The seminar named “Out of the
Crisis of the Quality Professional: The New Renaissance in the Quality
Discipline” was organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and co-organized
by SEEM Dept., CityU and ASQ Hong Kong.
In the beginning, Dr. Lotto Lai (Chairman, HKSQ) introduced Mr. Juhani
Anttila background that he is an independent international expert, Venture
Knowledgist Quality Integration. Mr.
Juhani Anttila gave many lectures at several universities including Helsinki
Technology University (Master of Quality Programme), Universite de Fribourg,
Switzerland, University of Oulu and University of Lapland, Rovaniemi Finand. He is an Academician in IAQ; and member of
ISO TC 176.

shared his long-term business perception and research as well as his
involvement in standardization. He
clarified the essence of quality and presented a solid scientific baseline for
the ontological fundamentals of the quality discipline.
He said serious quality problems
had been reported regarding industrial and public civil service organization. One of key reasons is bad quality of management
or Quality Management is not effective.
The big gap between quality profession and business & societal environments was observed. Juhani said that training was not relevant business today and business environment had changed. One of big problems was the basic concept of Quality was ambiguous.
Juhani said the composite service
should be Hareware (HW) plus Software (SW) plus Man-ware (MW). But serving people and quality people didn’t
talk to each other.
Then Juhani proposed to expand
the quality practices from organization to individual and society. He then said their solution to the crisis was
renaissance of the quality profesion on two levels:
1.
Theoretical and scientific of the quality discipline – The renaissance
in thinking

Ontological foundation of the quality related phenomena
-
Epistemology for the body of the quality knowledge
2.
Quality Integration – The renaissance in practice
-
Quality concept with the business specific meaning
-
Creative case-by-case integration of the quality management with the
real operation
After that Juhani introduced Popper’s
Three World Theory. The World 1 was Real
Things and Processes, World 2 was Mental Models and World 3 was Conceptual
Models. He proposed to understand the
reality situation and then to improve the conceptionalization.
And then he mentioned quality
integration and firstly he stated the conceptual foundation as follows:
Quality: Perceived fulfillment of
the needs and expectations
Quality management: Managing the
organization with regard to quality
Quality improvement: Increasing
the ability to fulfill quality requirement
Quality assurance: Providing
confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled.
Juhani said quality like India
food that you can’t see any spicy item but taste spicy.
Finally, he pointed out three
challenges to the quality profession for the quality renaissance (reborn).
1.
Quality and quality management of individuals – Quality of life
2.
Quality and quality management for the society – Quality of society
(e.g. I4.0 & Smart City)
3.
Quality management in SMEs and startups.
Lastly, Juhani discussed how to
bridge the chasm between theory and practice in Quality Integration.
