HKIE Webinar - 5G Era - Hong Kong and Worldwide Confirmation

The HKIE webinar named “5G Era - Hong Kong and Worldwide Confirmation” was co-organized by Control, Automation & Instrumentation Division (CAD) and held on 3rd Nov 2020.  Comparing with 4G, 5G network support 10-time more transmission capacity, enabling up to 1 million devices to be connected to the internet at the same time.  This webinar introduced the latest concept of 5G technology and the major keys toward 5G Era.  The guest speaker was Mr. Gordon Guo (Deputy Head of Internet & Enterprise Solution Division in China Mobile Hong Kong)

In the beginning, Mr. Gordon Guo introduced the revolutions from 1G to 5G.  He said 3G was internet of information and 4G went to industrial internet, and then 5G entered internet of value (5G+AI, Big Data and Blockchain).

Then he said China was behind in 3G and 4G, but now we were at the same starting point for 5G.  It had predicted the 5G industry would drive direct and indirect economic output of 6.3 trillion CNY and 10.6 trillion CNY in 2030, respectively.

And then he introduced China’s “New Infrastructure” that included 5G infrastructure, ultra-high-voltage power facilities, inter-city transport, vehicle charging stations, big data centers, AI and industrial internet.

After that Mr. Guo reviewed the AI development four cornerstones.  Apart from algorithms, three cornerstones that computing power, scenarios and data were supported by 5G.

Moreover, he introduced the 5G Spectrum Resources under CMHK that included 3.3GHz, 3.5GHz, 4.9GHz and 28GHz.  Those information could be found in OFCA.  Since there were two restriction zones for 3.5GHz in Hong Kong, Mr. Guo said 4.9GHz could cover it.

After that Mr. Guo introduced a new business model named “Slicing Network As A Service” that could be separated as location-based, time-based and service-based slicing.  There were 5 slicing level from L0 to L4 with different definition under 5G network.

The difference between 5G and Wifi were discussed including Range, Speed, Latency, Technology, Modulation, Frequency and Use cases, etc.

Finally, he briefed the 5G enabled new technologies and reshaped the new application using 5G mobile communication technology in different industries.

Lastly, Mr. Gordon Guo mentioned different opportunities in Hong Kong through “5G + x” such as smart logistics, tourism, hotel, medical, industrial park and finance, etc.

CES Seminar – When Trump loves in 5G and 6G

CityU Eminence Society (CES) University Collaborative Project Work Group organized a seminar named “When Trump loves in 5G and 6G” and then visit the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves.  Before the seminar, CES work group members took a photo with Dr. Wong Hang for memory.

In the beginning, Mr. Week Wong (Chairman of CityU Eminence Society) gave welcome speech and he also introduced CityU Eminence Society (CES) to all participants.

Dr. Wong Hang (Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, CityU) was our guest speaker and he shared knowledge and development trend of 5G, as well as, 6G idea.  His talk focused on Investment, Technology and Leading Country.

Firstly, Dr. Wong briefed the history of telecommunication from 1G to 5G.  1G used AM signal, 2G changed to digital and then 3G would use internet, until 4G could use mobile for World Wide Web.

Then he introduced 5G technology and advantages to us. It is the first attempt at microwave (4G: ~2GHz) and millimeter-wave (5G: <6GHz) spectrum.  Millimeter-wave is faster than microwave one order of magnitude (x10).  He also explained 5G in terms of Data Rate, Latency, Mobility, Connection Density, Spectrum Efficiency and Antenna Access.
