Meeting HKSTP old colleague- Mr. Peter Mok in CityU

I was happy to meet Mr. Peter Mok (Former Head, Incubation Programmes, HKSTP) in the CityU innovation tunnel this afternoon. I guess he might be attending a HK Tech 300 meeting.


Now, Mr. Peter Mok is general manager served in Shenzhen Qianhai Ehub Operation Co., Ltd. Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Youth Innovation and Entrepreneur Hub (Ehub) was jointly initiated by the Qianhai Authority, the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, and the Shenzhen Youth Federation, and is operated by Shenzhen Qianhai Ehub Operation Co., Ltd. It serves as a stepping stone for young people from Hong Kong and Macao, aiming to become their "first stop" for mainland development. It provides a stage, expands opportunities, creates conditions, and offers prospects for numerous young people from Hong Kong and Macao to showcase their talents in Qianhai.


Then I went to SYE Dept to get my new name card.


I had written an article to HKIE stated Hong Kong startup ecosystem from university to accelerator in 2021.

COMP guest talk for KETO Entrepreneurship Support

I was honor to invite Mr. Ryan Law (Manager, Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurship Office) giving a talk named “PolyU KETO Entrepreneurship Support” to my student in COMP 3511 & COMP 3512 under BSc in Computer Science on 27th & 28th Mar 2025. 


“COMP 3512 – Legal Aspects, Professionalism and Ethics of Computing” is HKIE accredited course for Programmes in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE); and “COMP3511 – Legal Aspects and Ethics of Computing” is HKIE accredited course for Programmes in Computing (COMP).


Firstly, Mr. Law briefed the PolyU Entrepreneurship background and snapshot. Some of these unicorns were founded by our students (e.g. EIE, ME, etc.).


After that he introduced the PolyU Entrepreneurship Development Framework from Ideation Fund to Micro Fund to PolyUxHKSTP to Angel Fund and then to Entrepreneurship Investment Fund (EIF), lastly to RAISE+ which is matching fund per project.


Lastly, Mr. Ryan Law invited all students to join the Future Challenge competition.

PolyU ISE Lecture for Experience Sharing 2023

Dr. YC Chau and I had supported the course named “ISE 549 - Management of Innovation and Technology” under the MSc in Knowledge and Technology Management in PolyU this year again. The last lecture was experience sharing. Dr. YC Chau invited Dr. Vincent Fung and Mr. Raphael Pirker to share their working and startup experience to students. We had dinner in the PolyU staff canteen before the lecture. 


Ms. Misbah Iqbal is PhD student and we appreciated for her assistance on the whole program IT setting and student group forming, etc.


Firstly, Dr. YC Chau shared his 40 years working experience.


His career 3P model from Profession to Professionalism and then to be Professional were introduced. 


Finally, he concluded his past, present and future strategy for student reference.


I was the second speaker and shared my experience in four dimension including academia, business, community and government. I quoted Steve Jobs about “Connect the dots” and showed my case.


I also introduced my work in science park laboratories.


After that our guest Mr. Raphael Pirker (Founder & CEO of TBS) shared his entrepreneurship. He started business when he was 18 years old with HK$5000.


Then he shared his company milestones from 2013 to present. Mr. Pirker introduced innovation in manufacturing in three points below

l   Innovative products vs innovative manufacturing techniques

l   Design for manufacturing

l   Unlocking vertical integration through innovation.

Where vertical integration advantages were speed, flexibility and knowledge. Because contract manufacturers would sacrifice either on quality, speed or price.


After that he compared manufacturing in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Only rent and labor cost were disadvantage. “The right scale and automation mix unlocked logistics, tax & customers efficiencies unavailable anywhere else in the world.” he said.


Finally, Mr. Raphael Pirker shared some ideas in four dimensions and they were ‘ROI’, ‘HR’, ‘Integrate gradually’ and ‘Improve constantly’.


The last guest speaker was Dr. Vincent Fung (Consultant, Advance Manufacturing (Innofacturing) at HKSTP) who shared his working experience and introduced Advance Manufacturing (Innofacturing) at HKSTP to students.


Firstly, Dr. Fung briefed six dimensions in innovation and technology (I&T) including Collaboration, Co-creation, Ideation, Implementation, Value Creation and Commercialization. He briefed I&T in manufacturing industry including innovation in product, manufacturing, corporate, business model and service.


Then he introduced I&T led into smart manufacturing.


After that he shared success factors and failure factors to startups entrepreneur. Some failure factors are High complexity of I&T, legal requirement, Not at right time / right market, over expansion of project team or too small of project team, lack of technical support, no good marketing plan, etc.


He also identified 4 success factors and they were team formation, ideas/technologies used in the product, partner and business model.



Lastly, Dr. Vincent Fung introduced the proposed facilities and service in ProShop in AMC at HKSTP.

CDM Team Dinner and Meet BCH cohorts

CDM Team had dinner for Ms. Alice Leung back to Hong Kong from USA. YC and I invited them to have dinner in CityU Faculty Lounge (VIP only restaurant).

After the dinner, I met Dr. Lawrence Tzang (Co-Founder & Chief Scientific Officer, Prenetics) and his wife. They are both the 2nd class of BCH graduates and Mr. Wong Ming Wah (stand near me) is the 1st class of BCH graduate (1992-1995).

PolyU Startup’s Guide: Navigating Contractual Matters

The webinar named “PolyU Startup’s Guide: Navigating Contractual Matters” organized by KTEO, PolyU on 13th Apr 2023. Ms. Sandy Chui (Attorney at-Law, Guanghe Law Firm) was the guest speaker. Her topics mainly covered General Principle of Contract, MOU & NDA, Contract for Startup, Liabilities for Breach and Disputes Resolution. 


Firstly, Ms. Sandy Chui introduced general principle of contract including equal & fair, voluntary, in good faith and legally binding. Eventhough contract is not necessary by writing, it had better in written form.


Then Ms. Chui said contract had three stages and they are offer, acceptance and consideration. The common clauses of contract or agreement were discussed.


And then she briefed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Non-disclosure agreement (NDA) that MOU is not legally binding but NDA is legally binding contract. 


After that contracts for startups are discussed especially on shareholders’ agreement. In order to protect the company, shareholders ownership, transfer arrangement and dissolution should be designed in the early stage. The copyright in a work was concerned. For works created by an employee within his normal duties of employment, the copyright in the work belongs to the employer, unless there is an agreement to the contrary. 


Finally, Ms. Chui briefed the liabilities for breach and explained the entrusted shareholding agreement.


Lastly, she stated the disputes resolution including Litigation (The judge or the jury is responsible for weighing the evidence and making a ruling), Arbitration (A neutral third party serves as a judge without appeal) and Mediation (A neutral third party to help disputants come to a consensus on their own).


During Q&A, I asked if IP using staff name and ownership still become to the company. Ms. Sandy Chui said it should be based on the contract design. Another question was about staff contract with Code of Conduct but not necessary involved NDA after left the company.

CDM Team Lunch and Meet CityU Friends

CDM Team had lunch for Prof. Bieng Chuah back to Hong Kong from UK. Prof. Chuah shared his tour in Malaysia and England during Covid period. Then we discussed with Roy about application of RPA and Extenics.

Then I met Dr. Victor Lau in his KTO office. Today is his last day in CityU and then changed to CUHK.


Finally, I went to Dr. KS Chin office and met Prof. Antonio Lau (School of Management, Kyung Hee University) who had been HKSQ exco member and then went to Korea and teaching for ten years.

PolyU Online Workshop - Taxation in Mainland China and HK

The online workshop named “Taxation in Mainland China and HK” organized by KTEO, PolyU on 30th Mar 2023. Mr. Maurice Saeung (Head of Compliance of a Hong Kong listed company) was the guest speaker and he discussed the ins and outs of taxation in Mainland China and Hong Kong. The workshop aimed to introduce tax-efficient corporate structures for HK/China cross-border business, tax incentives and practical issues, as well as tax issues related to stock awards and share options. 


Firstly, Mr. Maurice Saeung briefed the important of taxation to entrepreneur including tax expense reduction, reducing tax liability, avoiding incorrect tax filing and corporate image. Then he introduced some features of tax system in Hong Kong.


And then he raised an example that HK resident owned design studio providing product design services. The company income is design service fee and expenditures are salaries and software license fee to US. He compared the tax burden between Hong Kong and Shenzhen that HK is higher return on capital.


The second case is related to offshore profit that is not taxable in Hong Kong but China corporate income tax is imposed on worldwide profit. And the third case is business expansion and the additional funding from owner lending or HK angel investor.


The fourth case is owner received an offer from investor for purchase of 30% shareholding and purchase price at 20x PE. 


The last case is owner considering a share option scheme to incentivize his senior staff. The tax implications to employer and employee were discussed.


Finally, Mr. Maurice Saeung discussed the corporate structure for HK and China business in both service and production.


Lastly, he briefed the foreign source income exemption (FSIE) regime that effective from 1 Jan 2023, certain foreign source income if received in HK are deemed to be taxable income subject to profits tax, unless the conditions for tax exemption apply.

Polyventures x HKAI Lab Webinar - AI Entrepreneurship and Career Opportunity

 The Polyventures x HKAI Lab Webinar named “AI Entrepreneurship and Career Opportunity” organized by Google Developer Student Clubs @ PolyU (GDSC) on 28th Mar 2023. The first speaker was Mr. Jovian Ling (Co-founder of Set Sail Venture Ltd) for the session of Start-up Sharing: Set Sail Venture Ltd.


Firstly, Mr. Jovian Ling explained what is entrepreneurship and the different between your plan before startup and the reality of difficulty.


Then he shared his life up and down through 3 pivots and now assisted by HKAI Lab to grow his business.


After that he introduced his service in chatalog that employed ChatGPT.


Finally, he summarized seven functions using ChatGPT through digital assistant.


During Q&A, Mr. Ling shared the CRISPE Framework and discussed Meta-prompting idea.


Mr. Timothy Leung (Executive Director of HKAI Lab) was the second speaker and his topic was “Introduction of HKAI Lab Accelerator Programme”. He said AI/ChatGPT is the future. 


In the beginning, Mr. Timothy Leung briefed the industries AI, Functions AI and Roles of Al are servicing. 


Then he briefed the coverage of HKAI Lab’s incubates in different industries.


And then the impact of AI was discussed and some career opportunities of their startup including App Developer, AI Engineer, Data Engineer, Frontend Developer, Marketing Officer, AI Specialist, UI Designer, etc.


After that he quoted Mr. Kai-Fu Lee’s 4 Waves of AI from Internet AI to Business AI to Perception AI and then to Autonomous AI to discuss their servicing.


At the end, Mr. Timothy Leung introduced HKAI Lab and their coming accelerator program (application deadline on 19th Apr 2023).
