HKIE Seminar on Smart Manufacturing – How to use digitalization management to improve productivity?

The Manufacturing and Industrial (MI) Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), IETHK – MIE Section and ISE Dept., PolyU co-organized Seminar named “Smart Manufacturing – How to use digitalization management to improve productivity” on 7th Sep 2019.  Smart Manufacturing has been defined as the fully-integrated, collaborative manufacturing system that respond in real time to meet changing demands and conditions in the factory, in the supply network and in customer needs.  The seminar aimed to sharing speakers experience and knowhow to improve productivity through digitalization management.  I met many friends and took a photo for memory. (Left: Mr. Paul Li (BUD Project Coordinator, HKSTLA), Dr. Luk Chi-fai (Director, WSI Group HK) and I)

In the beginning, Dr. Eric Liu (DED, VTC) represented HKIE to give welcome speech and introduced each guest speakers and co-organizers.  He said digitalization was important in Industry Engineering and System Engineering.

The first guest speaker was Dr. Andrew Yan (Production Director, Wing King Tong Holdings Ltd.) and his topic named “New Inspection Optimization Process Technology for Printing Industry”.  He said this topic was part of his PolyU EngD thesis.

Then he briefed the domain knowledge for systems engineering that all related data.

And then Dr. Yan introduced printing industry background and current methodology such as Trail by Error that was very passive!  They required a skilled operator, subjective colour judgement and inconsistent results.  Therefore, Dr. Yan studied the “Prospective Intelligent Control Method and Device for Fluid Printing Colour Film” and got the patent.

After that he demonstrated the new hardware design and it installed into the printing machine.  He employed AI closed loop system and automatic sampling algorithm and achieved 16 sigma!

Finally, Dr. Yan concluded the impact to industry on i4.0 based on the views of Man, Machine, Method and Material.

The second speaker was Mr. Robert Yan (Founding Partner, Rocket Data Technology) and his topic entitled “How to use Edge Computing and AI technologies in manufacturing to improve efficiency”.  Mr. Robert Yan had family ran plastics factory and he employed digitalization management successfully.  Then he shared his experience and formed a company to service other industries such as Food & Packaging and PCB.

Then he shared a fully automated data handling with no human involved on data collecting process in their plastic factory.

And then he named the current practice in connecting machines controller into one platform as “Data Robot”. His basic i4.0 solution was only purchased one edge computing device to connect all machines data and then use of AI in production planning and factory scheduling.

Finally, he compared using Data AI and Traditional SAP.  The efficiency enhanced the flexibility manufacturing.  Now he was able to receive many different type orders and small quantity with high profit margin.

The last speaker was Dr. Lam Fuk Ming, Anthony (Engineering and Product Integrity Manager, Asia Pacific, Hallmark Cards (HK) Limited) and his presentation named “Improving Productivity by Way of Autonomous Digital Connectivity: An Empirical Study of Print Media Industry in China”.  Firstly, Dr. Lam shared difficulties in the printing industry such as high operating cost.

Then he introduced the ideal universal standardized print management system under digital connectivity.  Then Dr. Lam said the industry used ISO 51 & 52 fogra as communication standards. And then no need to print sample for order.

After that Dr. Lam mentioned Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and to minimize / eliminate the six big losses.

He summarized the data analytics in the following table. Finally, he concluded the quality reproduction included repeatable, predictable and sustainable that reduced cost and enhanced benefits.  He also said i4.0 needed data scientists and process engineers.

Lastly, all guests were invited for discussion forum.

At the end, organizer presented souvenir and group photo with guest speakers.
