Remember of Dr. Ivan Ng (HKSQ Former Co-opted Member)

A sorrow news received from Dr. KS Chin and Dr. Aaron Tong on 14^th Mar 2025 that Dr. Ivan CK Ng (HKSQ Former Co-opted Member from 2018 to 2021) passed away on 8^th Mar 2025. We lost a quality professional especially in six sigma methodology. He was DBA awarded by City University of Hong Kong in 2015. His study entitled “An Organizational Development Study of the Impact of Cultural Factors on the Implementation of the Six Sigma Methodology in Southern China”. On behalf of the HKSQ Executive Committee, I would like to express our deepest condolences to Dr Ng’s family, friends and colleagues. 

Dr. Ivan Ng shared his research in HKSQ seminar on 9^th Oct 2015 and we took a photo for memory at the end.

RIP Dr. Ivan Ng

Funeral Service was held on 29th March 2025 at 10:30 am in the Haven of Hope Christian Service Chapel. Dr. Aaron Tong and Dr. KS Chin on behalf of HKSQ attended Dr. Ivan Ng's Memorial Service.

Dr. Ivan Ng led us to have seafood dinner several years ago, which left us with wonderful memories..

Remember Peter Merrill, ASQ & ISO Innovation Professional

A very sad news received from Peter Merrill’s LinkedIn that Mr. Peter Merril passed away on 5 Jan 2025. On behalf of the Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ), I would like to express my deepest condolences to Peter Merrill's family, friends and colleagues. It is very pity that we missed Global Innovation Guru in the world. When I first met Peter Merrill was in ASQ Fellow Lunch 2016 and then I attended his talk named “Self-Managed Team build an Innovation Culture” in ASQ World Conference on Quality and Improvement (WCQI) 2016.

I brought his books named “Innovation Never Stop” and “Do It Right The Second Time”. After that I used it as one of key elements in my innovation course for introducing innovation culture in universities.

In 2020, it was still in COVID period, I attended Peter Merrill’s Webinar entitled “ISO 56000 – Build innovation into your organization”.

Moreover, Peter Merrill was one of guest speakers for ISO Webinar on ISO 56001 and the Framework for Auditors for CB members on justification for ISO17021-x for IMS was held on 10^th July 2024.

ISO TC 279 LinkedIn posted that Peter Merrill was one of ISO Excellence Awardees during the celebration of the international launch of ISO56001 in Lima – Peru on 17^th Oct 2024. 

Peter Merrill was one of guru affected my Innovation journey. I remembered that he gave me advice when ASQ asked experts to join ISO TC 279. He told me that it needed to inform local government for nomination. Then I forwarded ASQ invitation letter to ITC, HKSAR and then they nominated me as the 1^st and only one Hong Kong observer in ISO TC 279 Innovation Management. I also quoted his contribution in my talk for HKSQ Quality Month Seminar entitled “Background and Requirements of ISO 56001 Innovation Management System”.

Remember Mr. Peter Merrill’s contribution on innovation management in ISO TC 279. RIP.

Remember Dr. Joseph Leung, Past President of CityU EngD Society

A sad news received from Dr. Rocky Lam today that Dr. Joseph Leung (Past President and Director of CityU EngD Society) passed away on 15 July 2024. We lost an outstanding cohort in the CityU EngD Society. He was among the first cohort in the EngD Programme in 2003. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Dr. Joseph’s family, friends and colleagues.

(Dr. Joseph Leung gave speech in 2009. His topic named “Adoption of Enterprise Integration Modeling in the Design & Implementation of Knowledge Management System” in CityU.)

I took a photo with Joseph during the event named “Big Data & Analytics Forum 2017” in HKSTP. We have been colleagues of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation for a long time. 

Joseph had arranged EngD AGM 2017 in IVE. 

He led us to visit IVE.

Then we had dinner together. It is our last photo taken together.

We also met in CityU Eminence Society annual dinner 2017 and took a photo for memory. 

I found the SEM seminar photo that Dr. Joseph Leung on behalf of CityU EngD Society presented souvenir to Dr. W. H. Fok in 2008.

The earliest photo we took together was probably at the EngD New Year Party held at the Cyberport on December 31, 2007.

Remember Our Best Friend - Cecilia

A deeply sad news received that our best friend Cecilia (Ceci) passed away on the morning on 9^th July 2024. Ceci is very lively, cheerful, optimistic and perseverant girl we know. She is my wife best friend (閨蜜) and I met Ceci when I was dating Minda. Minda and I would like to express our sincere condolences to Ceci’s family, friends and colleagues.

In the morning, Minda wrote a message to inform all friends of Ceci. As knowing Ceci situation, Minda went to Australia with Ceci two sisters two weeks before.

Let's remember past events. In July 2006, Minda and Ceci visited Japan with their old colleagues.

Minda and I then decided to get married in Austria at the end of 2006 and Ceci arranged it for us. We went to Melbourne, Sydney and Tasmania. We took a photo at Sydney Olympic Park.

Take a ship ride to see the prison and play in the water on the way on 21 July 2006.

At our wedding, we took a photo with Ceci and her boyfriend.

We also took a photo outside the church park.

Remember Dr. H. Jame Harrington, ASQ & IAQ Quality Professional

A deeply sad news received from Acn. Lars Sorqvist (President, International Academy for Quality (IAQ)) on 10^th Jun 2024 that IAQ Honorary Academician Jim Harrington passed away on 7 Jun 2024 at 95 years old. On behalf of the Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ), I would like to express my sincere condolences to Dr. Jim Harrington’s family, friends and colleagues.

I found our first photo was taken in ASQ World Conference for Quality and Improvement (WCQI) 2011.

After 5 years, I also attended the WCQI 2016 and met Dr. Harrington again.

Roland and I also took a photo with him during IAQ General Meeting in 2016. He led the Innovation and Quality Think Tank (IQTT) at that time.

Recently, I met Dr. H. James Harrington online for webinars named “Using the ISO 56002 Innovation Management System” in 2022 and “Innovative for Success in the Disruptive Times” in 2020.

In 2011, my supervisor Dr. KS Chin elected as associate academician of IAQ and joined the general meeting. Dr. Harrington was here and sitting in the first seat on the left.

Remember Dr. Harrington’s contribution on quality and innovation management. RIP.
