CityU Industrial Experts' Talks for MSEM Students

I and Dr. YC Chau were honor to be invited by Dr. KS Chin (Asso. Professor, SEEM, CityU) to give industrial expert’s talk for the students in the course named SEEM6037 – Managing Strategic Quality under Master of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) on 4^th Nov 2019. In the beginning, Dr. KS Chin gave an introduction of this lecture named “Quality and Innovation – Partner or Substitute? QMS vs Innovation?” He said many people though “Today is Quality but Tomorrow is Innovation”. Then he briefed different types of innovation including technical, application, radical, open, etc.

Then he mentioned the Success in business needed to match “Technology Push” and “Market Pull”. Similarly, Success in business also needed to match “Innovation” and “Quality”. Dr. Chin said partnering relationship existed between quality and innovation. Both involved continuous improvement process but the rate of change was different. Quality improved the things incrementally and Innovation improved the things rapidly (like Breakthrough).

Lastly, Dr. Chin briefed two cases on innovation research that one was his previous student named “Organization Innovation Management Model in HK/China” and the second case was my student named “Integration of Quality and Innovation Management System for HKSTP”. At the end, Dr. Chin introduced Dr. YC Chau and I on this guest talk.

Dr. YC Chau (Adjunct Professor, SEEM, CityU) was the first speaker and his topic named “Digitalizing Operations and Quality Management”. Beginning, Dr. Chau asked students using mobile for online survey about quality role in digital era (Always/Sometimes/Never) and then he brought the concept that physical device and cyber world linked was the first step to digitalization.

Then he used some videos to explain Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), MTR Control Centre, Medical Robot, etc. He also briefed the evolution from structured productivity to structured quality and then to structured innovation.

After that he stated Industry 4.0 and its 3P Trend stand for Passive to Proactive and then to Predictive. Predictive QA related to Data to Data communication and analysis. Finally, Dr. YC Chau said “Synchronization in physical flow and information flow was critical in digital era.”

I (Adjunct Professor, SEEM, CityU) was the second speaker and my topic entitled “Innovation Management – Trend, Tools & Standard and QMS based Organization Innovation with Extension Innovation Methodology Approach”. In the beginning, I introduced Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) history, membership and certifications to students for their future quality professional development.

Quality Innovation definition and meaning was also described. Then I briefed the history of quality and innovation evolution. For quality, it developed from QC, SPC, Deming/Crosby/Juran, TQM, Lean and Six Sigma. For innovation, it developed from Trial & Error, Brainstorming, Creatology, Six Thinking Hats, Thinkertoys, Design Thinking, TRIZ, USIT and Extenics.

I mentioned Prof. Cai Wen’s original developed innovation theory named “Extenics” which included Extension Theory, Extension Method and Extension Engineer. Prof. Cai Wen selected this topic since 1976 and then used 7 years to develop the basic-element and Extenics Set in which created a new China original science subject. I briefed the Basic-element and Extension Innovation Method (four steps).

After that I briefed the concept of integrated QMS (ISO 9001) and Innovation Management System (CEN/TS 16555-1 and ISO 56002) for organization innovation.

Lastly, I mentioned two examples to employ Extension Innovation Method for organization innovation that one was new business model for startup as service innovation and the other was combined with six sigma (DMA-METS-IC) to solve drug packaging automation problem as process innovation.
