DIAMIDEX & BLC Webinar – Improve your Productivity with Legionella Pneumophila Rapid Method

 The Webinar entitled “Improve your Productivity with Legionella Pneumophila Rapid Method – A MICA Advance case study by BLC Macau” was organized by DIAMIDEX and BLC Macau on 28^th May 2025.

Ms. Veronica Ponnuthurai (Business Mager, Diamidex) was MC and Dr. Fanny Marie Passot (R&D Project Leader, Diamidex) was speaker. Mr. Leo Choi (District Manager, BLC Macau and Lab Manager, A&R Macau) was guest speaker to share case study using MICA Advance Legionella system.

Dr. Fanny Marie Passot was the first speaker and she firstly introduced Diamidex company background.

Then she shared their vision that making the invisible visible faster to make your world safer.

After that she mentioned MICA solution for different microorganism test with comparison between standard methods and Diamidex methods. They had shorter much testing time.

Dr. Fanny Passot introduced their breakthrough using Machine Learning to detect and identify microcolonies.

Finally, she compared MICA Legionella system with ISO 11731 workflow that reduced time to result from “7-14 days” to 2 days!

The overall comparison summary was showed. 

Mr. Leo Choi was the guest speaker and his topic named “How MICA Advance Legionella Improve Our Productivity”. 

In the beginning, Leo summarized his talk including purpose, process and payoff.

He comparison the cost efficiency from conventional method and MICA method in terms of steps, incubator space, sample handling limit, skill requested. MICA Advance Legionella demonstrated excellence performance.

After that he shared his daily workflow that one technician using MICA Advance Legionella to do 24 samples as well as E. Coli & HPC samples.

Finally, Leo concluded that they were able to handle 5 times more samples than original method and decreased the manpower need. 

At the end, Ms. Veronica Ponnuthurai wrapped up the webinar.

Lastly, Q&A session, Mr. Leo Choi answered some technical and practical questions.

Dinner with Leo Choi and Benny Wong in PolyU

 Benny Wong boss of A&R (Macau) Testing Limited (ART) was back to Hong Kong this week. Leo Choi and Benny Wong had dinner with Minda and I on 12^th Mar 2025 in PolyU. We took a photo in front of PolyU Library.

Since Leo and Minda arrived early, we visit PolyU Library.

We visited the top floor (6/F) of the University Library that one side was designed for discussion and the other side was silent area.

In 4/F, we visited the quiet area with sound level monitoring.

And then we visited the maker area for students to use 3D printing.

Finally, we had a happy dinner in Staff Western Restaurant “U.Green”.

ART Laboratory Visit and Macau Trip 2024

 A&R (Macau) Testing Limited (ART) had performed remote reassessment for accreditation on Nov 2024 and then they invited us to visit the laboratory on 7th Dec 2024. We took a group photo in front of the laboratory.

Minda and I went to the Macau on 6^th Dec 2024 afternoon. 

We stayed at the new hotel named “YOHO Treasure Island Hotel”.

At that night, we walked around and saw celebration of the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to China.

Many China flags and Macau regional flag!

On 7^th Dec morning, we saw a big Santa balloon outside the hotel.

When we arrived the laboratory, we took a group photo for memory.

Minda shared her experience of microbiology (MB) testing techniques to Crystal and Emme. 

Leo and I took a photo inside the MB laboratory.

After that we had lunch outside.

In afternoon, we reviewed the internal audit report and held management review meeting.

We discussed some improvement items after review the records.

Finally, the demonstration of the MICA legionella testing. 

Preparing the washing sample and then for instrument scanning. 

Leo showed the data capture by the instrument.

At the end, we had dinner in The Eight Restaurant.

One of the most famous delicacies is Supreme Suckling Pig filled with Fried Rice and Preserved Meat.

After the dinner, Minda and I went to The Ruins of St. Paul (大三巴牌坊).

Then we come back and took a photo outside the hotel.

On 8^th Dec morning, we had a lazy breakfast and then come back to Hong Kong. Hopefully, we will meet in Macau again for World Summit for Chinese Quality in next year.

ART Laboratory Zoom Meeting 2024

After a year, A&R (Macau) Testing Limited (ART) is time to reassess by IAS (Online reassessment in Dec 2024). Thus, Leo invited me to join their zoom meeting. Crystal and Emme also joined the meeting too. 

Horizontal Audit Checklist was reviewed together and I remind them to review the following items: Previous Internal Audit Report, Previous IAS NCs & follow up actions Intralab & Interlab report, Any change (organization structure, staff, test method) Staff training record, new method with MU and validation. Then they need to perform Horizontal Audit and Vertical Audit. Finally, to hold management review meeting.

Hopefully, we have time to meet in Macau for holiday.

Dinner with Leo Choi in PolyU 2024

Mr. Leo Choi visited Hong Kong for business meeting on 4^th Sep 2024. I invited him to have dinner with Minda in PolyU. We took a photo in front of PolyU entry for memory. 

Leo told us a good new about their laboratory got the tender for water testing and would start in early next year. Let’s celebrated it! Thus, Leo’s lab (named A&R (Macau) Testing Limited) could be promoted now!

During the 9^th World Summit for Chinese Quality, I introduced Dr. Lin Chang (林暢) (MQMA) to Leo for joining quality association family in Macau. The summit would be held in Macau next year. Let’s join together.

Dinner with Benny and Leo 2024

Mr. Benny Wong and Mr. Leo Choi visited Hong Kong for business meeting on 28^th Feb 2024. I invited them to have dinner in CityU Faculty Lounge. We arrived CityU entry and took a photo for memory.

After the last zoom meeting for BLC Lab project on 23^rd Nov 2023, their laboratory started operation. Hopefully every success for their lab in Macau. I introduced the lounge food and facility that could be held for company annual meeting and other events but limited to CityU senior staff for booking.

BLC Lab Last Zoom Meeting 2023

The last zoom meeting for BLC Lab project was held on 23^rd Nov 2023. The first zoom meeting was on 3^rd Apr 2023. More than half year implementation that it was completed the accreditation assessment by IAS. 

The last meeting had reviewed all CARs and area for improvements. I also suggested future actions based on people, instrument, material, method, environment and QA. Jenny had completed her project before left. I looked back over the entire project, three consultants left indicating that is tough project! My sword has not old yet.

Hopefully BLC Lab every success in their future development in Macau.

Visit to Macau and Laboratories

Minda and I visit Macau from 4^th to 6^th Nov 2023. This trip aims to share knowledge to friends’ laboratory and visit to Macau. We arrived Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge gate at night on 4^th Nov 2023.

After 4 hrs from Hong Kong University station to Macau hotel, we had dinner in Thailand style restaurant near hotel.

In the morning, we had breakfast in hotel.

After that we arrived A&R Laboratory and took a group photo for memory.

Minda shared her experience in microbiology testing and sample handling, etc.

We took a photo in the MB lab.

Lastly, we took a photo in front of the laboratory signboard.

After that we had lunch together.

In afternoon, Leo and I informally visited Macau Institute for Applied Research in Medicine and Health (MIAR) which is under Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) and located in University Hospital. 

Inside the institute, we understand their service scope in microbial limit test, as well as, food water analysis.

We visited their chemical and microbiology laboratories, MB waste room and instrument room. They had ICP instruments. Mr. CT Sou shared their laboratory knowledge to us.

At night, we had dinner together and tried the Portuguese style food.

We cheer together and to have happy hour.

This is a very unique restaurant.

On 6^th Nov, we visited hotel shop after breakfast. I found Michael Jackson sculpture and took a photo.

Angry bird playground for children in the 3/F of the hotel.

After that we went to Ruins of St. Paul's.

We had lunch in the traditional restaurant.

We tried shark fin with rice. Set meal for two only $298! 

There are many small streets and special shops in Macau.

Minda and I had a happy trip in these two days in Macau.
