Prof. Pang’s (彭泓基教授) introduction course for I Ching named “I Ching and the Wisdom of Life” (易經與人生智慧) Lecture 2 was held on 1st Apr 2023. The course has four lectures. I would like to summarize some key points of Lecture 2 for sharing below.
Firstly,
Prof. Pang introduced the methodology to study I Ching and basic structure of I
Ching. He said western knowledge started from Aristotle and Plato and Chinese
knowledge started from I Ching’s explanation statement. He introduced the concept
of “Analogy thinking (易象思維)” that means simulation and
symbolic in which association thinking of many things.
Then he explained the first hexagram named “乾 (qián)”. It has four key words “元,亨,利,貞。” indicating “Start, achieve,
people benefit and fair”.
In “乾
(qián)”,
the nature rule of life cycle was demonstrated.
After
that Prof. Pang briefed the wide meaning of “乾 (qián)”
in different dimensions.
Then
he used Five Elements (五行) to explain 天干 (Heavenly
Stems) and 地支 (Earthly Branches).
And
then six yao (六⽘)
were explained in right position and wrong position related to yin (陰)
and yang (陽).
Finally,
Prof. Pang showed the generation diagram of Hexagram (六十四卦).
Lastly,
he also explained the different directions between Innate Gossip (先天八卦)
and Acquired Gossip (後天八卦).
At the end, Prof. Pang mentioned how to employ Gossip for
courtyard house (四合院).
