Peter Merrill shared his view on how to establish Innovation Management System through his webinar named “ISO 56000 – Build innovation into your organization” on 28 July 2020. He is internationally recognized as an expert in the field of innovation. He is a member of the ISO Technical Committee writing the ISO 56000 series and is author of the books 'Innovation Generation', 'Innovation Never Stops' and the soon to be published 'ISO 56000 - Build Innovation into your QMS'. He is Head of Delegation for Canada in ISO/TC279 Innovation Management and Founding Chair of the ASQ Innovation Division.  We met in ASQ World Conference on Quality and Improvement (WCAI) 2016 and we took a photo for memory with his signed new book.

Because of his encourage, I was nominated by Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC), HKSAR to be the 1st Hong Kong observer in ISO/TC 279 Innovation Management in Sep 2016. (My Innovation Journey)

In the beginning, Peter Merrill introduced that innovation was now the competitive edge and quality was not a prime differentiator but the price of entry. So that quality and innovation is co-existing.  He briefed the relationship between ISO 56002 and ISO 9001.

Then he introduced the ISO System Structure that a set of interrelated and interacting elements to Quality and Innovation.  This model had proposed in the ISO/CD 50501:2017(E) as the starting point for ISO 56002 development.

And then Peter Merrill ran through the standard clause by clause and pointed out important items.  For organization context, he said culture and collaboration were important in establishing the system. QMS SWOT analysis pointed to risk and Innovation Management System (IMS) pointed to areas of opportunity and trends.  However, opportunities have its own risk that would address in clause 6 – Opportunity and Risk.  He also told us that QMS considered existing customer and supplier and IMS focused on potential customers and partners.

Peter Merrill emphasized the significant success factors for IMS were culture and collaboration.  (Remark: I read his book “Innovation Never Stops” that Chapter 3 -The Roles and the Culture stated how to determine your team members’ best contribution through key roles: Creators, Connectors, Developers and Doers. Where Peter Merrill’s self-assessment at https://questmgt.com/free-self-assessment that identified four innovation people in the organization)

After that he mentioned Clause 5 – Leadership that QMS is customer focus and IMS focus on New Value.  Your Vision should focused on future state and Strategy should be Agility.  Quality Manager should extend his role to Innovation Manager.  And then he briefed the Clause 6 - Opportunity and Risk.  Uncertainty world phenomena is VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) that we needed a good planning and innovation objectives.

Peter Merrill also discussed different organization structures (cl. 6.3) for innovation organization and then briefed the Clause 6.4 – Innovation Portfolio.  One of concepts named “Criteria to terminate an initiative” had important insight.

During discussion of Clause 7 – Support, three sub-clauses were new from ISO 9001 that were cl.7.6 – Tools and methods, cl.7.7 – Strategic intelligence and cl.7.8 – Intellectual Property.  (Remark: I would like to propose two more methods that were TRIZ from RUSSIA and Extenics from China.)

Finally, Peter Merrill mentioned the Clause 8 – Operation that including managing innovation initiatives and innovation process.  He briefed the process steps included Opportunity, Concept, Validate, Develop and Deploy. Clause 9 – Performance evaluation and Clause 10 – Improvement were similar to ISO 9001.

Lastly, he demonstrated the innovation implementation plan to us. (Remark: It could also reference his book “Innovation Never Stops” Chapter 19: Lighting the Fire, Figure 19.2 “The change team plan” for Culture and Process in this plan)
