Visit to Material Tech for starting COMP Students’ Capstone Project

I appreciated Mr. Felix Chan (Managing Director, Material Tech) and Mr. Herman Tang (Assistant General Manager) support COMP students’ capstone project “LKH2: Robot Arm Control System for Concrete Cube Handling” and I lead my students to visit their construction laboratory named “Material Tech Co. Ltd.” on 9^th Sep 2025. At the end of visit, we took a group photo inside the laboratory for memory. (Remark: Unfortunately, Ting Kam Kei was sick and Mak Ka Chun was not available.)

In the beginning, Mr. Herman Tang (Assistant General Manager) briefed us the general operation and business of Material Tech.

Then he led us to visit the workshop and testing laboratories. He explained the Rebar Tensile Strength.

Equipment and software used for measuring of steel bar thread.

Workshop for tailor-make fixture used for specific tests.

Concrete cubes conditioning moisture room was mentioned.

The key test for students’ capstone project was “To measure the dimension and weight of small concrete cubes” which was planned to use robotic arm in near future.

The operation was demonstrated.

For robotic arm pick up movement, they would arrange another area with enough space for pick up the small concretes and then move to dimension measure site, as well as, weight balance. Lastly, move the small concretes back to the table.

We hope that students will be able to program the robotic arm for this task. The robotic arm has been ordered and is awaiting shipment.

Visit to HKPMAC for starting Students' Capstone Project

On 4 Sep, I lead my three COMP students and invited my friend Mr. Matthew Tsui (Managing Director, App2One Limited) to visit Hong Kong Precious Metals Assay Centre (HKPMAC) under Hong Kong Gold Exchange (HKGX) for starting students’ Capstone Project entitled “Development of Laboratory Information System (LIMS) for operation performance enhancement”.

Firstly, Dr. Kathy Fu (Lab Manager, HKPMAC) explained the background and normal operation flow to students.

Inside the laboratory, different tests related to gold were introduced.

After that Kathy briefed the existing daily operation data input and extraction for reporting.

Finally, Mr. Brian Fung (CEO, HKGX) joined us. I presented the invitation letter of industrial advisor to Brian and Kathy and then we took a group photo.

Afterwards, Kathy led everyone to visit the Hong Kong Gold Exchange and conducted a simulated exchange process. I selfie with Matthew.

The participants simulated the old practice of gold exchange.

They had process agenda.

Lastly, we took a photo for memory.

After the visit, Matthew and I went to PolyU to have lunch with Dr. Rocky Lam. I invited them to give guest lecture in my e-Business class. During the lunch, we also meet Prof. Allen AU and took a photo together.

Visit to Vitargent Laboratory for starting COMP Student’s Capstone Project

I lead my student Mr. AU YEUNG Tsz Pui to visit the Vitargent’s laboratory on 2 Sep 2025. It is related to his capstone project named “AI-powered system to automate the detection of developmental defects in zebrafish embryos”. We would like to use machine learning to identify photos of fish embryos after toxicity testing. When arrived, we took a photo in front of the company.

Then Dr. Xueping Chen introduced their laboratory daily operation.

And she showed and explained some image results.

Her staff demonstrated the testing and counting the results.

Finally, we took a group photo inside the laboratory.

After that Minda and I invited Dr. Xueping Chen to have lunch together.

Professional Meetings in PolyU & CityU

Prof. YC Chau invited me to join their professional meeting in PolyU on 30^th July 2025. We met Dr. Rose Chen Xiaying and her professional is in hotel management and education.

Before I join their tea meeting, I got my CityU EngD gown, which I hadn't worn in 15 years. I'll wear it to upcoming PolyU graduation ceremony and photo with students.

Unexpectedly, I met Prof. Antonio Lau (School of Management, Kyung Hee University) who visited PolyU today.

After that Prof. YC Chau invited me to sharing ITF and TID funding experience to Prof. Ron Kwok (Dept., of Information System) and Prof. Edmund Lee (Dept., of Media and Communication) in CityU.

So busy today!

SAGE “Inheritance and Change” Service Optimization Launch Luncheon

I am appreciated to be invited by Dr. Danny Tang and Dr. Walter Fung to join the luncheon organization by the Hong Kong Society for the Aged (SAGE) on 21^st Jun 2025. The event named Hong Kong Society for the Aged - “Inheritance and Change” Service Optimization Launch Luncheon (香港耆康老人福利會 - 「傳承‧求變」服務優化啟動午宴). I took a photo on front of the banner when arrived.

After our last meeting in May in PolyU, Dr. Danny Tang (Hon Adviser, SAGE) invited PolyU team under Walter connection to join this lunch for further discussion on different cooperation. Danny with his friends who recognized for 60 years! Two new friends from left 1^st Mr. Alan See (Chief IS Service Manager, MTR) and left 2^nd Mr. Gene Soo (Head of Ecosystem – Global Innovation). PolyU teams including Prof. Peter Ng, I, Dr. Raymond Pang, Dr. Richard Lui and Prof. FAN Wenqi.

Before the lunch, the first item was children song performance.

Then Dr. Kim KW Mak (Chairman, SAGE) gave keynote speech entitled “Standing in the present and ooking to the future” (立於現在放眼未來).

Firstly, he shared different information about aged such as population rate of 65 or above and 80 or above for now, after 10 years and 20 years.

In order to solve the need, they proposed the Digital Elderly Care Platform (數碼護老平台).

The platform requires different stakeholder to work together to help caregivers

And then the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Chris Sun (勞工及福利局局長孫玉菡) gave the remark speech.

After that “Inheritance and Change” Service Optimization Launch Ceremony was started.

During the lunch, children kung fu show was performed.

There were many guests participated this meaningful event.

COMP Retreat 2025 (Day 3) and IET Manufacturing Forum

The last day of COMP retreat was on 20 Jun 2025. We visited HKUST (GZ) in the morning. I enjoyed the breakfast in the Sheraton hotel.

Then we left the hotel.

We arrived HKUST (GZ) again.

Dr. Kevin Yuen, Prof. WANG Qixin, Prof. Andy Chun and I took a photo in the garden.

And then we visited the Visitor Information Center.

Andy and I hold the HKUST torchlight for taking photo.

Inside the center, we visited different topics area and exhibition.

Some background introductions were described.

Prof. Henry Chan enjoyed the immersive MetaHKUST campuses.

When we left, I took a photo of the staff building in HKUST (GZ).

After that we had lunch in Guangzhou restaurant.

COMP Dept booked the whole hall in the restaurant for staffs and research students.

When I was back to PolyU, another event was performed. It is IET Manufacturing Forum with the theme “Smart Production for Sustainability”. Dr. Jack Wu and Dr. SL Mak took a photo and shared into HKSQ exco group.
