CityUHK (Dongguan) SYE2066 Last Lecture

 Prof. YC Chau and I serviced CityUHK (Dongguan) for the class of SYE 2066 “Professional Engineering Practice” in 2025. The last lecture for group project presentation was held on 6^th Dec 2025. We received a certificate of appreciation from the Academic Regulations and Records Office.

Before the lecture, Prof. YC Chau and I had breakfast in the student canteen.

In the beginning, Prof. YC Chau shared the AI generated video about the different between “Do the Thing Right” and “Do the Right Thing”. 

Then Prof. TIAN Xiaoyang (田潇阳) presented the appreciation certificate to Prof. YC Chau.

And then he also presented the certificate to me.

All students presented their group project which employed “Extension Innovation Method” to create the new product prototype.

At the end, students voted the top three products.

After the lecture, we went to Shenzhen Huaqiangbei (深圳華強北) for fixing my laptop.

We had late lunch in here.

And we had tea during the time of laptop fixing. Prof. YC Chau’s student joined us. They were students in the programme of Master of Science Venture Creation (MSVC).

Mr. Zhang Jiahao and YC shared their journey of the MSVC and TECH 300.

His team won the award from the 13rd Macao International Innovation and Invention Expo (MiiEX) 2025.

CityUHK (Dongguan) SYE2066 Guest Talk i4.0 & Startup

Dr. Vincent Fung was our industrial guest speaker in the class of SYE 2066 “Professional Engineering Practice”. Dr. Fung’s lecture entitled “Innovation and Technology in Engineering & Industry Transformation” was held on 29^th Nov 2025.

In the beginning, Dr. Vincent Fung introduced his background that he got EngD in PolyU and Constant at HKSTP, Chief Technology Advisor at QP Group, Deputy Chairman & Executive Director in Kin Yat Holdings Ltd. He had 40 years expertise in product design, mold design, NPI, production process and marketing in the manufacturing industry in HK, Mainland China, Asian countries, US and Canada. Then he briefed the transformation journey from the traditional manufacturing to i4.0.

And then he introduced his company old products including toys and home appliances.

After that he mentioned the motivation for transformation and voice of customers.

One of his proudest products is the robotic vacuum cleaner.

He also stated that they invited quality expert Prof. Fugee Tsung (also exco member of HKSQ) to provide six sigma and lean training to their company engineers.

Finally, he shared smart manufacturing for the toy “Jenga”. Using AI for inspection enhanced the accuracy and efficiency.

In the second part, Dr. Vincent Fung introduced Startup and briefed the ABC concepts including Auto, Build and Cell.

He also shared to students about I&T life cycle and double valley of death.

Then Dr. Fung briefed the evolution of smart baby product.

Lastly, I on behalf of SYE Dept and CityUHKDG presented the appreciated certificate to Dr. Vincent Fung.

Yesterday morning, Vincent and I had breakfast in CityUHK and took a shuttle to go to CityUHKDG. (Remark: Following the devastating fire in Tai Po, CityUHK lowered its flag to half-mast.)

When we arranged CityUHKDG, we took a photo with Prof. Ron Kwok and Prof. Alan Chan.

When we visited the campus, we meeting the book fair and selected some books for students.

After that we enjoyed the coffee in the Kcoffee.

Finally, we visited the library.

In the evening, I visited Vincent’s home in Dongguau.

We arrived his apartment.

Lastly, we had hot pot dinner here before returning to CityUHKDG.

CityUHK (Dongguan) ICAUAS 2025 & SYE2066 Class

On 25^th Oct 2025, the 3^rd International Conference on Advanced Unmanned Aerial System (ICAUAS) was held in CityUHK (Dongguan). I took a photo in front of the banner after my course for SYE2066 in this morning. 

In my class, I introduced AI and advanced technology to ITME students.

During the class, I demonstrated different technology videos.

After the survey, students showed interested in Big data, Deep Learning/Machine Learning, AIoT and AI Robot, as well as, Search Technology.

In the ICAUAS venue, Prof. YC Chau and I took a photo with Dr. Guangjun Yang (Assoc. Director, Research Office, CityUHKDG) (Right 1) and Dr. Xing Tan (Manager, Research Office, CityUHKDG) (Left 1).

Many different types of drones demonstrated.

YC and I was invited to have lunch in the conference.

The buffet was good!

CityUHK (Dongguan) ITME Students Visit to ATL

Prof. YC Chau and I had taught the program named “Bachelor of Engineering in Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering (BEng ITME) 工學士 (智能製造工程學)” in CityUHK Donggang (DG) in 2025. Our lecture named “SYE 2066: Professional Engineering Practice” and included one industrial visit. Prof. Chau arranged the visit to Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) on 11^th Oct 2025.

In the travel bus, Prof. YC Chau briefed the company background and rules of visit to students.

I took a photo inside the bus with students.

ATL is near to CityU and only 30 min travel time.

We arrived and meet Dr. Luk Chi Fai and Dr. CK Cheung as well as management of ATL.

YC and I took a photo in front of the welcome electronic banner.

In the beginning, Prof. YC Chau gave welcoming speech to students.

Then Ms. Yu introduced the ATL products and service.

ATL is the world’s leading producer and innovator of lithium-ion batteries.

Dr. Mike Chang was the spirit leader in ATL and his history was posted for memory.

We were in the hall.

Ms. Shelly Yu briefed the arrangement to us.

Then Dr. Rock Tao used some stories to introduce the growth of ATL. First, he remembered Dr. Mike Chang story for starting ATL (永不言 “氣”). Then he told us how to receive the Apple’s business ( “i” 由芯生), and then he explained how to get the opportunities and avoid disaster like Note 7 (“芯” 火燎原). After that he said the path to be the number one in this field (為 “鋰” 把關). Finally, Dr. Rock Tao explained how hard to achieve the requirement of automotive requirement from BMW (“馬” 到功成). 

Lastly, he summarized their experience of Innovation through six thinkings (Think holistic、in-depth、out-of-box、discipline、just fit and people) and seven persistence principles.

Then another engineering representative of ATL introduced their digital transformation and different systems.

Finally, Prof. YC Chau concluded some learning points to students.

We took a group photo together.

Then we started to visit the production lines and we needed to wear shoe covers. (No photo taken inside)

After the visit, we had lunch in the staff canteen.

We took a photo during the lunch.

Then we walked back to the main building.

We passed by the Central Laboratory, which reminded me of a visit I had long ago to TDK's laboratory, where the facilities were as advance as Science Park.

Finally, Prof. YC Chau presented the CityUHKDG appreciated certificate to Dr. Rock Tao for appreciating this factor visit arrangement.

Afterwards, all CityUHKDG employees took a group photo with Dr. Rock Tao.

Lastly, a group photo in front of the ATL main enter was taken for memory.

The old SAE colleagues and friends took a group photo at the end.

Dr. Luk Chi Fai and I were back to Hong Kong and saw Qianhai Snow World in the way. We had very nice visit today and learnt much from ATL.
