HKSQ Social Event – Sai Ying Pun Heritage Walking Tour

HKSQ Social Event named “Sai Ying Pun Heritage Walking Tour” on 13^th Dec 2025. In 1851, due to the Taiping Rebellion (太平天國) and the Hakka-Local (土客糾爭) dispute, a large number of refugees flooded into Hong Kong. The government redeveloped the old camp into a new Chinese community, Sai Ying Pun (西營盤). This tour let us to visit some of the famous buildings in the area. A group photo was taken before start the tour.

Minda and I arrived early.

Then Dr. Jane Wong (Chairman, HKSQ) and Ms. Angela Wong (Vice-chairman, HKSQ) arrived and took a photo with Minda.

Then Mr. CP Chow explained the tour plan to us.

We took a group photo inside the lift.

The first location is “Centre Street”.

And then we arrived the Bonham Road Government Primary School. A statue of Sun Yat-sen stands near the fountain.

We passed through the Former Upper Levels Police Station and saw that beautiful wall.

Minda and I took a photo.

We took a photo for memory.

After that we visited the “Light Time Tunnel” that we witness the reprise of histories and cultures.

CP led us to visit the façade of the old mental hospital, high street (高街舊精神病院).

Then we went to the Eastern Street and it is a drug rehabilitation center.

When we continued to walk, we met the interested coffee shop named “Mental Sanctuary” (精神庇佑所).

And then we passed the Yu Lok Lane to visit the Heritage Conservation Building.

Inside the building, the story of Sai Ying Pun was indicated.

We saw Tsan Yuk Hospital (贊育醫院) across the road.

We passed through the Hong Kong Resource Centre for Heritage (香港文化古蹟資源中心).

Inside the Tsan Yuk Hospital, it is Yan Chai Hospital BOC Medical Centre.

Finally, we took a group photo in front of Tsan Yuk Hospital.

We went back in the Sai Ying Pun Station B3 entry.

3D murals were observed. Today's visit was very meaningful.

HKSQ Social Event - Hong Kong Cemetery Heritage Walking Tour

HKSQ Social Event named “Hong Kong Cemetery Heritage Walking Tour” on 1^st Mar 2025. Hong Kong Cemetery is located on the western side of Happy Valley (previously known as the Protestant Cemetery or the Colonial Cemetery) which is the oldest western cemetery in Hong Kong since 1845. In the beginning, we took a group photo in the main entry.

Mr. K.C. Hui was our docent. He explained the design of the fountain.

He then introduced the British naval tombs related to the Opium Wars.

The grave of Henrietta Hall Shuck (October 28, 1817 – November 27, 1844), the first American woman missionary to China and the first Western woman to live in Hong Kong, is mentioned. Students of Henrietta High School would visit from time to time.

Orthodox Catholic Church (東正教) cross is different with others. The Triple Cross in Orthodox Christianity symbolizes the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, with the top beam representing Pilate's inscription, the middle beam for His nailed hands, and the slanted bottom beam signifying the footrest and the divergent fates of the two thieves crucified alongside Him.

We saw a very famous person in Hong Kong who is SIR Robert Ho Tung!

Then Dr. Aaron Tong joined us and we took a photo in front of the church.

We saw many grave with Freemasonry (共濟會) logo (The Square and Compasses).

Afterwards, we visited the tomb of Yeung Ku-wan (19 December 1861 – 11 January 1901) who was a Chinese revolutionary of the late Qing dynasty.

The original tomb was built to avoid the Qing, so it had no name, only a tomb number. Few years ago, Hong Kong government built a marble platform for him.

This cemetery was built in 1975 for moving graves during the construction of the Aberdeen Tunnel.

Mr. Chiang Chen (蔣震) who was a famous Hong Kong industrialist, founder and honorary chairman of Chen Hsong Group, was also in this cemetery.

When we left, we passed the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery (天主教墳場) and saw the funeral couplet: "Tonight my body returns to my homeland, and tomorrow your body will do the same." (今夕吾軀歸故土，他朝君體也相同。)

After the tour, we had lunch together.

HKSQ Social Event - Walking Trail on the Lam Tsuen (林村) cum Reunion Dinner

 HKSQ Social Event named “Walking trail on the TaiPo Lam Tsuen (林村)” on 26^th Jan 2025. Lam Tsuen is an area in Tai Po District, Hong Kong, noted for its Lam Tsuen wishing trees. In addition to the wishing tree and the Tin Hau Temple, there is a Fong Ma Po Public Toilet which received an award from the Hong Kong Toilet Association on World Toilet Day 2021. We took a group photo in front of Lam Tsuen archway (林村牌坊).

Then Minda and I took a photo in front of the shop named Mrs. Lam.

We had tea in the Lam’s shop before walking.

And then we went to the wishing tree and took a group photo.

Dr. Jane Wong (Chairman, HKSQ) threw oranges with wishes written on them onto the wishing tree.

Minda and I also wrote down our wishes. The fee is HK$50 and it is self-service.

Minda recorded me throwing oranges. Jane and I successfully hung on the tree on the first try.

After that Jane ring the bell to make a wish and pray.

We also visited the award-winning Ma Po Public Toilet.

Finally, we started walking up the mountain.

The scenery in the middle of the road is beautiful.

It is Ngau Kwu Leng Hiking Trail.

We continued to walking up.

Then we arrived the Wishing Pavilion (許願亭).

After we came back, we had tea again.

Lastly, we joined HKSQ Reunion Dinner in PolyU.

Most of the senior exco members reunited and had a pleasant dinner.
