Remember Peter Merrill, ASQ & ISO Innovation Professional

A very sad news received from Peter Merrill’s LinkedIn that Mr. Peter Merril passed away on 5 Jan 2025. On behalf of the Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ), I would like to express my deepest condolences to Peter Merrill's family, friends and colleagues. It is very pity that we missed Global Innovation Guru in the world. When I first met Peter Merrill was in ASQ Fellow Lunch 2016 and then I attended his talk named “Self-Managed Team build an Innovation Culture” in ASQ World Conference on Quality and Improvement (WCQI) 2016.

I brought his books named “Innovation Never Stop” and “Do It Right The Second Time”. After that I used it as one of key elements in my innovation course for introducing innovation culture in universities.

In 2020, it was still in COVID period, I attended Peter Merrill’s Webinar entitled “ISO 56000 – Build innovation into your organization”.

Moreover, Peter Merrill was one of guest speakers for ISO Webinar on ISO 56001 and the Framework for Auditors for CB members on justification for ISO17021-x for IMS was held on 10th July 2024.

ISO TC 279 LinkedIn posted that Peter Merrill was one of ISO Excellence Awardees during the celebration of the international launch of ISO56001 in Lima – Peru on 17th Oct 2024.

Peter Merrill was one of guru affected my Innovation journey. I remembered that he gave me advice when ASQ asked experts to join ISO TC 279. He told me that it needed to inform local government for nomination. Then I forwarded ASQ invitation letter to ITC, HKSAR and then they nominated me as the 1st and only one Hong Kong observer in ISO TC 279 Innovation Management. I also quoted his contribution in my talk for HKSQ Quality Month Seminar entitled “Background and Requirements of ISO 56001 Innovation Management System”.

Remember Mr. Peter Merrill’s contribution on innovation management in ISO TC 279. RIP.

This year is the 55th anniversary of ASQ’s Certification Programs. Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) organized a webinar named “ASQ Certification Process: A Sharing Session” on 9th Jun 2023.  In the beginning, Dr. Jane Wong (Chairman, HKSQ) introduced speakers Dr. Albert Tsang and Ms. Minda Chiang.

Dr. Albert Tsang (Former Chairman and Fellow, HKSQ) was the first speaker and his talk included ASQ Certification, Application and the Examination Process.

Firstly, he briefed ASQ certificate is a symbol of excellence and internationally recognized. Key benefits for individuals included acquisition of new knowledge, increased proficiency, investment in career, etc.

Then Dr. Albert Tsang introduced that ASQ certificate requirement included education, experience and examination. For examination, open book and computer-based testing (CBT) format with multiple-choice questions. The CMQ/OE and CQA exams included a number of case studies with MC questions. Computer-based testing (CBT) would be performed bimonthly (6 per year) and got the result immediately after CBT.

Ms. Minda Chiang (Fellow of HKSQ and ASQ) was the second speaker and her topic named “Sharing on the values in ASQ Certification”.

She briefed some backgrounds of her MSc study in quality & reliability in Warwick and ASQ certificates including CMQ/OE and CPGP. She shared that initial certification could restructure her existing knowledge and continuous learning through CPD for recertification.

Then Minda mentioned the quality career paths through ASQ certifications.

Lastly, she shared some accomplishment and reputation through industry recognition and personal satisfaction. She concluded that ASQ certificates are valuable assets in her career journey.

After Q&A session, we took a group photo at the end of webinar.

ASQ Fellows Worldwide Open Forum 2022

The ASQ Fellows Worldwide Open Forum 2022 was organized by ASQ Fellows Focus Group leadership team on 17th Nov 2022 at 4:00pm Central Time (US and Canada) that is equal to 18th Nov 2022 at 6:00am HKT via Zoom. This virtual event briefly shared the ASQ Fellows Focus Group's vision and various activities. Moreover, ASQ Fellows can exchange ideas and leverage our collective strengths as a community of thought-leaders to grow and serve the Society. Dr. Aaron Tong and I attended the forum. I capture a group photo for memory.

In the beginning, Mr. Don Brecken (Chair, ASQ Fellows Focus Group) gave welcome remark to all participants.

Then he introduced the ASQ Fellows Focus Group that provide fellows with opportunities to engage ASQ communities including coaches, mentors, authors, etc.

And then Mr. Don Brecken introduced the members of ASQ Fellows Focus Group Leadership Team. After that we started our discussion. Steven Schuelka was MC and Ron was the first fellow to share his view and then followed by Stephen Hacker. Many fellows shared their views including values of ASQ member and fellow, certificate value, more adv for ASQ for employment and retainment of members, reshape membership to business side, train people including hospital and police dept sectors, improving knowledge, mentorship program, … etc.

Lastly, I was invited by Mr. Rajeev Chadha to give some opinions. I said HKSQ also faced members reduction and difficult to identify the value to members. After 6 six sigma and lead, no new wave of quality had high impact to society and community. Eventhough we discussed Quality 4.0 but people only focused on Industry 4.0 and though Quality 4.0 is by-product. I suggested to influence government and increase impact through government policy.
