CityU ITME Orientation 2022

 Dr. YC Chau and I supported the orientation program for “Bachelor of Engineering in Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering (BEng ITME) 工學士 (智能製造工程學)” on 29th Aug 2022. We taught a course of ASDE 2066 “Professional Engineering Practice”.


In the beginning, Prof. C. Y. DANG (Acting Head, ADSE) gave welcome speech. 


There are more than 30 students attended the orientation program in 2022.


Dr. Sherman NGAN (Deputy Major Leader) then briefed the Academic Honesty, Discovery-enriched Curriculum (DEC) and Outcomes Based Teaching and Learning (OBTL).


After that Mr. ML Wong (Technical Officer, IT) introduced the safety program in the laboratory. He said safety is always the most important thing in ADSE laboratories and would arrange laboratory tour in the first or second week.


The representative of Language Centre briefed what service they provided to support students in academic English. 


Finally, Dr. Siyang GAO (Major Leader) gave an introduction to Major Structure and Requirements of ITME program.  He also mentioned Hong Kong’s strategic goal of re-industrialization.


After the orientation, the first class of ADSE 2066 was performed immediately.  YC and I attended the beginning of the class and introduced our lectures requirement and assignment.


I took a group photo with students for memory before we left.


Then YC and I have tea time to discuss our new course in PolyU named “Management of Innovation and Technology”.

HKSQ AGM 2022 & Seminar on “Quality and Sustainability: A Case Study of A S Watson”

HKSQ Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2021/2022 was held on 26th Aug 2022 both online and onsite in CityU. After that we invited a guest speaker Mr. Patrick Chiu to give us AGM Seminar named “Quality and Sustainability: A Case Study of A S Watson”. Before AGM, we took a group photo both online and onsite for memory. 


Then I chaired the AGM and reported all activities in the past year. Our treasurer Ms. Angela Wong reported HKSQ financial status. Our first TID funded project for supporting startup would be completed in 2022.


New exco team was elected and we congratulated our first chairlady Dr. Jane Wong of HKSQ.


We took a group photo through zoom again.


The AGM Seminar “Quality and Sustainability: A Case Study of A S Watson” started after meeting immediately. Mr. Patrick Chiu (Founder & President, Hong Kong Society for the History of Pharmacy) was our guest speaker. His talk separated into three parts including 1. Business History, 2. Quality of Century-Old Products and 3. Business Transformation and Sustainability.


Firstly, Mr. Chiu quoted W. Edwards Deming statement “Performance of management should be measured by potential to stay in business, to protect investment, to ensure future dividends and jobs through improvement of product and service for the future, not by quarterly dividend.” That explained how success of A S Watson which has 16,000 stores and 140,000 employees in 28 markets in Asia and Europe now. During this time, I took a photo to show the onsite participants.


The background business and history were briefed and he pointed out the turning point for A S Waston in 1982 that Li Ka-Shing acquired major part from HSBC.


After that he stated Watson’s century-old products including soda water (since 1876), distilled water (since 1903) and Flower Pagoda Cakes (花塔餅). 


Mr. Chiu also introduced the history of Opium and its consumption and tax revenue in Hong Kong from 1871 to 1940.


Finally, Mr. Patrick Chiu mentioned Watson’s business transformation and sustainability. Their success is included Branding in the past 180 year that are trustworthy, trendy and sporty; creating blue ocean business strategy, fit to Kenichi Ohmae’s 3C (Corporation, Customer, Competition) strategic triangle, etc. Accelerating technology is the key to A S Watson’s overall strategy.


Lastly, he introduced his new book that recorded the full story of AS Watson’s Journey to Greatness.


I represented HKSQ to present a souvenir to the speaker.


And then we took a group photo with online members and speaker.


At the end, HKSQ exco member had dinner with speaker together.

Webinar on Use of Tianhe-2 Supercomputing 2022 - 「天河二號」應用介紹及個案分享會

 In line with the celebration theme of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, "25 years of hard work and a new journey together 「砥礪奮進廿五載 携手再上新徵程」", the Guangzhou HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute (廣州市香港科大霍英東研究院) would like to promote the country's research infrastructure to Hong Kong - " Tianhe-2 Supercomputing System Applications" and the webinar was held on 25th Aug 2022. This webinar aimed to introduce the application of the starlight cloud map platform in architectural design BIM, rendering, 3D modeling, clothing design, metaverse, industry 4.0 digital twin platform, etc. In the beginning, Mr. Kenneth Wong (President, The Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries - PVCHK) gave welcome speech.


The first speaker was Mr. Wang (王棟) and he introduced the National Supercomputer Center (NSCC) in Guangzhou (广州超算中心整体介绍) that serviced more than 5000 users with 300k terminal users cover the GBA.Tianhe-2 had got six champers for supercomputing in the world.


Then Mr. Wang shared NSCC’s objective, two centres, three directions, four advantages and five missions. After that he shared some applications such as earth science, ocean science and life science, etc. They also aimed to support smart city and industry, especially in anti-covid measures.  Finally, he mentioned talent training for supercomputing (e.g. EasyHPC).


The second speaker was Ms. Shen Fengyi (沈方艺) (Manager, Star Cloud Service, NSCC) and her topic was “Redefine Cloud Service in Star Cloud (星光云图平)”. Firstly, she briefed the background of infrastructure as a service (IAAS) based on GPU cloud computing power.


And then she introduced their Digital Workspace and shared some application cases such as car crash test simulation and VR live streaming.


The third speaker was Mr. Alex Yang (楊春強) (Director, Bentley) and his topic named “Bentley iTwin assist to built metaverse infrastructure”. Firstly, he briefed Bentley solution and then explained the digital twin’s maturity levels. 


Finally, he demonstrated some application cases including Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and Smart Campus in HKSTP.


The fourth speaker was Dr. Long (龍潇) and his topic entitled “BIM collaboration + GPU cloud”. Firstly, he briefed the core and characteristic of BIM technology. And then he mentioned GPU cloud and its core technology.


Lastly, he demonstrated the collaboration platform for BIM and design employing GPU cloud infrastructure.


The fifth speaker was Ms. Xu Nan and her presentation named “Virtual Fashion Design”. In the beginning, she introduced ESMOD International Fashion Institute and Universities Group that covered 13 countries with 20 schools. Then she mentioned fashion design in Metaverse.


Ms. Xu demonstrated 3D design using different software. Lastly, she said fashion industry contributed 10% of carbon emission in the earth. 


Using supercomputing power and design under metaverse could reduce much raw material, scrap, transportation and storage area, etc.


The last speaker was Ms. Meidan QI (NSCC) and she introduced different preferential policies for supporting Tianhe-2 users in Hong Kong such as annual plan for CPU/GPU time, award for 10k CPU/GPU time for famous publications, contribution to public account of NSCC and your study using Tianhe-2 as show case. 


More and more preferential policies are provided including individual user or industry user.

Metrology Symposium 2022 (Metrology and Everyday Life)

 Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification (HKCTC), Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), Government Laboratory (GL) and Standards and Calibration Laboratory of Innovation and Technology Commission (SCL) jointly organized the online Metrology Symposium 2022 on 12th Aug 2022.  The theme is “Metrology and Everyday Life”. Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) was one of supporting organizations. Precise measurement can provide a solid foundation for the development of science and technology, thereby improving people's quality of life. The seminar aimed to share some applications of metrology that are closely related to our everyday life, and introduce the scientific principles behind them.


In the beginning, Dr. Eric Sze on behalf of Prof. Reggie Kwan (Provost, HKMU) to give welcoming address. Then Mr. Arthur Au (Deputy Commissioner for Innovation & Technology) gave an opening remark. After that all guests took a group photo.


The first speaker was Mr. Andrew AU (Electronics Engineer, SCL) and his topic entitled “What Makes Our Phones So Smart in Motion Detection?” Firstly, Mr. AU explained smartphone sensor that is a small device or module that analyzes the conditions around it and sends them to the processor in quantitative form. Smartphone sensors measure various aspects such as ambient light, device orientation, movement, etc. Different smartphone sensors frequency use table was discussed.


Then Mr. AU selected two sensors for detailed discussion and they were Accelerometer (detect linear motion) and Gyroscope (detect rotational motion). They are module using MEMS for smartphone and its SEM photo was demonstrated.


Finally, he demonstrated the principle of MEMS Gyroscope – Coriolis effect. Gyroscope or gyro sensor is a device which is designed based on conservation of angular momentum, measures or maintains orientation and angular velocity.


The second speaker was Dr. Boris WONG (Chemist, GL) and her topic was “Chemical Metrology and Our Daily Life”. Firstly, Dr. WONG briefed chemical measurement in our daily life including commodities, toys, foods, environment, etc.


And then Dr. WONG mentioned three key elements for reliable measurement and they are Metrological Traceability, Metrological Comparability and Measurement Uncertainty.


The Metrological Traceability and Comparability were explained that Traceability through dissemination of CRM and Comparability through instrument and test method comparison. Finally, he explained Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMC) and government laboratory is designated institute (DI capability is equivalent to NMI).


The third speaker was Dr. Alvis AU-YEUNG (Electronics Engineer, SCL) and his presentation named “A Vanishing Second”. In the beginning, Mr. AU-YEUNG briefed the significant of time in our daily life including cooking, sport competition, photography, etc. Then he told us the definition of second.


After that he introduced universal time (UT) including UT0, UT1 (small movement of the Earth correction) and UT2 (Seasonal effect).


Finally, Mr. AU-YEUNG explained the leap second between TAI and UTC. If leap second is positive, they can correct it. But they met difficulty for negative leap second. Some possible solutions including vanished the second at 23:59:59 or 00:00:00; or adjust the frequency of clock over some interval, or increase the tolerance in |UT1 - UTC| to a new limit; or Ignore lead seconds.


During the break, a video of SCL was showed.

Mr. George TANG (Electrical and Mechanical Engineer, SCL) was the fourth speaker and his topic was “Length Measurement in Our Daily Life”. Firstly, he briefed the role of SCL is to disseminate the knowledge and techniques of metrology through other customer services.  Then he introduced Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR).


After that Mr. TANG demonstrated Laser Distance Meter (LDM) using time of flight principle. SCL is only HOKLAS accredited calibration laboratory provide LDM service up to 20m.


Finally, Mr. TANG said it is much crucial for the top metrology institute/national metrology institute (NMI) to provide a correct measurement value (with true uncertainty level). SCL got a very good results from the international comparison.


Dr. Eric TP SZE (Associate Professor, OUHK) was the fifth speaker and his presentation entitled “Measuring Microplastics in Hong Kong Environmental Water Samples”. In the beginning, Dr. SZE mentioned the plastic waste in Hong Kong in 2020.


Then he explained microplastic type including primary and secondary microplastics both within the range from 1 um to 5 mm.


After that Dr. SZE introduced the methodology to identify the microplastics in environmental waters and to quantify small microplastics down to 1 um. Finally, he shared their research and found microplastics in bottled water.


Mr. Cliff SH Wong (Electronics Engineer, SCL) was the last speaker and his topic named “Metrological Information Infrastructure in Digital Era”. He mentioned the CIPM to undertake the development and promotion of an SI Digital Framework including digital representation of the SI, digital certificates and FAIR principles.


Data’s FAIR principles were discussed and they are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.


Finally, he introduced the SI digital framework and demonstrated some architecture for explanation.
