Activities Summary 2017

Dinner with Prof. Jianbo Yang (External Academic Advisor, SEEM, CityU) from the University of Manchester

I was honor to be invited by SEEM Dept., CityU to have dinner with Dr. KS Chin (Programme Leader, SEEM Dept., CityU) and Prof. Jianbo Yang (Director, Decisionand Cognitive Sciences Research Centre (DCS), Manchester Business School, The University of Manchester) on 29th Dec 2017.  Prof. Yang is External Academic Advisor of BEng in Systems Engineering and Management and I am one of the industrial advisors.  We had lunch in Science Park on 13th April 2012.  After today’s assessment by Prof. Yang, we had a dinner together.

An External Academic Advisor (EAA) is an academic from an institution other than the University, who provides expertise to an academic unit. The EAA is appointed for an academic unit or a programme / programmes of an academic unit by the Head of a college/school/centre. The primary responsibility for an EAA is to assist the academic unit in maintaining the international standards of its programme(s); and contribute to the strategic growth of Academic Unit and the University as a whole.

Industrial Advisor (Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, CityU) serves an important role in bridging academic programmes with the industry and the community at large. Industrial Advisor will join Programme Committee to express views on the appropriateness of the programme of study for employment, the expected quality of graduates and the improvement of course design and review, teaching and student learning.

HKSQ Lunch with Mr. Srinivasan Ramasamy (Former Chairman, NIQR) & his family in Hong Kong Science Park

We are great that Mr. R. Srinivasan (Former Chairman, NIQR; Sr. GM – Operations, Natesan Synchrocones Pvt. Limited) and his family visiting Hong Kong and meeting Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) members.  My wife and I (Chairman, HKSQ) arranged a lunch in ClubONE restaurant in Hong Kong Science Park.  We took a photo during the lunch for memory.

During lunch, Mr. R. Srinivasan introduced the background of National Institution for Quality & Reliability (India) (NIQR) to me.  NIQR is more than 30 years old (established in July 1987).  NIQR structure is HQ and Branches in Chennai, Delhi and Pune, etc.   They provided different activities such as program for shop flow operation, Engineers and Managers on QA. Monthly lectures on various topics are provided by eminent personalities from Industry and two memorial lectures annually which made huge contribution to NIQR. The fellowships to their quality engineers are tied up with ASQ.  They also published bimonthly newsletter.  
Finally, he introduced the National Convention 2018 and the theme named “Digital Quality for Disruptive Future” in the National Convention 2018 started in Aug.

After lunch, I led them to visit Science Park and our laboratories.  Firstly, we visited Green 18 building.  Sri Krithi took a photo with green robot.

HKCTC & PolyU meeting in Science Park for Food Hygiene Management

During HKAS liaising meeting, I met Ms. Lynn Ho and we discussed about Science Park Hygiene Control mechanism.  It is golden opportunity to be cooperated with PolyU to implement the Food Hygiene Standard Certification System (FHSCS).  Therefore, we arranged a three parties meeting in Science Park on 23rd Dec 2017.  In the beginning, Mr. Kevin Edmunds (Senior Manager, Sustainability, HKSTP) briefed our licensing requirement for catering and restaurant type tenants which included Safety, Health and Environment requirements, as well as, Food Hygiene monitoring mechanism. They needed to submit food hygiene report, which performed by Certification Bodies, to us quarterly.


Ms. Jane Lee (Secretary-General Testing and Certification, HKCTC) briefed the role of HKCTC and would like to promote testing and certification in Hong Kong.  Food Hygiene Standard Certification System (FHSCS) was one of their focus items.

HKSTP & HKQAA meeting with EMSD for Startup Innovation Procurement

After meeting Mr. Richard C.W. Chan (Assistant Director, EMSD) in CLP Power QCC Convention 2017 on 8th Dec 2017.  EMSD was found interested in the procurement of Startup Innovation service/product through Science Park arrangement and HKQAA Registration – Start-ups scheme.  Therefore, I arranged a meeting with HKQAA, HKSTP Incubation Program team and EMSD Quality Team on 20th Dec 2017.  It is my first time to go to EMSD HQs.

HKCTC Seminar on Testing and Certification for Environmental Excellence

The Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification (HKCTC) and Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) co-organized a seminar named “Testing and Certification for Environmental Excellence” held on 18th Dec 2017.  With increasing awareness of the importance of environmental protection, many enterprises and organizations had put in place green management and energy conservation measures.  This seminar aimed to introduce how testing and certification services could help improve the environment and enhance energy efficiency for buildings, facilities and offices.  I met Mr. Dominic Lam (CEO, CMATCL) and he was the first speaker.  We took a photo for memory.

The first speaker was Mr. Dominic Lam (Chairman, Hong Kong Indoor Air Quality Association) and his presentation entitled “Indoor Air Quality Control for Offices and Facilities”.  Firstly, he briefed IAQ parameters included Physical (Air Temp, RH and Air Movement), Biological (Airborne Bacteria) and Chemical (CO2, CO, RPS, TVOC, NO2, O3, HCHO and Rn) parameters.

Visit to Song Shan Lake (松山湖)

Minda and I were happy to have a visit to Song Shan Lake, Dongguan with Dr. Liu and Mrs. Liu on 17th Dec 2017 (Sunday).  We were invited by Mr. Peter SUEN.  We had lunch in Hyatt Hotel and then visited outside.  We took a photo in front of the Song Shan Lake International Club.


We were near Taiwan Hi-Tech Park and Cross-Strait Biotech Industrial Cooperation Base.

CityU EngD Society AGM and Annual Dinner 2017

The CityU Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Society in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM) was organized AGM and Annual Dinner on 16th Dec 2017. It is a great honor that I was one of two cohorts to give talks.  Before the AGM, we took a group photo for memory.

We started the AGM first and discussed each items and recorded our discussion and future direction of CityU EngD Society.  It was about 1 hour discussion.


The World Financial & Innovation Forum 2017

I was honor to be invited by Prof. Philip Chan (Founding President - IpostDocA) to attend the World Financial and Innovation Forum cum Launching Ceremony Blessing for the World Chinese Economic Prosperity which organized by World Investment and Financing Forum (North America), HK Multi-National Enterprises Union, World Headquarters of Chinese Family Research Association, China red rich wealth Group Co., Ltd. and Zhongcai Cinda (BJ) Investment Management Co., Ltd. held on 16th Dec 2017.  International Postdoctor Association was one of co-organizers.

Mr. Chiang (張省會) (President, Zhongcai Chinda (BJ) Investment Management Co., Ltd. (中財信達(北京)投資管理有限公司)) gave welcome speech. He hoped to combine the culture and investment together through One Belt One Road strategy.

HKSQ Seminar on Out of the Crisis of the Quality Professional

The seminar named “Out of the Crisis of the Quality Professional: The New Renaissance in the Quality Discipline” was organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and co-organized by SEEM Dept., CityU and ASQ Hong Kong.  In the beginning, Dr. Lotto Lai (Chairman, HKSQ) introduced Mr. Juhani Anttila background that he is an independent international expert, Venture Knowledgist Quality Integration.  Mr. Juhani Anttila gave many lectures at several universities including Helsinki Technology University (Master of Quality Programme), Universite de Fribourg, Switzerland, University of Oulu and University of Lapland, Rovaniemi Finand.  He is an Academician in IAQ; and member of ISO TC 176.


Mr. Juhani Anttila (Academician, IAQ) shared his long-term business perception and research as well as his involvement in standardization.  He clarified the essence of quality and presented a solid scientific baseline for the ontological fundamentals of the quality discipline.  


He said serious quality problems had been reported regarding industrial and public civil service organization.  One of key reasons is bad quality of management or Quality Management is not effective.

Hansecontrol Group (HK) visit HKSTP Laboratory

Ms. Heike Schoenfeldt (Head of Technical Documentation (Great China), HCTS Hansecontrol Certification and Testing Services Ltd.) and Mr. Raymond Lau (Project Manager, HCTS Hansecontrol Certification and Testing Services Ltd.) visited HKSTP laboratory on 14th Dec 2017.  We had a short meeting to understand each other service background and seek for future cooperation.  I found that Hansecontrol group was not only a testing house but also helped company to prepare technical documentation for different requirement such as CE or other legal requirement in Europe.  Firstly, we visited our Reliability Laboratory.  We took a group photo for memory.

HKSTP Lunch & Learn – Investment

HKSTP Lunch & Learn named “Investment” presented by our investment team.  The agenda included “Global Investment Trends”, “Favorable Government Policies”, “Investment Jargons”, “Investors” and “Buy Side & Sell Side”.


Firstly, comparison of new and old economy in different market were discussed and Hong Kong was found that only 3% of new economy in the stock market.  USA’s stock market for new economy form 47% to 60%.

CLP Power QCC Convention 2017

I was honor to be VIP judge of the annual CLP Power big event named “CLP Power QCC Convention 2017”.  After the evaluation panel interview on 1st Nov 2017, the final performance showed was held on 8th Dec 2017.  CLP has launched the Quality Control Circle Convention (QCC) to provide a platform for staff to submit creative ideas to improve processes, procedures and operations annually.  All guest judges took a group photo with Mr. Cathen Ho (Acting Senior Director – Power Systems).


Guest judges from left were Dr. Aaron Tong (Managing Director, TQM Consultants Co., Ltd.), Ms. Emily Wong (Business Improvement Leader, HAECO), Mr. Teddy Liu (GM, Corporate & Talent Development, New World Development Co., Ltd.), Mr. Daniel Wong (Senior Manager, Special Systems, HKAA), Dr. Michael Li (Former President, ISIHK) and I (Manager – Quality System, HKSTP).


There were twelve projects selected for presentation. We considered 5 presentation quality dimensions for marking such as Quality tools employed, Innovation idea, clarification, timing and interesting.

EA Chairman visit HKSTP Laboratories and Platform Show Cases

It was my honor that Dr. Daria Wong (Accreditation Officer, HKAS) accompany with Dr. Thomas Facklam (Chairman of the European Co-operation for Accreditation (EA); Head of Special Tasks of Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH (DAkkS), Germany) to visit Laboratories and three key platform show cases of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) on 6th Dec 2017. This visit is sponsored by the HKSAR through the Sponsored Visitor Programme (SVP) which intended to present to renowned visitors around the world a full and balanced picture of Hong Kong and hopefully promote Hong Kong economic and financial strengths.  In the beginning, We took the group photo in front of my office.

In the beginning, Mr. Kevin Edmunds (Sr. Manager, Sustainability, HKSTP) presented the overview of HKSTP and then I presented the Laboratories accreditation, certification and service to the guest.

IISE Seminar on “Moving Up Your Business by 3D Printing”

The Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineers (IISE) arranged a seminar named “Moving Up Your Business by 3D Printing” on 5th Dec 2017 in CityU.  Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) was one of supporting organizations.  The seminar aimed to provide updated professional knowledge of 3D Printing to both the professionals and the management of organizations to encourage more investment to this technology.


In the beginning, Mr. Peter Fung (Former Chairman, HKSQ) represented CityU to give welcome speech and introduced the SEEM department to the participants.


Mr. Harry Li (President, IISE (HK)) then gave an opening speech and introduced IISE(HK).


The seminar had three topics as below.
Topic 1: Industrial Applications of 3D Printing

Topic 2: Proper Engineering Technique for Building Impressive 3D Models

Post-National Quality Conference 2017 Dinner & Visit in Dammam, Saudi Arabia

The 6th National Quality Conference (NQC) organized by Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) from 28th to 30th Nov 2017.  After the opening ceremony on 28th Novand the Day 1 program on 29th Nov, SASO arranged gala dinner and market visit to all guests.  I would like to share our happy night below.

We all were honor to be invited by Dr. Saad Kasabi (SASO Governor) to have dinner in Sunset Beach – AlKhobar.  


When we were inside the resort, performers gave us sword and dancing.



The 6th National Quality Conference 2017 in Dammam, Saudi Arabia – Day 2

The 6th National Quality Conference (NQC) organized by Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) from 28th to 30th Nov 2017. It aims to meet the updates and enhances the quality culture through spreading the latest knowledge in this field.  The slogan of the Conference is “Quality ... the path toward excellence and leadership” combines the main goal of the Conference together with the latest updates in the current situation.   During my session, I worn Saudi Arabia traditional cloth “Thobe and Qotra” and took photo with Minda in the hall for memory.


Day 2 (30th Nov 2017)
The keynote speaker was Prof. Wan Seon Shin (Former President – Korean Society for Quality Management) and his topic entitled “Korean Way for Excellence in Quality”.  In the beginning, Prof. Shin compared different cities/Countries from past to present including New York, Dubai, Shanghai, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Seoul, etc.  A huge change was observed.


Then he proposed the Quality Slopes that would change your relative position after 5 years.  Firstly, you needed to define your performance goals and found out your slopes in attaining goals.  The essence of growth in Korea was come from Great Effort, Good Strategies, Good Leaders and Great Partners.

The 6th National Quality Conference 2017 in Dammam, Saudi Arabia – Day 1

The 6th National Quality Conference (NQC) organized by Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) from 28th to 30th Nov 2017. It aims to meet the updates and enhances the quality culture through spreading the latest knowledge in this field.  The slogan of the Conference is “Quality ... the path toward excellence and leadership” combines the main goal of the Conference together with the latest updates in the current situation.   Before the conference, Minda and I took a photo in the hall.


Day 1 (29th Nov 2017)
The first keynote speaker was Dr. Khaled Al Sabti (President of Education Evaluation Commission) and his topic entitled “Quality and Business Excellence path to Saudi Vision 2030”.  He said “An innovation is the implementation of a new or significantly improved product (good or service), or process, a new marketing method, or a new organizational method in business practices, workplace organization or external relations.” 


In his talk, there were four key points as follows:
i.             Outlined Vision 2030 and showed how support of innovation is a key factor of the objectives and initiatives of Vision 2030.
ii.           Introduced innovation, presents its major types, show its correlation with the competitiveness of nations, and trace its role in the four industrial revolutions.
iii.          Focused on the role of governments and the private sector in spurring innovation, and present models of different arrangements that countries have pursued in this respect.
iv.         Shed light on the national innovation system in the Kingdom by outlining its key components.

The 6th National Quality Conference 2017 in Dammam, Saudi Arabia – Opening Ceremony

The 6th National Quality Conference (NQC) organized by Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) from 28th to 30th Nov 2017. It aims to meet the updates and enhances the quality culture through spreading the latest knowledge in this field.  Implementation of quality and its practices helps us to achieve the Saudi vision 2030 using the latest quality standards.  The opening ceremony was held on 28 Nov 2017 at 7:00pm.  I took a photo in front of the stage.  


Before the opening ceremony, Dr. Ayed Alamri (President of Saudi Quality Council) led speakers’ preparation pre-meeting.  


He introduced the program and rules as well as thanks all speakers whose participating the 6th NQC to contribute the Saudi Vision 2030.  


Then we introduced ourselves.
