Visit to Vitargent Laboratory for starting COMP Student’s Capstone Project

I lead my student Mr. AU YEUNG Tsz Pui to visit the Vitargent’s laboratory on 2 Sep 2025. It is related to his capstone project named “AI-powered system to automate the detection of developmental defects in zebrafish embryos”. We would like to use machine learning to identify photos of fish embryos after toxicity testing. When arrived, we took a photo in front of the company. 

Then Dr. Xueping Chen introduced their laboratory daily operation.

And she showed and explained some image results.

Her staff demonstrated the testing and counting the results.

Finally, we took a group photo inside the laboratory.

After that Minda and I invited Dr. Xueping Chen to have lunch together.

Visit Vitargent (International) Biotechnology Ltd for COMP Students’ Capstone Project

Minda and I invited Dr. Xueping Chen to have lunch in FoodLab, Science Park on 24^th Mar 2025. When I serviced in HKSTP, I assisted Vitargent to develop ISO 17025 Laboratory QMS and achieved HOKLAS accreditation. Then we discussed the possibility to have capstone project for computer student about vision analysis by deep learning. 

After lunch, Xueping led me to visit her laboratory. 

We took photos inside the laboratory.

She showed me some photos of Fish Embryos and it is good opportunities for machine recognition through AI.

Finally, I visited her office and observed her professional achievement.

Moreover, I found two old photos we took during HOKLAS assessment in 2012.

I also met my old colleague in EPA Centre, CityU Mr. Henry Lee when arrived Science Park.

CityU ITME Students visit Sanwa Biotech Limited

Dr. KS Chin, Dr. YC Chau, Dr. Vincent Fung and I led students from “Bachelor of Engineering in Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering (BEng ITME) 工學士 (智能製造工程學)” to visit Sanwa Biotech Limited on 9^th Nov 2021. It was one of two visits from the course of ASDE 2066 “Professional Engineering Practice”. We took a group photo for memory. 

Our travel bus started from CityU to Sanwa Biotech Limited in Fo Tan.

We arrived and went into the industrial building.

Then Mr. William Yim (Executive Chairman & CTO, Sanwa Biotech Limited) led us into meeting room.

Since many student, we separated into two meeting room using zoom to connect both room students.

In the beginning, Mr. William Yim introduced his previous experience on micro joining technology including laser micro machining.

When he briefed the biomedical application using UV short pulse laser, he said this technology inspired him to do the existing business.

And then he developed microfluidic chip for Lab-on-Chip Systems.  Now he developed to the 3^rd generation.

After that he shared his company’s roadmap since 2012 and we observed many certificates obtained such as ISO 13485, CE mark, and applying FDA. 

Finally, we separated two team of students to visit different part of Sanwa. Mr. William Yim demonstrated his product to students.

He also introduced the cleanroom that is ISO Level 7 (Class 10,000).

The automatic assembly machine was showed and explained. Since the installation was not completed, so we could observe it very closely without wearing cleanroom cloth. After the machine installation, the ISO Level 7 cleanroom would be operated.

In the future, visitors were only observation this operation by monitor.

During visit, I observed a slogan very inspiriting that “Dream Big, Work Hard, Stay Focused, and Surround Yourself with Good People”.

CityU Eminence Society – Visit to BME Laboratory

The CityU Eminence Society (CES) University Collaborative Project Work Group 2 arranged a visit to laboratories of Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) by Dr. YC Chau to seek further collaboration opportunities between CES and BME.  Dr. Ricky Yeung (Laboratory Manager, BME) was our old friend and he led this visit for us.

Firstly, Dr. Ricky Yeung introduced their 3D Laser Micro Fabrication and Compact NanoImprint Tool (CNI) to us. It could development micro/nano structure for cell development or fluid flow. 

Then he briefed the micro robot which could carry drug and using magnetic field to lead its movement.  Now, it was using zebrafish for testing. 

After that we visited the Robotics, Control and Biotechnology Research Laboratory.

We observed different instruments included confocal microscope, laser lithography system, etc.  

Finally, he demonstrated the Compact Magnet Resonance Imaging System and showed sample location.

We appreciated Dr. Ricky Yeung and Dr. YC Chau arranged this visit for Univerity Collaborative Project Work Group 2 so we had more insight and understanding on BME and its research capability.

Visit to State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology (CUHK) and promoting Extenics

I visited Prof. Lam Hon-Ming (Director of the State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology (The Chinese University of Hong Kong) and Professor of the School of Life Sciences at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)) office and State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology (CUHK) on 6^th May 2019.  Prof. Lam introduced his research on soybean and I briefed the Extension Innovation Method.  We were seeking any synergy to cross-over Agrobiotechnology and Extenics.  

Prof. Lam Hon-Ming lead an international collaborative research team completed the world’s first reference-grade wild soybean genome which provides an important tool for soybean genetic research internationally.  It lays a solid foundation for comparative genomic studies of legume and soybean improvement programmes, and helps to improve the tolerance and other agronomic traits of soybean.

Then I visited his laboratory SKL of Agrobiotechnology and we took a photo in front of the laboratory.

Many equipment inside the laboratory were observed.

Prof. Lam had another laboratory named “Plant Molecular Biology and Genetics Research Laboratory”.

Pre-visit meeting for HKSTP & CityU

I met Ms. Elaine Cheung (Executive Officer, Office of the Vice-President (Research & Technology) on 19^th April 2018 afternoon to discuss the arrangement of HKSTP chairperson and BoD members to visit CityU in Jun 2018.  We took a photo in front of the office for memory.

The story for this arrangement started that I joined the celebration dinner with new Council Chairman of CityU - Mr. Lester G Huang on 5^th Mar 2018.  When we were chatting about government committed to invest on Innovation and Technology development in Hong Kong, Mr. Lester G Huang would like to invite HKSTP chairperson and related executives to visit CityU new facilities.

Then I passed his message to Mrs. Fanny LAW FAN (Chairperson, HKSTP) during Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park Limited House Warming on 14^th Mar 2018.  Then Mrs. Fanny LAW FAN expressed her interest on animal laboratories and KTO in CityU.

After that I had joined CityU Distinguished Alumni Award Presentation Ceremony on 22^nd Mar 2018 and I met Mr. Lester G Huang again.  I passed our chairlady’s interest to him for further arrangement.

Lastly, I got the preliminary arrangement and met Mrs. Fanny LAW FAN (Chairperson, HKSTP) during HKSTP Annual Dinner on 23^rd Mar 2018.  She assigned one of my colleagues to contact all BoD members for this visit arrangement.

The success factors for this high level visit arrangement for both parties I concluded as following three points:

1.      High position people involvement (they may know each other)

2.      Common interest (align both interests and become win-win situation)

3.      Communication (someone as bridge)

Visit to CityU Centre for Biosystems, Neuroscience and Nanotechnology

After Chinese New Year holiday, we had an annual gathering for EPA Centre colleagues.  One of old colleagues who served in the Centre for Biosystems, Newuroscience and Nanotechnology (CBNN) which belongs to College of Science and Engineering, CityU.

CBNN merges nanotechnology with biosystems and neuroscience to create a revolutionary impact on many aspects of medicine.  It had a cleanroom to develop materials, structures, devices, and microsystems with nanometer precision for single molecule and cell interactions.

The Centre led by different professors in different department included EE, BMS, BCH and AP, etc.  Photo showed the research office for researchers use.

Meeting with CityU President and HeathBaby Group for Potential Collaboration

I am honor to be a facilitator to organize a meeting between HeathBaby Group and the School of Veterinary Medicine, City University of Hong Kong on 28 May 2015. HeathBaby Hong Kong Biotech Limited is located in Science Park and I knew their head court in Taiwan to have animal vaccine company, so that I try to link up the School of Veterinary Medicine in CityU with HeathBaby Group in Taiwan through the meeting with CityU President – Prof. Way Kuo for potential collaboration.

The representatives of HeathBaby Group are Mr. Chang Hsiu Kang (Chairman / Pharmacist, HeathBaby Group) (Right), Ms. Circle Yuen (COO, HeathBaby Hong Kong Biotech Limited) (Middle) and Dr. Frank C.J. Chang (Assistant Manager, R&D, Reber Genetics Co., Ltd.) (Left).

Firstly, we met President and introduced both HeathBaby Group and the university background respectively.

After that we went to the office of the School of Veterinary Medicine and met Dr. Brown Richard Arthur Llewellyn (Associate Director (Production Animal) Professional Veterinary Education and Development) and Dr. Ng Lip Tet (Visiting Fellow). Since time is limited, we then visit the laboratory in the Department of Biology and Chemistry (BCH). Dr. Y.W. Lam (Associate Professor, BCH) demonstrated their facility and research on Stem Cell.

HeathBaby Hong Kong Biotech Limited would have some research projects which collaboration with Dr. Y.W. Lam about stem cell soon.

After the visit, we had lunch with Prof. Way Kuo (President, CityU) in City Chinese Restaurant.

Since the animal vaccine related the basic research of biomedical, so we further discussed with Prof. Michael M. Yang (Head, Department of Biomedical Sciences; Chair Professor of Chemistry and Biomedical Sciences) and his team after the lunch.
