CityU SEEM Guest Lecture 2021 – Learning Organization

 Dr. YC Chau was guest speaker for teaching SEEM Programme named “Professional Engineering Practice” in Semester B, 2020/2021 in CityU. Because of Covid-19 Pandemic, we still perform online teaching.  Dr. YC Chau shared his engineering lifelong learning and “Learning Organization” on 27^th Feb 2021. CDM team supported his lecture and joined for our coming industry 4.0 project.

In the beginning, Dr. KS Chin introduced Dr. YC Chau to student that we both are adjunct professors in SEEM, CityU.

Dr. YC Chau introduced his career in three stages and so called “3P” that stands for Profession, Professionalism and Professional.  He explained that you studied the subject for developing your profession knowledge and skill.  Then you have learnt from your career and lifelong learning with right attitude for Professionalism.  Finally, we would become a Professional.  The second topic was “Learning Organization”.

Then he introduced his PhD project during CityU to develop Project Action Learning (PAL) model and implemented into TDK (China) for ~20 years.

His approach was from individual learning to team learning and then to organizational learning for long term organization improvement.  He shared speed of Learning (L) must be greater than the rate of Change (C) (i.e. L>C).

Minitab Webinar - Maximise Efficiency Time-to-Market and Design for Reliability

The Webinar named “Maximise Efficiency Time-to-Market and Design for Reliability at the Speed of Light in Signify: Case Study” was organized by Minitab on 16^th Dec 2020.  In the beginning, Ms. Abbie Wong (Area Marketing Manager, Minitab) introduced two guest speaker and they were Prof. Willem Dirk van Driel (Fellow Scientist, Signify; Professor Delft University of Technology) and Mr. Piet Watte (Lead Development Engineer, Signify).

Firstly, the three major shift in the Lighting Industry was introduced and they were: 1) Industry Transformation, 2) A Changing World and 3) Digitalization.  They the Signify Company strategies were briefed.

Then they said reliability was the major concern of high-tech industries including Lighting (e.g. Long lifetime coverage, system reliability, multi-physic interaction and data analytics).  Design for Reliability (DfR) was mentioned that they had built on 4 pillars included Methodology, Testing, Reliability Tools, Capability assessment & training.

After that the failure of LED was stated and lumen depreciation model was demonstrated step by step using Minitab. 

A lumen depreciation model was developed by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) that model used experimental assessments of lumen depreciation of solid-state light sources.  Typically, a 6000hr test (could be 10,000hr) showed lumen depreciation and chromaticity shift over the period at particular operating temperatures 55^oC, 85^oC and 105^oC were discussed.

The workflow of setting up a depreciation model was demonstrated step by step.

The core model for lumen depreciation was showed and then made the regression life model.

Finally, the contour plot of Life Model was created by Minitab.

Lastly, they said reliability (and quality) is an asset and Richard Feynman statement was quoted as conclusion that “There is nothing that living things do that cannot be understood from the point of view that they are made of atoms acting according to the laws of physics.”

CityU Industrial Experts' Talks for SEEM Students

 I was honor to be invited by Prof. Min XIE (Chair Professor of Industrial Engineering, SEEM, CityU) to give industrial expert’s talk for the students in the course named SEEM3053 – Quality Improvement Methodologies under SEEM Department, CityU on 9th Nov 2020.  Since coronavirus outbreak had not dismissed, we had still performed online zoom teaching.  Before starting the talk, I took a photo with Prof. Xie for member.

In the beginning, Prof. Xie introduced my background to students.

Then I started my talk entitled “Total Quality Management and Quality Tools Application”. I introduced the whole quality development of different laboratories and centres as well as whole Science Park since 2003.  And then I briefed different quality tools application under different quality management systems (including ISO 9001, ISO 17025, ISO/TS 16949, ISO 27001, etc.)

Finally, I briefed how to measure customer satisfaction that I employed Kano model to survey our customers and incubatees.

Online Teaching Experience Sharing in CityU

In view of the latest development of the Novel Coronavirus outbreak, the University has announced moving classroom instruction to online learning from February 7, 2020 until further notice.  Therefore, we need to prepare Online Teaching Activities within short period of time.  I attended the training Sessions for teaching online on 5 Feb 2020.  I learned how to use Zoom in Canvas under university teaching system.

My first online teaching was held on 8 Feb 2020 (Saturday morning) named “Professional Engineering Practice”.  It is first time zero student in the hall and I performed my teaching online. 

The class 2 of Professional Engineering Practice related to National Policy on Industry Development such as Belt and Road Initiative.  I briefed most OBOR countries that I attended the conference there.  The picture is captured for ANQ Congress in Vladivostok, Russia.

After that I use polling and found that most student would like to visit Vladivostok.

Then I asked which countries they would like to work and live. Slovenia & Croatia was number one (39%), both Vladivostok, Russia and Saudi Arabia were number two (29%).  

Then I introduced the Great Bay Area (GBA).

I also asked them to select which area they would like to work and live (except HK).  Most of student selected Macau (59%), Shenzhen (32%) and Guangzhou (24%).

Today, I taught the course named “Quality Systems and Management – Organization-wide Quality Management System & ISO 9001” in class room.

I set some polling to attract student attention and discussion through chat box.

After each lecture, I set a quiz which contained MC and short questions for refreshing their learning from the lecture.

Overall, online teaching could have interaction with students and had a good response in case that teacher should have more preparation that direct face-to-face lecture.  However, it was found difficult for laboratory workshop online because it needs to practice through on hands experiment.

SGS ISO/IEC 17025 LMS Internal Auditor Training in Ecospace Limited

I was honor to be invited by SGS to train the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Laboratory Management System (LMS) Internal Auditor Training Course in Ecospace Limited from 11 & 14 Oct 2019. Since SGS is HKSQ corporate member, we had cooperated for long time in other events.   I took a photo in front of the building of Chemical Waste Treatment Facilities owned by EPD.

I also took a photo in the Ecospace Limited brand for memory.

The whole plant model is showed in the entry. They treated chemical waste, mercury waste and clinical waste, etc.  

We took a group photo during the training course. I had briefed the new and major changes of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and HOKLAS requirements, as well as, audit characteristic and competence.

There are many case studies and exercises.  They need to present their audit plan, audit scope & objective, audit findings, CAR and audit report to demonstrate their learning achievement.

SGS ISO/IEC 17025 LMS Internal Auditor Training Course

I was honor to be invited by SGS Mr. Steven Tse (Business Development Manager, SGS Academy) to train the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Laboratory Management System (LMS) Internal Auditor Training Course from 8^th to 9^th Aug 2019. Since SGS is HKSQ corporate member, we had cooperated for long time in other events.  

I also met my old colleague Mr. Ted Wong and we took a photo for memory.

During the training course, I briefed the new and major changes of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and HOKLAS requirements, as well as, audit characteristic and competence.

There are many case studies and exercises.  

One of them is used cards to construct audit process.

After during simulation audit case, they need to present their audit plan, audit scope & objective, audit findings, CAR and audit report to demonstrate their learning achievement.

Some of their feedback are my extra information for new and major changes summary that was useful for their transition audit and focused on HOKLAS requirements.

HKPC Industry 4.0 Implementation Workshop – Strategic Focus and Steps

Industry 4.0 Implementation Workshop Series was organized by Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) on 18^th Mar, 1^st & 12^th Apr 2019.  Mr. Patrick Kabasci (Technology Management, Fraunhofer IPT, KEX Knowledge Exchange AG) was our trainer.  Three workshops included “Industry 4.0 market and technological trends analysis, practical tools and technology”, “Industry 4.0 technical contents of pilot project” and “Industry 4.0 technical contents of pilot project” and “Industry 4.0 implementation strategic focus and steps”.  I missed the first workshop and would attend the second and third one.  I summarized the last workshop for sharing. In the beginning, Mr. Luker Tsoi (Consultant, Industry 4.0, HKPC) introduced FITMI and they approved SME Development Fund for Industry 4.0 for SMEs in Hong Kong.

Mr. Patrick Kabasci (Technology Management, Fraunhofer IPT, KEX Knowledge Exchange AG) was today’s trainer and his topic was Industry 4.0 Strategy.

Firstly, he briefed the framework of the digit transformation that included 1) Vision & Strategy,  2) Culture & Leadership, 3) Organizational Structure, 4) Governance & Control, 5) Capabilities, and 6) Partnership & External Stakeholders.

Mr. Patrick Kabasci (Technology Management, Fraunhofer IPT, KEX Knowledge Exchange AG) was today’s trainer.

In the beginning, he mentioned the content from trends to solution.  The first workshop stated Trends and Problem Space (Jobs-to-be-done).  Today workshop was identified i4.0 Solution Space and Smart Application.

Then he briefed the problem about inadequate data and latency periods that would slow down the implementation  

Mr. Kabasci described the Capability Evaluation based on Maturity Assessment.  This maturity level from 1 to 6 was employed in Germany.
