IAQ General Meeting in San Diego, USA 2024

The IAQ General Meeting was held on 15^th & 16^th May 2024 in San Diego, USA. I had joined the second day online. I captured a group photo for memory. 

In the beginning, Acn. Lars Sörqvist (President, IAQ) gave opening speech and introduced the agenda.

Then Lars introduced the IAQ Doctoral Academy which aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice of QM through world class research projects by PhD students on the global platform. He on behalf of Ram for briefing the new member process in the Membership Transition Process Manual such as from associate to academician. 

After that Grace Branna presented the Publication Committee Report.

And also discussed the IAQ Book Series.

Catherine Chan then presented Communication Committee Report and committee approach.

Since I had meeting on the morning that I left early.

PolyU Seminar on the Metaverse: AI-Powered Universe of Persistent Digital Twins

The PolyU Distinguished Seminar Series on DSAI (both online and offline) named “The Metaverse: AI-Powered Universe of Persistent Digital Twins” was organized by COMP Depart., PolyU on 10^th May 2024. A digital twin is a digital replication of a living or non-living physical entity. A Metaverse encompasses an interconnected realm of persistent Digital Twins. Prof. Abdulmotaleb El Saddik was the guest speaker (Distinguished Professor, Mohamed Bin Zayed University of AI). 

Firstly, Prof. Saddik mentioned the opportunity and challenges of different technologies including Digit Twin and Web 3.0, etc. In the past, there are less publication related to metaverse until 2022-2023 that spike goes beyond thousands of publications.

The metaverse can be defined as a digital environment that uses extended reality (AR/VR, Haptics), AI, IoT, Cloud Computing, NFTs, Physic/game engines and blockchain, along with concepts from social media, to create spaces for rich user interaction mimicking the real world. Prof. Saddik said “The metaverse is the universe of Persistent Digital Twins.” Then the timeline of the development of metaverse from 1991 to 2022 was described.

And then he mentioned the Mixed Reality (MR) that MR is the merging of real world and virtual worlds to produce a new environment where physical and digital objects can co-exist and interact. The working principle of head-Mounted display VR device was discussed.

After that Prof. Saddik introduced the evolution of the Web from 1.0 to 3.0. And Non-fungible token (NFT) usage in a VR-based metaverse was mentioned.

Prof. Saddik then introduced Digital Twin and Metaverse through his paper named “A digital twin is a digital replica of a living or non-living physical entity” (2018).

Finally, he stated the metaverse is the universe of Persistent Digital Twins through different technologies including cybersecurity, blockchain, big data, AI and multi-media interaction. 

Some cases were demonstrated such as bridge from reality and virtue using Robotic Arms.

Lastly, Prof. Saddik briefed some potential use in the Metaverse, technology research challenges and societal research challenges.

At the end, he showed the prediction timeline that AR/VR would become mainstream at 2030.

HKQF the 15th TIC-ITAC Meeting 2024

The 15th meeting of Industry Training Advisory Committee for Testing, Inspection & Certification Industry (TIC-ITAC) under Hong Kong Qualification Framework (HKQF) was held on 7th May 2024. We took a group photo for memory.

I attended the meeting and sit between Dr. Tommy Lo and Ir. WK Lee.

Dr. Jane Wong (Chairman, HKSQ) and Dr. Daria Wong and Ms. Bess Choi also attended.

We had discussed the career path scheme such as construction testing.

Mr. Ben Tsang (SGS) and Mr. Dominic Lam (CMA Testing) both attended and they are HKSQ corporate members.

Matthew briefed the last year activities by HKQF including workshop.

One of key achievements is added the HKQF requirement in Housing Authority tender.

Lastly, we had discussed the RPL and applied learning courses, as well as, the coming TIC ITAC 15^th anniversary.

After the meeting, Dominic and I had a tea in Taiwan style restaurant.

Advanced Class II for I Ching (易經高班II)–Lecture 6

Minda and I joined Prof. Peng’s (彭泓基教授) advanced class II for I Ching (易經高班) the last lecture (Lecture 6) on 4^th Apr 2024. We had joined the Introductory Class of “I Ching” since Mar 2023. For one year long study, we have entered the I Ching world. 

Prof. Peng firstly explained the fortune of year 2024 using divination (占卜) by Mr. Sham. 

Every year starts on the beginning of spring. For 2024, the beginning of spring is on 4^th Feb 2024. Prof. Peng introduced some apps to calculate the lunar calendar.

After calculation, the fortune of year’s hexagram is Fire and Thunder Bite Hexagram (火雷噬嗑). The fourth Yao is Moving Yao (動爻).

The overall phenomenon change from the Bite Hexagram to be Limping Hexagram(蹇卦) by mutual hexagram (互卦) and finally to be Swallowing Hexagram (頤卦) by changed the Moving Yao (動爻). It concluded that this year has many twists and turns, difficult steps. We need carefully for speech and diet.

After that Prof. Peng demonstrated how to predict New China’s national destiny.

Using the Plum Bossom Changing Maths (梅花易數), the fortune of China was calculated. It is Xun Gua (巽卦) indicating the soft wind. This may indicate that China is increasing its influence around the world, but it is facing difficult times due to pressure from the United States. 

The last case is to predict the fortune of Hong Kong. 

Using the Plum Bossom Changing Maths (梅花易數), started from the date of Hong Kong's return. It got the Limping Hexagram(蹇卦).

It demonstrates from Limping Hexagram(蹇卦) to Before Completion Hexagram (未濟卦) and then to Grouping Hexagram (比卦); indicating that Hong Kong need to reform, transform and cooperate with others.

And then we also tried to predict the fortune of 2025.

Finally, Prof. Peng discussed the Plum Bossom Changing Maths (梅花易數) again.

It is randomly triggering a hexagram based on Innate gossip (先天八卦). Hexagram (卦) divided by 8 and Moving Yao (動爻) divided by 6.

Lastly, Prof. Peng introduced new explanation method using Body (體) and Application (用). Moving Yao (動爻) is Application and no changed hexagram is Body. The explanation using five elements promoting and constraining mutually (五行相生相剋). 

The calculation of the Plum Bossom Changing Maths (梅花易數) used the lunar calendar.

We had a very happy discussion during the class.

At the end, we took a group photo for memory.

After the class, we also had lunch together.
