HKPC Industry 4.0 Implementation Workshop - Pilot Project

Industry 4.0 Implementation Workshop Series was organized by Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) on 18th Mar, 1st & 12th Apr 2019.  Mr. Patrick Kabasci (Technology Management, Fraunhofer IPT, KEX Knowledge Exchange AG) was our trainer.  Three workshops included “Industry 4.0 market and technological trends analysis, practical tools and technology”, “Industry 4.0 technical contents of pilot project” and “Industry 4.0 technical contents of pilot project” and “Industry 4.0 implementation strategic focus and steps”.  I missed the first workshop and would attend the second and third one.  I summarized the second workshop below for sharing.

During the workshop, I recognized friends and we found a team for performing exercise of the workshop.

(Left: Mr. Darik Leung (GM-Operations, Hitachi Chemical), Mr. Brian Mak (PCBA industry) and I (HKSQ))

Mr. Patrick Kabasci (Technology Management, Fraunhofer IPT, KEX Knowledge Exchange AG) was today’s trainer.

In the beginning, he mentioned the content from trends to solution.  The first workshop stated Trends and Problem Space (Jobs-to-be-done).  Today workshop was identified i4.0 Solution Space and Smart Application.

Then he briefed the problem about inadequate data and latency periods that would slow down the implementation

Mr. Kabasci described the Capability Evaluation based on Maturity Assessment.  This maturity level from 1 to 6 was employed in Germany.

And then he stated the basic value chain in production process from R&D to Planning, Logistic, Supplier, Goods receipt, Production, Assembly, Goods issue, then to Customer, Service & Maintenance, as well as, QC.

They cooperated with HKPC developed HK i4.0 maturity level from 0, 1i to 4i. Hong Kong SMEs were evaluated in the range of -1.7i to 0.7i.

Mr. Patrick Kabasci explained how to build up capabilities from starting position to next level of i4.0 through pilot projects and it needed quick wins for adding value.

After that Mr. Kabasci briefed the Smart i4.0 Navigator in management perspective.  He said i4.0 started from Value and then to Business Models, extended to Application and Enablers.

He introduced Job-based thinking for innovation was J (Job-to-be-Done), O (Objectives or Outcomes), B (Barriers) and S (Soutions).  He also stated the value creation in production through the elimination of waste through Lean Principles.  The expected quantitative benefits would be increased in efficiency and cost reduction.

Quality benefits of i4.0 application were also included.  (Remark: That’s why ASQ promoting Quality 4.0.)

Mr. Kabasic said a successful implementation of industrie 4.0 in manufacturing companies requires a holistic transformation approach.  It’s capabilities included Information System, Resources, Organization and Culture.  It did not help to be too advanced in one capability but lagging behind in another. Consistency is key!

Finally, Mr. Kabasic introduced the Smart Production (also Product and Service) Innovation Patterns with four elements and they were “Transparency”, “Connection”, “Prediction” and “Action”.

After 30min discussion, Mr. Darik Leung represented our team to present the smart production strategy based on his existing problem – lead time.  We needed single source of true (SSOT) data set.

Finally, Mr. Patrick Kabasci briefed some business cases for industry 4.0 and introduced an agile method through process (from idea to scale) to development cycle.  He said from idea to hypothesis, hypothesis to Exploration, Exploration to Pilot, and Pilot to Scale; each stage cost 10 times.  For example, it cost 5M in Pilot that would be cost 50M in Scale.

At the end, Mr. Partick Kabasci concluded the three main steps to a digital production and they were “Make measurable & connect”, “Analyze & Predict” and “Adaptive optimization”.
