IRC-SEMS aims to provide a research platform for academics and researchers, particularly young faculty and graduate students, to share and exchange experience and research findings in various disciplines of Systems Engineering and Management Science. Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM) is organizer.  School of Data Science, CityU and School of Management and Engineering, Nanjing University are co-organizer.  We took a group photo in front of the Xingyun Building (星雲樓) for memory.

I arrived the conference hall and took a photo in front of the banner.

I took a photo with Prof. Shen Houcai (沈厚才) (Professor, School of Mgt & Eng, Nanjing University).

We took a photo with guest speakers and academic friends.

In the beginning, Prof. Shen Houcai (Professor, School of Mgt & Eng, Nanjing University) chair the morning section.

Prof. Jing Zhou (Dean and Professor, School of Management and Engineering, Nanjing University) gave welcome speech and she introduced the history of Nanjing city and also their school which was one of youngest schools at Nanjing University.

Prof. Kwok L Tsui (Chair Professor, School of Data Science, CityU) gave welcome speech and he brief IRC-SEMS background and introduced three keynote speakers.

Prof. Chuangyin Dang (Acting Head and Professor, SEEM Dept., CityU) gave welcome speech and he welcome all participants and believed that the young faculty and students could develop their skills and build a strong international network through this significant conference.

The first keynote speaker was Prof. Jim Dai (Presidential Chair Professor, Institute for Data and Decision Analytics (iDDA), The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen; Leon C. Welch Professor of Engineering, School of Operations Research and Information Engineering, Cornell University) and his presentation topic entitled “Hospital Inpatient Operations: Modeling, Analysis and Optimizations”.  He introduced fidelity modeling to capture time-of-day patient waiting time (descriptive analysis): service-time models and trading off waiting & overflow (prescriptive analysis) through bed overflow decisions.

Firstly, Prof. Jim Dai introduced Emergency Department (ED) boarding patient in Singapore.  Then Prof. Jim Dai briefed their model named “Two-time-scale service time”.

Then he introduced another model named “Approximate Dynamic Programing (ADP) algorithm.  Finally, he concluded that two-service-time-models – one of models for deciding discharge timing and the other one for deciding the number of doctor rounds.  ADP algorithm could potentially reduce both the waiting time and the overflow proportion.

The second keynote speaker was Prof. Geoffrey QP Shen (Chair Professor of Construction Management, Faculty of Construction and Environment, PolyU) and his topic named “Research and Practice in Value Management for Large and Complex Construction Projects”.  Firstly, Prof. Shen introduced some mega construction projects (MCPs).

Then Prof. Shen introduced concept of “Value for Money” in Construction field.  It included Quality, Safety, Environment, Cost and Time.

And then he briefed their funded research on Value Management (VM) and developed framework for value briefing.  The following diagram showed one of their research projects in construction and its expected outcome.

Lastly, he stated the stakeholder analysis to list stakeholder and critical stakeholder concerns.  He mentioned one of benefits of using VM was to provide a forum for major stakeholders to share and learn from each other.

The third keynote speaker was Jian-Bo Yang (Professor, Decision and Cognitive Science Research Centre, Alliance Manchester Business School, The University of Manchester, UK) and his presentation was “From Bayesian Inference to Evidential Reasoning – For AI Decision System Research and Application”. Firstly, Prof. Yang briefed the Bayesian Inference using disease diagnosis as example.  There are three type of diseases named meningitis (M), concussion (C) and/or brain tumor (T).

Using Dempster’s Rule, conjunctive reasoning was combined two pieces of independent evidence to make the decision.  However, some situation such as “Counter-Intuitive” with Dempster’s Rule that did not consider the importance or reliability of evidence distinctively.

Finally, Prof. Yang introduced Evidential Reasoning (ER) rule for data analytics to decision making.  He concluded that ER rule was a generic rule for evidence combination and unique for hybrid system modelling under uncertainty.

In afternoon parallel session I, I chaired the session named “Business & Management Model”.

The first speaker in this session was Mr. Hao Liu (CityU) and his topic entitled “Designing Contracts for Competing Retailers under Asymmetric Demand Information”. He mentioned the preferences for contractual forms and two-part tariff contract could lead to “win-win” outcome for the supplier and incumbent.

The second speaker was Ms. Zhongyuan Hao (Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics) and her topic named “Direct Selling by Suppliers can Influence System-wide Information Flow to Benefit Retailers”.  She concluded this study to screen out the structure and information effects of direct selling and to establish the interactions between direct selling and information flow in the system; so as to identify the circumstances in which direct selling by supplier could benefit retailers.

The third speaker was Ms. Xuan Wang (PolyU) and her topic was “Strategic and Economic Implications when a Firm Joins the Sharing Economy”.  Firstly, she introduced traditional sharing economy. The she mentioned her model for product sharing with Firm’s involvement.  She concluded that when the firm could strategically decide the product quality, it would increase the product quality when it joins the sharing market.

The fourth speaker was Ms. Xiaozhou He (Dongbei University of Finance and Economics) and her presentation was “A Survey on the Consumer Characteristics of Food Delivery under O2O e-Commerce”. She analyzed delivery times and order price in different cities.  Her exploratory research findings included respondents’ favorite promotion activities were completely independent of other factors; the price per order was related to monthly income and marital status.

I presented certificates to all speakers.

I was the last speaker in this session and my topic entitled “Preliminary Study on QMS based Innovation Management System with Extension Innovation Methodology”.

In the beginning, I introduced ISO 9001:2015 QMS standard and ISO/FDIS 56002 Innovation Management System (InnoMS). Then I discussed how to integrate both standard under ISO High Level Structure (HLS).

And then I introduced Extension Innovation Method (METS) for implementation of QMS based InnoMS.  Basic theory of Extenics were introduced too.

Dr. KS Chin presented a certificate to me.

In parallel session II, Prof. Xin Shi (Reader in Applied Statistics, Faculty Lead for China at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School) chaired the session named “Big Data & Blockchain”.

The first speaker in session II was Ms. Juan Liu (Dongbei University of Finance and Economics) and her topic entitled “An Assessment of the Business Environment in Northeast China Based on Text Mining”.  She concluded that the combination of social issues, such as Business Environment and Big Data was future research hotspot.

The second speaker in session II was Mr. HaoRan Wu (Nanjing University) and his topic named “Testing Adequacy of Smart Contracts on Blockchain”.  He focused on the programmable part of the blockchain, the smart contract. Blockchain is a decentralized and distributed database. It is decentralization, transparency, autonomy, untouchable modification and anonymity.  Finally, Mr. Wu believed that these mutation operators could help tester to discover potential errors in smart contracts and write more adequacy test cases to ensure the security of blockchain applications.

The last speaker was Ms. Licai Lei (Xiangtan University) and her presentation was “Research on the Impact of User’s Social Support Perception on Exercise Behaviours in Social Network”.  She used WeRun as example that user could follow the account to see real-time walking data about themselves and their friends, and they could give their friends a thumb-up through a “step ranking”.

After the session II, Dr. KS Chin and I took a photo with Prof. Xin Shi.

Finalized the day 1 of IRC-SEMS2019, we joined a gala dinner.  Firstly, Prof. Jing Zhou gave a welcome remark.

Then Prof. Kwok L Tsui thanked all staff for their contribution to the conference.

Many research students and supervisors joined the dinner.

At the end, all research students under Dr. KS Chin supervision were took a group photo for memory.
