Grand Opening Ceremony of Kano-BSTQM-Quality Award

Mr. Sheikh Nizam Uddin Ahmed (Secretary General) invited us to join onsite and online event from Bangladesh Society for Total Quality Management (BSTQM) named “Grand Opening Ceremony of the Kano-BSTQM-Quality-Award (KBQA)”. The event was held on 30 July 2023 at 6:00 PM (Dhaka Time) at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka. Prof. Dr. Noriaki Kano, Professor Emeritus of Tokyo University of Science & Honorary Chair of the Asian Network for Quality (ANQ), and Deming Prize winner, as the guest of honor participated this award opening ceremony and gave guest talk.

In the beginning, Mr. A.M.M. Khairul Bashar (Former Chairman, BSTQM) introduced Kano-BSTQM-Quality-Award (KBQA).

Firstly, he briefed the background of KBQA from Deming prize to Kano visited Bangladesh in 1998. Quality award played a significant role in recognizing and promoting excellence, driving organizations towards continuous improvement, customer focus, and operation excellence.

Thus, BSTQM is making effort to establish a quality award system to boost quality and productivity. Mr. Bashar thanked Prof. Dr. Noriaki Kano to help them in establishing KBQA since last few years.

Then Mr. Bashar briefed the objectives of KBQA including strengthen international competitive advantage, high performance standard, enhancing management system and competitiveness.

After that he mentioned some benefits of KBQA such as customer loyalty, good cultures, continuously improving organization, etc. KBQA application procedures and assessment criteria (Total mark 1000) were described.

Finally, Mr. Bashar concluded that an organization’s ability is sum of contribution of all its people. He invited all organization to take action for studying TQM and KBQA guideline, then implement it and apply the award.

Prof. Dr. Noriaki Kano was the guest speaker to share his award journey in Japan. Firstly, he mentioned Japan was very poor in the past and needed to improve product quality to earn US dollar for purchasing food for Japanese.

Then Dr. Deming and Dr. Juran were invited by Japan government in 1980s and then Japan started to learn from statistical quality control from the US.

After Prof. Kano shared the secret for success in TQM is to combine “Business and TQM” but the sequence is Business first and then TQM.

Finally, he mentioned two strategies and one is “Strategy A” and the other is “Strategy J”. Strategy A is for America and they focused on effective decision making only. Strategy J is for Japanese and they focused on team work including QCC.

Prof. Kano described his experience in Deming Prize Committee and said business success through TQM. Deming Prize works as a catalyst.

Lastly, Prof. Kano said “Must not promote TQM for the sake of only challenging Kano BSTQM Award” because of promoting TQM for the sake of business success of Bangladesh companies with Kano BSTQM Award as a Catalyst.

CityU EngD Society Lunch Talk for Funding cum Dr. KS Chin Retirement Celebration

The CityU Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Society in the Department of Systems Engineering (SYE) was organized the event named “Lunch Talk for Sharing experience of ITF & TID Funding cum Dr. KS Chin Retirement Celebration” in Faculty Lounge, CityU 9/F (Bank of China Complex) on 29^th July 2023. We took a group photo of all guests and participants for memory.

In the beginning, we introduced CityU EngD Society to all cohorts and potential candidates. When Dr. Chin arrived, we took a photo before seminar started.

Dr. Szeto Wing Hong was the first speaker and he introduced his experience on applying ITF funding. Firstly, he briefed different types of Innovation and Technology Fund.

Then he gave overall view of different funding statistics and shared his view on each fundings.

After that he shared experience on different stages of the funding application.

Mr. Samuel Chui was the second speaker who had serviced in the incubation team in HKSTP. He shared his experience on some key points for incubatees to apply different fundings.

He now established a consultant company to assist enterprise to apply ITF for innovation and technology transformation, moreover, he would provide one-hour free consultancy for each company who are interested in applying ITF.

I was the last speaker to share the HKSQ TID funded project for startup. I led HKSQ to apply the TID SME support funding and successfully grant $1M in 2019.

Then I briefed the funding activities timeline including survey 150 startups and in-depth interview 50 selected startup, workshops, announcement event, guidebook, etc.

The project supported by HKSTP, Cyberport, HK Startup Council (FHKI), InvestHK, etc. I especially thanks Dr. Sunny Chai and Dr. David Chung for their support.

Finally, I shared some tips for the application such as using Chinese, clear budget for activities.

Lastly, all cohorts under Dr. KS Chin supervision took a group photo for memory.

After the talk, we had lunch and continued our discussion. I need to thank Mr. Alfa Lun (Left 1) for our photo taking who is my HKSTP colleague.

We had a good lunch and planned AGM in Nov 2023.

ESG Webinar – EQ Management & Leading New Generations

The Executive Study Group (ESG) webinar named “EQ Management & Leading New Generations – How to Lead Millennials or Even Mentor a Manic Colleague” was held by Asia Pacific Institute for Strategy Limited (APIFS) on 28^th Jul 2023. In the beginning, Dr. Mark Lee introduced the history and goal of Asia Pacific Institute for Strategy Limited (APIFS). Then he briefed webinar contents including Bipolar Disorder (狂躁抑鬱症), Stress as the Trigger, “Pressure-Release Valve” Strategy, and 7 Simple Coaching Questions.

Firstly, Dr. Mark Lee discussed a case about staff manic behaviors and surveyed participants that this behavior was minor in the office.

Then Dr. Lee explained bipolar disorder (other name as manic depression) that person would be extremely elated and his mood state would be the exact opposite of someone who is depressed. His mood would swing between depressive and manic phase. In HK, 1 out 20 people would have this symptom. Stress environment could be one of cause factors.

And then Dr. Lee surveyed us about the stress level and it is bell shape in the Moderate (54%). However, there are 18% under severe stress level.

Many people confused consulting and coaching. Consulting can provide valuable advices to your customers or subordinates directly. Many people believed coaching to be wasted time and misused to be kind of micromanaging-as-coaching.

Dr. Lee quoted Sir John Whitmore (Father of Executive Coaching) for the definition of coaching that is unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance.

After that Dr. Mark Lee polled the percentage between coaching and consulting. Most of us choose 50% vs 50% and 30% vs 70%. So that consulting is dominated.

Then Dr. Lee quoted Jose Ortegay Gassett (Spanish philosopher) statement that “Tell me to what you pay attention and I will tell you who you are” to relieve pressure. And then three problems of coaching were introduced and they were “Small Talk Tango”, “Fixed Agenda” and “Default Diagnosis”.

Finally, he introduced 7 simple coaching questions and employed Facebook as example that “What is on your mind?” as first question.

Dr. Lee said coaching to stimulate people thinking and understanding themselves in deep and got insight through the coaching process.

The last poll used to survey us which question was the most difficult to answer. “What’s the real challenge here ‘for you’?” was the most response (41%). Many times, we often don’t know what we actually want.

Lastly, Dr. Lee quoted Manfred Max-Neef (Economist) “Fundamental Human Needs” to explain the framework to understand people really wanted.

Then 3P models - Project, People & Patterns were introduced. Sir Winston Churchill statement was quoted as conclusion that “Occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened.”

At the end, Dr. Mark Lee said we needed to create a moment so as to consolidate what people learning after coaching.

HKQF 2023-2024 Award Scheme for Learning Experiences for TIC

The meeting for 2023-2024 Award Scheme for Learning Experience (ASLE) (檢測及認證業學習體驗獎勵計劃甄選小組會議) for Testing, Inspection & Certification Industry (TIC-ITAC) under Hong Kong Qualification Framework (HKQF) was held on 27^th July 2022. Four members in TIC-ITAC and two HKQF secretary members are assigned as award panel for candidate interview to evaluation their continuous education under HKQF course and effect on their career life. We took the group photo after the meeting. We had arranged the scheme for eleven years.

HKSQ Financial Meeting and Visit to CityU Exhibition

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) official bearers meeting in Hang Seng Business Centre for e-banking affair was held on 27^th July 2023. Dr. Jane Wong (Chairman), Ms. Angela Wong (Treasurer) and I applied the limit for e-banking.

After that I had lunch in CityU.

And then I visited “The Grand Gathering of the Century – Zodiac Heads from the Yuanmingyuan (圓明園) and Important Treasures”.

Using digital technology to restructure the Yuanmingyuan was demonstrated.

The European Palaces of Changchunyuan (長春園) built by Qianlong in the early years of his reign marked the first introduction of European architecture and garden design into Chinese imperial residences.
