CityU Kick-Off Ceremony of College of Science Mentorship Programme 2022-23

I was honor to be invited as mentor in the College of Science Mentorship Programme again and I have serviced the program since 2019. The Kick-Off Ceremony of College of Science Mentorship Programme 2022-23 was held on 29^th Nov 2022. Professors, mentors and mentees attended this ceremony. 

Firstly, Prof. CS Lee gave welcoming speech and reported that there are 26 mentors and 38 students in the program this year.

Then Mr. Alex Cheung was MC for this ceremony and shared his experience during my mentoring period.

I introduced the China Original Innovation Methodology named “Extenics” and invited two mentees (Mr. Alex Cheung and Mr. Jason Lee) to try developing board game so as to let students more easy to learn this theory.

Then we form a group to join the HK TECH 300 program and attended their training as well as prepare a presentation for pitching as startup. Even though we haven’t got the seek money, we learn the experience and know the weakness of the project.

I joined the group with Chemistry and Physics students.  Some industry mentors shared their view on students and gave some hints for their career development.

Finally, we all back to the main zoom room and closing the ceremony.

Aaron's Son Wedding Ceremony

Minda and I was honor to be invited by Dr. Aaron Tong to attend his son’s wedding ceremony (Chloe Chung & Jerry Tong) in Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club on 27^th Nov 2022. Aaron is former chairman of HKSQ and the 1^st China Outstanding Quality Professional awardee (中國傑出質量人) in HK and GBA (see reference).

CityU EngD Society Lunch Talk for HK TECH 300 and Startup

The CityU Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Society in the Department of Advanced Design and Systems Engineering (ADSE) was organized the lunch talk in Faculty Lounge in CityU 9/F (Bank of China Complex) on 26^th Nov 2022. It aims to introduce CityU HK TECH 300 program to cohorts and HKSQ TID funded project for startup, as well as, discussing EngD Society future development. Firstly, we took a group photo for memory.

I invited Dr. YC Chau (Adjunct Professor, ADSE; CES TECH 300 representative) introduce CityU HK TECH 300 project to us. CityU launched the project with HK$500m funding to incubate 300 start-ups in 3 years since 2021.

Dr. YC Chau briefed the different amount of funding in different stages through the program.

Until now, more than 1000 participants joined the entrepreneurship training program. (Remark: I also led two AP students joined the training last year.) 

The seed fund teams distributed in different technology areas including Deep Tech, ICT & AI, FinTech, Biotech & Health and EduTech.

After that I briefed HKSQ TID funded project (upto 1M) for quality startup sustainable business growth. 

We performed online survey and received 149 valid response and I introduced analysis method to group different questions.

After using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), I identified six key factors which are important to the startup. Finally, we selected 50 out of 149 startups for in-depth interview and further identified constitutes of challenge factors that startup faced to. 

Lastly, we published a practical guidelines for good management practices for startup and would be available in HKSQ website for free download at the end of 2022. I thank Dr. Sunny Chai’s fully support and also Dr. David Chung for early-stage consultation.

Finally, we discussed the development of EngD Society. We found that number of candidates in EngD program is small (few per year) and it was one of our membership number problems. Another issue is the society financial sustainability. Some cohorts suggested to arrange MEng class or training courses, etc. Finally, we decided to focus ESG field for some project initiative.

PolyU ISE Lecture for Group Project Presentation

The last class (Lecture 13) of “ISE 549 - Management of Innovation and Technology” under the MSc in Knowledge and Technology Management in PolyU is for group project presentation which was held on 24^th Nov 2022. Dr. Carman Lee, Dr. Vincent Fung, Dr. YC Chau and I were member of judge committee. We took a group photo at the end for memory. 

The group project was designed to propose a new product or service using TECH 300 approach for startup pitching.  There are 12 groups and each group has 6 to 7 members. Each member presented for 1 min and prepare a video with max 7 min, as well as, 5 min Q&A.

Then I took some photos to record their presentation during Q&A.

Finally, I asked all student to rank the top 3 project by themselves and got a collective ranking.

It is very useful project for student collaboration to form a startup and sale their idea as well as time control training.

HKSQ Knowledge Transfer Meeting 2022/2023

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) new official bearers arranged a knowledge transfer meeting on 20^th Nov 2022. Mr. CP Chow (Former Chairman, HKSQ) was invited to brief us the original operation practices in HKSQ including membership, financial and certification, etc.  We took a group photo with external contractors to transfer the duties in our chairlady’s home.

It is a good meeting for knowledge transfer from generation to generation of HKSQ.

Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School (YLMASS) 45th Anniversary Open Day

This year is my mother school “Yuen Long Merchants Association Secondary School (YLMASS)” (元朗商會中學) 45th Anniversary and the open day held on 19^th Nov 2022. Minda and I joined the event and took a photo in front of the main entry. 

We registrated in the hall underground.

Then we went into the hall and Mr. Yau (Yau Sir) (Principal, YLMASS) gave welcome speech.

I met my classmate Mr. Emil Shet family and took a photo together.

And then Mr. Liu (Liu Sir) sing a song to all alumni.

After that I visited different classroom of my mother school and found AI Inno Lab sponsed by Microsoft!

Very good facilities!

I also went to the science lab.

Long time without visit here.

Finally, my wife and I visited the art room. The wall draw is very beautiful.

Then we took a photo inside the art room and there had some art work activities for alumni families.

Students’ works were demonstrated here.

Many people enjoyed the performance.

Before I left, I took a photo of JUPAS offer result and it looked good for junior classmates to enter into different universities.

It is very happy memorable event and Yau Sir will resign in this year.
