CityU ADSE Lecture in Mid-Autumn Festival

I had teaching a new program named “Bachelor of Engineering in Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering (BEng ITME) 工學士 (智能製造工程學)” in Semester A, 2021/2022.  My lectures in the BEng ITME Programme named “ADSE(SEEM)2066: Professional Engineering Practice” for year 1 students. Because of Covid-19 Pandemic, we still performed online and offline teaching mode together.  Since today is Mid-Autumn Festival, we would celebrate it with family after the lecture.

I will teach four lectures as below.

–     Lec 4 Introduction of Advanced Technology and Artificial Intelligence

–     Lec 6 Extension Innovation Approach and Methodology

–     Lec 7 Entrepreneurship and Start-up Ecosystem

–     Lec 9 Sustainable Development of Engineering in Society – QEHS

Today is Lecture 4 and I introduced Advanced Technology that ABCDEF stands for AI, Big Data / Blockchain, Cloud Computing, Data Technology, Edge Computing and Fintech.

After survey with students, we found that most students are interested in AI Tech in Robotic / Intelligent Robot as well as Machine Learning & Deep Learning.

Finally, I summarized all survey for relevance against impact to students’ future career. Most students think that 5G, Cloud & InfoSec, Big Data and AI, AIoT are high relevance and high impact to their future career.

HKSQ Webinar - Leveraging Industry 4.0 for enhancing overall productivity and quality performance

The HKSQ Webinar named “Leveraging Industry 4.0 for enhancing overall productivity and quality performance” was held on 16^th April 2021. The seminar aimed to share remanufacturing new production for shipment replacement and to recover customer satisfaction through the deployment of Industry 4.0 into product qualification and life testing cycle.  HKSQ and SEEM team members supported the seminar.

Before the seminar, Dr. KS Chin (Associate Professor, SEEM, CityU) gave welcome speech and briefed the aim of webinar.

Then I introduced guest speaker Dr. Vincent Fung who has over 40 years’ hand-on work experience in the manufacturing industry and solid background in different production environment from hand crafting workshop to industry 4.0 of smart manufacturing.

In the beginning, Dr. Vincent Fung (Executive Director, Kin Yat Holdings Ltd) compared between traditional manufacturing and smart manufacturing. Industry 4.0 promoted Digital Automation, Data Visualization, Intelligent Manufacturing and Smart Quality Control.

Then Dr. Fung briefed 5 fundamental causes of product rejects (5M) and they were Manpower (People), Machines, Materials, Methods and Management.  The key cause is improper management in all factors. 

After that he mentioned “Quality at Design” and its six success factors that is six steps QA testing showed in the following diagram.

Smart Quality is in an intelligent or automated manufacturing industry, the business management system is generally composed of four integrated management systems included Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Manufacture Execution System (MES) and Measurement & Quality System (Smart Quality).  In Smart Quality, it included Quality Information System (QIS) and Integrated close loop Smart Quality System.

Finally, Dr. Fung shared the data integration in Smart Factory employed Shop Floor Information System (SFIS) that all information collected and integrated together. And also shared three cases such as “Jenga”, “Roomba” and “iRobot” to explain how to leverage Industry 4.0 for enhancing overall productivity and quality performance.  He got a great success in those cases.

Lastly, Dr. Vincent Fung concluded that implemented smart manufacturing and smart quality system achieved more than 70% production efficiency improvement and 94.4% reduction of defect rate.

CityU SEEM Guest Lecture 2021 – Learning Organization

 Dr. YC Chau was guest speaker for teaching SEEM Programme named “Professional Engineering Practice” in Semester B, 2020/2021 in CityU. Because of Covid-19 Pandemic, we still perform online teaching.  Dr. YC Chau shared his engineering lifelong learning and “Learning Organization” on 27^th Feb 2021. CDM team supported his lecture and joined for our coming industry 4.0 project.

In the beginning, Dr. KS Chin introduced Dr. YC Chau to student that we both are adjunct professors in SEEM, CityU.

Dr. YC Chau introduced his career in three stages and so called “3P” that stands for Profession, Professionalism and Professional.  He explained that you studied the subject for developing your profession knowledge and skill.  Then you have learnt from your career and lifelong learning with right attitude for Professionalism.  Finally, we would become a Professional.  The second topic was “Learning Organization”.

Then he introduced his PhD project during CityU to develop Project Action Learning (PAL) model and implemented into TDK (China) for ~20 years.

His approach was from individual learning to team learning and then to organizational learning for long term organization improvement.  He shared speed of Learning (L) must be greater than the rate of Change (C) (i.e. L>C). 

At the end, CDM team took a group photo for memory.

Online Teaching Experience Sharing in CityU 2021

I was honor to be guest speaker for teaching SEEM Programme named “Professional Engineering Practice” in Semester B, 2020/2021 in CityU again. Since Covid-19 Pandemic is still not under controlled, we need to prepare Online Teaching Activities within this period in 2021.  My first online teaching was held on 23 Jan 2021 (Saturday morning) and my class discussed Professional Engineer in Sustainability.

Dr. CY Chau and I had breakfast in CityU student canteen before the class.

In the beginning, Dr. KS Chin introduced us to student that we both are adjunct professors in SEEM, CityU.

We observed an improvement for facility that using dual monitors for online teaching. So that we can manage the presentation and students enquiry through chat room easily.

My class started.

No student was found in classroom eventhough CityU allow a portion of students who would like to attend the class or online at home.

Our interaction depends on chat and polls.  I taught Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for UN 2030 Agenda and asked students to poll on each goal during the class.

After the class, I summarized students’ result of the SDG’s relevance and impact on students’ future career.

CityU EngD Society Meeting with Dean of College of Engineering

 We are honor to have meeting with Prof. Kuo Tei Wei (Dean, College of Engineering; Chair Professor of Information Engineering, CityU), Prof. Chuangyin Dang (Acting Head & Professor, SEEM Dept., CityU) and Prof. Min Xie (Chair Professor of Industrial Engineering, SEEM Dept., CityU) to discuss the future of EngD (EM) program and how EngD Society could contribute to College of Engineering on 3^rd Dec 2020.  We took a photo in front of College office.

We also expressed EngD (EM) cohorts’ opinions to continue the EngD(EM) Program and reposition to the higher level hierarchy of CityU as well as provided more contribution by EngD Society.

Then Dr. Herbert introduced the EngD (EM) Program and EngD Society Background to Prof. Kuo.

One of significant activities of the EngD (EM) Program is residential workshop that we could visit different great corporate and closer discussion among different cohorts.

After that we discussed the following items:

i)          EngD (EM) is important program and different departments under College of Engineering could support it (College-based program).  Incentive scheme for different professors under different should be considered so as to enhance the programme supervision.  One of suggestions is employed EngD cohorts to assist for supervising the thesis.

ii)         EngD Society could help college for enhancing the following items including Entrepreneurship / Startup, Internship, Guest talk and Forum, as well as, Mentoring.  So as to create Academic and Industrial ecosystem.

iii)       Cooperation between industry and academic that we needed to work out a right model.  Dean suggested to separate into Innovation Part and Implementation Part. PhD or research students would focus to Innovation Part (R&D) and it needed industry input for Implementation Part.  Thus, university research result have impact to society.  Funding issue such as ITF or industry sponsorship could be considered for different projects initiation.

iv)    EngD Society supported the new program named Bachelor of Engineering in Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering (BENG ITME) which matched the reindustrialization policy in Hong Kong and industry 4.0 trend in the world. Intelligent manufacturing laboratory would be built for this purpose. EngD Society is willing to provide supporting letter for that programme.

At the end, EngD Society would like to contribute more back to CityU and connected all cohorts to share their experience and expertise.

CityU Industrial Experts' Talks for SEEM Students

 I was honor to be invited by Prof. Min XIE (Chair Professor of Industrial Engineering, SEEM, CityU) to give industrial expert’s talk for the students in the course named SEEM3053 – Quality Improvement Methodologies under SEEM Department, CityU on 9th Nov 2020.  Since coronavirus outbreak had not dismissed, we had still performed online zoom teaching.  Before starting the talk, I took a photo with Prof. Xie for member.

In the beginning, Prof. Xie introduced my background to students.

Then I started my talk entitled “Total Quality Management and Quality Tools Application”. I introduced the whole quality development of different laboratories and centres as well as whole Science Park since 2003.  And then I briefed different quality tools application under different quality management systems (including ISO 9001, ISO 17025, ISO/TS 16949, ISO 27001, etc.)

Finally, I briefed how to measure customer satisfaction that I employed Kano model to survey our customers and incubatees.

CityU Alumni Story for promoting Extenics & New Extenics Channel in YouTube

My story named “Quality Management Scholar promoting Extenics (推廣可拓學的品質管理學者)” had published in Hong Kong Economic Times on 13 Feb 2020.  The interview was arranged by ARO in CityU on 8 Jan 2020.

Firstly, I took a photo in front of Physics Department.

Then I found my EngD Supervisor Dr. KS Chin to take a photo in SEEM Department.  I hold my new book named “Extenics: Logic of Innovation” and Dr. Chin hold the book named “The Road to Management for High Quality-40 years of Total Quality Management in China (1979-2019): Part I, Chapter 3: Hong Kong's Way to Total Quality Management”.

After that I found Prof. Michael Lam to take a photo in laboratory of Chemistry Department.  We had cooperated with HKSQ to establish course named “Quality Management for Laboratory” since 2005.

In order to further promote “Extenics”, I established a YouTube Channel named “Extenics Channel” and planned to upload both Chinese and English video that at least once per week.
