Chinese Quality (WSCQ) was organized by World Alliance for Chinese Quality (WACQ) and held from 8th to 9th Nov 2018 in Singapore. HKSQ was one of founding members of WACQ and arranged the seminar named “Quality Innovation: From i4.0 to Q4.0” on 16th Nov 2018.  This seminar aimed to share a presentation delivered at the Summit included introduction of the World Summit for Chinese Quality, Quality Innovation tools development, and Industry 4.0 (i4.0) which is based on Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) approach, as well as, Quality 4.0 proposed by ASQ and IAQ experts. The impact of AI on industry and quality management were also discussed.  In the beginning, HKSQ exco member and guest took a photo for memory.

Before the talk, I introduced the events in the World Quality Month which posted into HKSQ website.  And then I briefed the formation of WACQ and its former organization through Chinese Quality Forum since 2012.  Pre-WACQ had established in 206.  


Then I (Chairman, HKSQ) started my talk and briefed quality innovation definition and tools development trends from four industrial revolution stages.


I also introduced three of important innovation tools and methodology included TRIZ, Innovation Culture and Extenics from Russia, USA and China, respectively.


The integrated Management System between Quality and Innovation were mentioned. It employed ISO 9001:2015 and CEN/TS 16555-1.  In near future, we would use ISO 50501 Innovation Management System.  Recently, it was renumbering to ISO 56000 series.  


After that I introduced the Industry 4.0 (i4.0) which was learnt from Fraunhofer IPT.  One of most important idea on i4.0 was Digital Horizontal and Vertical Integration.  Which was not only organization itself but included supplier and customer systems.

Visit to Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (港珠澳大橋)

Minda and I with Father-in-law, Mother-in-law as well as Uncle and Aunt from USA visited Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge on 15th Nov 2018.  Since four people are over 80 years old, we booked a van with Hong Kong and Zhuhai license for transportation.  Firstly, we went to Minda’s parent home and then went to hotel for uncle and aunt.


Some of connecting bridges in Hong Kong side were not completed.


It seems some bus terminals.



We went into the artificial island (人工島) housing the Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities (HKBCF).


It is a long tunnel.


The bridge with Chinese knot named “Concentric knot” (同心結).



We were arriving the Zhuhai Port.

CityU the 1st Workshop on Financial Data Analysis

The 1st Workshop on Financial Data Analysis was co-organized by Hong Kong Institute for Data Science (HKIDS) and School of Data Science, CityU held on 14th Nov 2018.  The workshop aimed to bring together a unique group of active researchers from academia and industry to share with each other the latest research on the fusion of data science and finance. All participants had a group photo for memory.


Before the workshop, I have took a photo with Prof. Duan Li (Acting Dean and Chair Professor of Operations Research, School of Data Science).


I met Dr. Inez M. Zwetsloot (Assistant Professor, SEEM) and we had attended ANQ Congress 2017 in Nepal together.


I also took a photo with Dr. Wen Zhang (張雯) (Senior Manager, Vector Lab, Risk Management Department, JD Finance (京東金融)) for memory.


In the beginning, Prof. Duan Li gave welcome address. He briefed the aim of the workshop and introduced School of Data Science.


The first speaker was Prof. Tony He (University of Technology Sydney) and his topic entitled “Information Diffusion and Speed Competition”. He briefed the Publicly available information for Trader and Firm.

The 3rd World Summit for Chinese Quality (WSCQ) – Day 2 (Technical Visit)

The 3rd World Summit for Chinese Quality (WSCQ) was organized by Pre-World Alliance for Chinese Quality (WACQ) (全球華人品質聯盟()), co-organized by Singapore Quality Institute (SQI) at NTU@one-north campus, Executive Centre on 8 & 9 Nov 2018.  The founding members of Pre-World Alliance for Chinese included China Association for Quality (CAQ), Chinese Society for Quality (CSQ), Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and Singapore Quality Institute (SQI).  This Alliance was established after the 3rd Chinese Quality Forum (CQF) in Beijing in 2015.  In Day 2, we visited Association of Aerospace Industries (Singapore) (AAIS) and Rolls-Royce factory in Seletar Aerospace Park.  Minda and I arrived the visit site.


Looking outside, many private small aeroplanes were observed.


Mr. Jimson Ngiam (Director, Quality (Aerospace), Thales Solutions Asia Pte Ltd) gave introduction of Association of Aerospace Industries (Singapore) (AAIS) to us.


AAIS had 130 members from aerospace companies and supporting industry including Maintenance, Repair and Operation (MRO), R&D, Training and education (e.g. NTU), etc.


They duties included voice of industry, facilitate business and engender community.


Then Mr. Ngiam introduced AAIS Digitalization Programme from Awareness to Benchmarking to Consultation & Development and then Execution.


During Q&A session, I asked how to reduce resistant if IT system change for airport.  He said change management was very important especially on people’s mindset change.  We needed to give roadmap and risk assessment.


Mr. GE Tan (陳敬賢) (Chairman, SQI) and Ms. Wang Lilin (王麗林) (Deputy Secretary General, CAQ)) represented WACQ to present souvenir to Mr. Jimson Ngiam.


Then we took a group photo for memory.

The 3rd World Summit for Chinese Quality (WSCQ) – Day 1 (Part B)

The 3rd World Summit for Chinese Quality (WSCQ) was organized by Pre-World Alliance for Chinese Quality (WACQ) (全球華人品質聯盟()), co-organized by Singapore Quality Institute (SQI) at NTU@one-north campus, Executive Centre on 8 Nov 2018.  The founding members of Pre-World Alliance for Chinese included China Association for Quality (CAQ), Chinese Society for Quality (CSQ), Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and Singapore Quality Institute (SQI).  This Alliance was established after the 3rd Chinese Quality Forum (CQF) in Beijing in 2015.  During the afternoon session, HKSQ team took a group photo in NTU@One-North Alumni House with WSCQ banner.

In afternoon, there were two parallel sessions. I was presented in Session A and Minda attended this session.
Session B
Dr. KS Chin (Former Chairman, HKSQ) was the session chair.


The first speaker in Session B was Mr. Zhang Ligang (張立剛) and his presentation entitled “Exploration and Practice of Transformation and Upgrade of Urban Public Transportation Service” (城市公交服務實施轉型升級的探索與實踐).  Firstly, Mr. Zhang briefed their company’s development since 2000. 


Then Mr. Zhang mentioned the situation of service industry such as Urbanization, Information Technology, Knowledge Economic, Assistant Manufacturing Upgrade, Enhancing Life Quality and Job Creation.


However, Mr. Zhang shared some difficulties about their industry transformation included Staff Capability, Government Regulation, Slow Market Extension, Service Design behind the Customer requirement, and Traditional Management outdated. 


Finally, Mr. Zhang stated their transformation strategy included Staff Training, System Establishment, Management Upgrade and Technical Support.  At the end, he shared the transformation result involved National Quality Award, Public Transportation Award, Number 1 Brand, etc. 


The second speaker was Dr. Dennis Tien (田墨忠) (CSQ) and his topic was “Improve the quality of life of elder who living alone in Chinese areas” (提升華人地區獨居老人生活品質).  He said one of sad reasons of elder was lonely.
