ESG Seminar – How to Control the Bargaining Table

The Executive Study Group (ESG) seminar 2016 – Leadership Strategy series named How to Control the Bargaining Table to Build Your Influential Power was held by the ESG, Asia Pacific Institute for Strategy Limited (APIFS) and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corp (HKSTPC) on 30 Aug 2016.  I would like to summarize the seminar for sharing below. (The seminar is full!)


Dr. Mark Lee briefed the purpose of Executive Study Group (ESG) and he established 100 CEOs Peer Learning Group.  He told us the coming topics in the CEO Group included “Downturn Strategy”, “Design & Innovation Strategy”, “Re-Branding and Marketing”, “Alliance and Plug-and-Play Strategy” and “Organization Development Strategy”.  He then also quoted Steve Jobs statement that Creativity is just connecting things.

HKQAA & The People’s Government of Xinhui District Visit to HKSTP

We were honor that HKQAA arranged The People’s Government of Xinhui District, Jiangmen City (江門市新會區人民政府) to visit HKSTP Incubation Program and Laboratories on 29 Aug 2016. Ms. Fanny Li and Mr. Nic Chan (HKQAA) led this trip to HKSTP.  In the beginning, Mr. Antony Chan briefed the background of HKSTP and our Incubation Programme services.  They were impressed that our incubation soft part support and achievement.  


And then I led them to visit our Technology Support Centre (TSC). Firstly, I briefed the Wireless Communications Test Laboratory and Reliability Laboratory.  Secondly, we visited the Material Analysis Laboratory.  Finally, we went to Probe and Test Development Centre to see the operation through the window of cleanroom.  We took a photo in the laboratory together.

HKSQ Seminar on Future Manufacturing

The HKSQ seminar named “Future Manufacturing – Industry 4.0, Made in China 2025 and Internet+” co-organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and SEEM Dept., CityU on 27th Aug 2016.  Industry 4.0, Made in China 2025 and Internet+ are the trend of future manufacturing.  Dr. YC Chau was invited to share his view on those elements and update after HKIE seminar on Industry 4.0 held one year ago.  Before the seminar, I (HKSQ) took a photo with my old friend Ir. Dr. YC Chau and Dr. CF Luk.


Dr. KS Chin represented SEEM Dept., CityU to give welcome speech.  Dr. Chin encouraged industrial professionals could study for research degree like Dr. YC Chau.

HKSTP APAC Innovation Summit 2016 Series – Sensors

The APAC Innovation Summit series was a flagship innovation conference of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTPC) and the topic entitled “Sensors” was held on 25 August 2016.  APAC Innovation Summit (“AIS” in short and formerly known as InnoAsia) aimed to provide an exchange platform on the trend of specific technology sectors.  In the beginning, Dr. HL Yiu (Head of Electronic Cluster, HKSTP) gave a welcome speech and he pointed out that sensor played an important role in different field under smart city and robotic.  He hope todays keynotes would give some insight for all participants.


The first speaker was Prof. William C. Tang (University of California, Irvine) and his topic entitled “Micro-electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Technology and Applications”.  Firstly, he reviewed IEEE publication from 1995 to 2015.  He observed that the publication in Circuits decreased in percentage and Sensors increased as much as Circuits in 2015.  Then he briefed the MEMS advantages included Integration, Miniaturization and Batch Fabrication.   It included Anisotropic Wet Etching of Silicon, Surface Micromachining, Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE), TI Digital Light Processor and Accelerometer.

Three Hundred Engineers Gathering to support Ir. Dr. Lo Wai Kwok

I was honour to be invited to attend the Engineers Gathering for Ir. Dr. Lo Wai Kwok election kickoff meeting of 2016 Legislative Council Election Functional Consitituency (Engineering) on 20th August 2016.  I knew Dr. WK Lo through Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman, HKSQ) and my first impression was in TQM’s leaflet about their photo for achieving HKIA Quality and Productivity Awards.  I joined Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) since 1997.  I found that Ir. Dr. WK Lo was our founding member and the Chairman’s report (1992/1993) had congratulation statement “Congratulations to our past Committee member, Mr. W.K. Lo for his double achievements in last year - the Young Industrialist Award and the Outstanding Young Person of 1992.”  I took photo with Dr. Lo in the beginning of the gathering for memory.


I met many friends and took some of them for memory.

Open Forum – Innovators meets Entrepreneurs

The Open Forum named “From Digital Leadership to Re-Industrialization: Innovators meets Entrepreneurs” organized by Department of Computing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 20th August 2016.  The City University of Hong Kong Engineering Doctorate Society (CityU EngD Society) was one of supporting organization.  This open forum aimed to invite speakers from the government, industry and academic to discuss the trend, direction, experience and cases on how digital leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs contributed toward the processes of re-industrialization.  In the beginning, Dr. Walter Fung as forum coordinator introduced the forum arrangement and topics.

Cyberport Smart-Clinic Seminar on HKQAA Startups Registration Scheme

After our last visited Cyberport on 15 Jun 2016, HKQAA and Cyberport organized the Smart-Clinic Seminar named “How to Gain Business Partners’ Trust by using Management Tools”.  We would like to introduce the scheme named “HKQAA Hong Kong Registration - Start-ups”.  I was invited by HKQAA to give a talk together.  Before the seminar, Mr. Nic Chan (Account Manager, HKQAA), Mr. Nathan Liu (Smart-Space Community Manager, Cyberport) and I took a photo for memory.

HKSQ AGM 2016 and QFD Seminar

A seminar named “You cannot design tomorrow's products using yesterday's QFD” was organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) after the 27th HKSQ Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 12 Aug 2016.  I would like to share both HKSQ AGM 2016 and Seminar below.


Mr. Peter Fung (Chairman, HKSQ) held the meeting and briefed the Chairman report to all members.  Until now, HKSQ has 366 individual members, 4 student members and 13 corporate members (by invitation only).  Then Peter briefed HKSQ activities in 2015/2016 including study mission to Purzer Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Taipei, technical visit, international networking and student project competition in LSG Sky Chefs.

After that our Hon. Treasurer Mr. Karson Chui presented HKSQ financial status in the official report and unaudited report. 

Ms. Minda Chiang (Hon. Secretary) reported all participants tonight and AGM agenda.  The nominations of Office Bearers in 2016/2017 were shown below.

After that the AGM seminar guest speaker was Dr. Catherine Chan and his topic named “You cannot design tomorrow's products using yesterday's QFD”.  Firstly, she introduced the new QFD standard ISO 163555.


The 15th Annual Meeting of the Extenics (全國第15屆可拓學年會) – Day 2

The 15th Annual Meeting of the Extenics (全國第15屆可拓學年會) was organized by Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) (中國人工智能學會), undertook by CAAI Extenics Professional Committee (中國人工智能學會可拓學專業委員會) and Ningbo Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University (NITZU) (浙江大學寧波理工學院) form 10 to 12 Aug 2016.  The Day 2 of the meeting was on 12 Aug 2016. The morning session was parallel sessions.  One part was to continue the Level 2 examination and the other part was Extenics research reporting. 


Mr. Yin Hanfan (鄞漢藩) (General Secretary, SZIPS) also presented the Four Steps of Extensive Innovation.

The 15th Annual Meeting of the Extenics (全國第15屆可拓學年會) – Day 1

The 15th Annual Meeting of the Extenics (全國第15屆可拓學年會) was organized by Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) (中國人工智能學會), undertook by CAAI Extenics Professional Committee (中國人工智能學會可拓學專業委員會) and Ningbo Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University (NITZU) (浙江大學寧波理工學院) form 10 to 12 Aug 2016.  The opening of the meeting was on 11 Aug 2016 (Day 1).  Dr. Aaron Tong and I represented Hong Kong team to take a photo with Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文) for memory.

Pre-Extenics Annual Meeting (全國第15屆可拓學年會) – Extenics Level 1 Exam

The 15th Annual Meeting of the Extenics  (全國第15屆可拓學年會) was organized by Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) (中國人工智能學會), undertook by CAAI Extenics Professional Committee (中國人工智能學會可拓學專業委員會) and Ningbo Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University (NITZU) (浙江大學寧波理工學院) form 10 to 12 Aug 2016.  The previous day was the 1st Extenics Level 1 examination which aimed to align all fundamental knowledge of Extenics Innovation Method for participants who would become Extenics engineer or consultant in the future.  Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文), Prof. Yang Chunyan (楊春燕) and Prof. Xingsen Li (李興森) were the examiners for this certification.  I took a photo of the building.


We took a group photo for memory.  Four of research students were under Prof. Yang Chunyan instruction for their research thesis.

HKSTP Seminar on Laboratory Safety & Conveyance of Hazardous Materials

The seminar on “Laboratory Safety & Conveyance of Hazardous Materials in Science Park” was organized by SHE team in HKSTP on 3 & 4 Aug 2016.  Safety is of paramount importance to HKSTP. With over 80 laboratories now in operation by Science Park partner companies, managing risks is vital to safeguard our health and well-being – not only of the laboratory operators, but of the Park community as a whole.  This free seminar covered our aspirations towards laboratory safety; best practice in the conveyance of hazardous materials and case sharing of laboratory incidents.  In the beginning, Mr. Morris Chan introduced Health and Safety role in the park.


We were honor to invite Mr. Yip Sung Tat (University Safety Office, CUHK) as our guest speaker and shared the Safety Guideline – On-site Conveyance of Hazardous Materials in the Hong Kong Science Park.
