My second retreat in COMP Dept., PolyU 2024

It is my second time to join the departmental retreat event from 21 to 22 May 2024. The retreat was held in the Song Shan Lake (松山湖) Hyatt Hotel for discussing teaching, research and academic activities in the first day.

After that we had dinner in the hotel. 

Dr. Henry demonstrated the 50^th anniversary theme song named “Hand in Hand” which was created by alumni.

In the next day, we visited Huawei European Town for signing MoU ceremony.

Dr. Walter Fung and I took a photo inside the hall for memory.

Our department head signed a MoU for future cooperation with Huawei.

Then we visited the town and riding a small train.

Mr. Vigor Fung (Sales Director) is one of representatives from Hong Kong office (middle one) to lead us for this trip.

In the train station, difference styles of building in different zones are showed.

Finally, we arrived Zone J for lunch.

Dr. Jeff Tang, Dr. Walter Fung, Dr. Richard Lui and I enjoyed a very good lunch buffet in Huawei European Town.

Huawei recognizes that it is difficult to predict when and where it will encounter black swans in its development process. However, Huawei can do its best to deploy talents in the habitat of black swans and capture the technological jumps that black swans may bring. So this black swan doll also named “Struggle Goose” (奮鬥鵝).

Visit to PolyU Industrial Center

Dr. Walter Fung (CityU EngD cohort) arranged a visit to PolyU Industrial Center for teaching and research facilities on 20^th Nov 2023. Many EngD cohorts joined this visit and I took a photo when we gathered. 

The first visit location is Hybrid Immersive Virtual Environment (HiVE) and we took a group photo in front of the banner. (Middle row right 2^nd - Dr. SC Ho is our leader for Industrial Center.)

Vicent and I enjoyed the 3D virtual environment.

The different 3D virtual environments were demonstrated including city, street, rural area and museum, etc.

And then we went to the AIR Lab that is a brand-new venue in PolyU where educators, makers and researchers from different disciplines can collaborate to apply AI and robots to solve real-world issues.

A robot programmed interaction activities with visitor such as dancing and play Tai Chi (太極).

I met my old friend Dr. C.C. Cheung and took a photo with Dr. Vincent Fung, Dr. Szeto Wing Hong and Dr. Gaby Kun.

After that we went to IoT Maker Lab.

There are many stations and mini 3D printer for students use.

Finally, we visited University Research Facility in 3D Printing. I had visited before in 2021.

Since I have class in evening, I left early. Tonight, I taught design thinking.

Two students formed a group and interviewed each other so as to collect their needs and exercised empathy.

Lastly, I selected some students to present their insight and proposed solutions.

Visit to JC Metal Finishing Co., Ltd. and WSI Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center

Dr. YC Chau, Dr. KS Chin and I visited JC Metal Finishing Co., Ltd. and WSI Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center on 5^th Jul 2023. We went to the mainland through Shenzhen Bay Port. I took a photo after the custom.

Firstly, we went to the CityU (Shenzhen) Research Institute Building for return some facilities.

Then we have lunch with Dr. Luk Chi Fai.

After the lunch, we visited JC Metal Finishing Co., Ltd.

Dr. Luk said their factory performed precision electro printing service and got AS 9100 and Nadcap certifications.

And then Dr. Luk briefed the JC Metal Finishing history and development milestone to us.

Their business scope included anodizing, zinc plating, electro polishing, etc.

After that he demonstrated their intelligent control center with digital kanban and different monitoring measures.

I visited their QC laboratory.

Finally, we visited the electro printing production line.

The second visit point is WSI Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center that demonstrated Intelligent Manufacturing (i4.0).

Firstly, the representative briefed their concept on smart manufacturing software systems.

Then we visited their STEAM product prototype. It is the simulation box for demonstrating of intelligent manufacturing process.

Finally, we visited their central control center.

In marketing department, we saw a smart slogan.

Lastly, we took a group photo with Mr. Luk’s brother (Left 1) for memory. Then we had dinner together and back to HK through Lok Ma Chau Control Point.

HKPC AI & 5G Workshop: Alibaba Damo Academy and Huawei (阿里巴巴達摩院及華為工作坊)

The AI & 5G Workshop to visit to Alibaba Damo Academy and Huawei was jointly organized by Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and HKAI Lab  on 30 Sep 2019. Artificial intelligence and 5G technology complement each other. Leading companies and 5G network providers in the field of artificial intelligence in the world have been clamoring for the 5G network generation. This visit ot Alibaba Dharma Institute and the Huawei Workshop aimed to enable the industry to master the solutions and trends of artificial intelligence and 5G integration development.  I took a photo with Taobao sculpture in front of the entry of Ali Center.

Different floor had different companies in the center. We went to the 9/F.  

In the beginning, Mr. Jeffrey Sit (General Manager, Smart Manufacturing and Mainland Business, HKPC) gave introductory speech on this workshop and visit.

Then Mr. Timothy Leung (Executive Director, HKAI Lab) gave a speech and he had been Ali-man before.  

Firstly, Dr. Zhang Lei (張磊) (达摩院城市大脑实验室高级研究员) introduced the AI Centre of Alibaba DAMO Academy. It is dedicated to exploring the unknown through scientific and technological research and innovation and founded on 11 Oct 2017.  He said his nickname in DAMO Academy was “Three Stone” (三石) and every staff had their nick name based on Martial Art Novel in the beginning.  However, almost all names had been used and then relaxed to other special nickname.

Then Dr. Zhang introduced the position of DAMO Academy that research for solving the problem with profit and fun.  Their visions are to live longer than Alibaba and service to the whole world at least upto 2 billion people, as well as, using technology to solve future problem.

And then Dr. Zhang demonstrated some applications in visual intelligent computing in DAMO Academy included video image process, medical image process, industrial inspection and City Brain.  One of examples is to change Jack Ma video frame automatically
