HKSQ Social Event - Hong Kong Cemetery Heritage Walking Tour

HKSQ Social Event named “Hong Kong Cemetery Heritage Walking Tour” on 1^st Mar 2025. Hong Kong Cemetery is located on the western side of Happy Valley (previously known as the Protestant Cemetery or the Colonial Cemetery) which is the oldest western cemetery in Hong Kong since 1845. In the beginning, we took a group photo in the main entry.

Mr. K.C. Hui was our docent. He explained the design of the fountain.

He then introduced the British naval tombs related to the Opium Wars.

The grave of Henrietta Hall Shuck (October 28, 1817 – November 27, 1844), the first American woman missionary to China and the first Western woman to live in Hong Kong, is mentioned. Students of Henrietta High School would visit from time to time.

Orthodox Catholic Church (東正教) cross is different with others. The Triple Cross in Orthodox Christianity symbolizes the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, with the top beam representing Pilate's inscription, the middle beam for His nailed hands, and the slanted bottom beam signifying the footrest and the divergent fates of the two thieves crucified alongside Him.

We saw a very famous person in Hong Kong who is SIR Robert Ho Tung!

Then Dr. Aaron Tong joined us and we took a photo in front of the church.

We saw many grave with Freemasonry (共濟會) logo (The Square and Compasses).

Afterwards, we visited the tomb of Yeung Ku-wan (19 December 1861 – 11 January 1901) who was a Chinese revolutionary of the late Qing dynasty.

The original tomb was built to avoid the Qing, so it had no name, only a tomb number. Few years ago, Hong Kong government built a marble platform for him.

This cemetery was built in 1975 for moving graves during the construction of the Aberdeen Tunnel.

Mr. Chiang Chen (蔣震) who was a famous Hong Kong industrialist, founder and honorary chairman of Chen Hsong Group, was also in this cemetery.

When we left, we passed the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery (天主教墳場) and saw the funeral couplet: "Tonight my body returns to my homeland, and tomorrow your body will do the same." (今夕吾軀歸故土，他朝君體也相同。)

After the tour, we had lunch together.

HKSQ Social Event - Walking Trail on the Lam Tsuen (林村) cum Reunion Dinner

 HKSQ Social Event named “Walking trail on the TaiPo Lam Tsuen (林村)” on 26^th Jan 2025. Lam Tsuen is an area in Tai Po District, Hong Kong, noted for its Lam Tsuen wishing trees. In addition to the wishing tree and the Tin Hau Temple, there is a Fong Ma Po Public Toilet which received an award from the Hong Kong Toilet Association on World Toilet Day 2021. We took a group photo in front of Lam Tsuen archway (林村牌坊).

Then Minda and I took a photo in front of the shop named Mrs. Lam.

We had tea in the Lam’s shop before walking.

And then we went to the wishing tree and took a group photo.

Dr. Jane Wong (Chairman, HKSQ) threw oranges with wishes written on them onto the wishing tree.

Minda and I also wrote down our wishes. The fee is HK$50 and it is self-service.

Minda recorded me throwing oranges. Jane and I successfully hung on the tree on the first try.

After that Jane ring the bell to make a wish and pray.

We also visited the award-winning Ma Po Public Toilet.

Finally, we started walking up the mountain.

The scenery in the middle of the road is beautiful.

It is Ngau Kwu Leng Hiking Trail.

We continued to walking up.

Then we arrived the Wishing Pavilion (許願亭).

After we came back, we had tea again.

Lastly, we joined HKSQ Reunion Dinner in PolyU.

Most of the senior exco members reunited and had a pleasant dinner.

HKSQ Social Events–Walking Tour of points of Interest in Sham Shui Po

HKSQ Social Event named “Walking Tour of points of Interest in Sham Shui Po” led by Mr. CP Chow (Former Chairman, HKSQ) on 19^th Mar 2023. We started in the station of Sham Shui Po. We took a group photo once gathered.

We started the tour from Yen Chow Street.

The first location is Garden Bakery.

CP explained the history since 1935 the buying the land and the building was in 1958. The Life Bread (生命麵包) was started in 1960.

Then we visited Mei Ho House (YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel).

After that we went to the St. Thomas Church.

CP explained the stele in the church which established in 1955. The Chinese word “劬” means mother's hard work (母親的辛勞). 

We then went to Kwan Kee Store and brough some cakes.

Third Prince Temple and Pak Tai Temple were visited too.

Kwan Tai Temple was visited and it was managed by Chinese Temples Committee (華人廟宇委員會). 

Finally, we visited Pei Ho Street Public Open Space (北河街公眾休憩空間) where is original location of New Asia College (Under CUHK).

Lastly, we disbanded in the Old Sham Po Military Camp boundary block.

At the end, Minda and I had lunch with Mr. CP Chow in Hoi Lai Kok Cuisine. We had a very happy morning tour.

My 15 years Quality Related Activities Summary and Analysis (2008-2022)

 I always summarized my whole years’ quality related activities at the end of each year since 2008. It is my 15 years to do this summary and is a good time for me to review all my studies which I have shared to world quality professionals regularly. My quality related activities are classified as 8 different types and they are “Seminar/Webinar”, “Training/Workshop”, “Visit”, “Conference”, “Invited Speaker”, “Teaching Course”, “Professional Gathering” and “Arrange Visit to HKSTP”. The following diagram showed the overall activities from 2008 to 2022. The top frequency year is in 2015. When I serviced in HKSTP, I arranged different visits for university, government department (HKAS), professional bodies (HKIE, HKSQ) and customer. It is mainly to visit our laboratories.

For pie chart, the top three activities in 15 years period are Seminar/Webinar (42%), Professional Gathering (19%) and Conference (13%). It is my learning practice through seminar/webinar. Networking with different professional is the second and the third is attending conference including local and international. I have attended ANQ Congress for 20 years since 2003. Other activities including visit (9%), attending training/workshop (7%) and to be invited as speaker (5%), as well as, performed training course (1%).

The following analysis diagram separated each activities by years. Since the top two activities (Seminar/Webinar and Professional Gathering) are compared high frequency (within 20 to 60 per year), it is separated from other activities to draw another diagram. The other activities are drawn into the last diagram (below 20 per year). It is easier to observe the variation by year.

In the coming year, I will still attend quality related activities that I am interested in, as well as, to share for different quality professional in HKSQ, ANQ, ASQ and IAQ, etc. One of trend of my studies will be shift from quantitative to qualitative.

HKSQ QoL Exco Hiking on Wu Tip Shan Trail (蝴蝶山徑)

The HKSQ Quality of Life (QoL) Series had launched since 2013 and it aims to bring social activities to our members other than professional seminars, workshops or visits.  Since COVID-19 pandemic in 2019 and 2020, most of activities were pending.  HKSQ exco members arranged a Hiking on Wu Tip Shan Trail (蝴蝶山徑) on 2^nd April 2021.  We gathered in Fanling MTR Station at 9:30am.

We took a group photo in front of the entry point.

The walking path was showed in TrailWatch apps.

Walking uphill, Dr. Chin, SW, Aaron and Pat were ahead.

Mrs. Chin, Minda and I followed.

We saw our home in Sheung Shui and took a photo for memory.

Oh! We walked a lot and found that it is the entry!

It is interesting encourage words meaning that to treat this Bumpy Road (崎嶇的路) as a training.

Our team sequence changed again. Dr. Chin, SW were in the head.

Minda, Mrs. Chin and I were in middle.

Aaron and Pat were at the end.

We took a group photo again that were near the target.

After that we walked back to Fanling MTR Station.  We rest for waiting KS Chin and Mrs. Chin but had not met them.

Finally, we found that we walked away from the planned path so that KS Chin and Mrs. Chin only waited us in the MTR Station.

Lastly, we went to Sheung Shui to have lunch with Pan Fried Bun(生煎包).  This is the ultimate goal of the hiking!
