HKSQxEngDS Webinar - Decision Quality enhancement by using Transformation Bridge on Anti-Epidemic Strategies

The Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and CityU EngD Society co-organized a webinar on “運用轉換橋分析「動態清零」和「與病毒共存」的矛盾問題及提升決策質量的初探” on 23rd March 2022. The webinar aimed to introduce four key elements of decision quality and using transformation bridge to propose solution between “Dynamic Zero” and “Coexistence with Virus” so as to enhance decision quality.

In the beginning, HKSQ and CityU EngD program were introduced. Then the recently Omicron infection situation in Hong Kong was briefed.  And then four key elements of decision quality including Moral Intensity, Information Quality, Group Cohesiveness and Decision Experience were discussed and a poll to survey which element is most important for decision quality is performed. The top one is Information Quality (65%).

After that Extenics, Extension Model and Transformation Bridge were briefed. Extenics is an original China New Science for studying the possibility of extending things and rules and methodology of developing innovation with formalized patterns to resolving contradictory problem. Transformation bridge is used to solve antithetical problem and come out “win-win” solution through transformation of goals or transformation of condition limit.

And then extension model was employed to describe “Dynamic Zero” and “Coexistence with Virus”, as well as, anti-epidemic condition limit.

Using the implication and correlation analysis, all measures relationship were draw visually and analyzed their relationship of impact.

Finally, we found the common subordinal goal under implying passages that were to increase effective medicine and vaccination rates.  It could also consider to use transforming passage to transform the condition limit to be acceptable level for changing strategy from “Dynamic Zero” to “Coexistence with Virus”.

Lastly, anti-epidemic policy cycle diagram was proposed and concluded that "First zero, then coexistence, and then zero, after that coexistence".

At the end, a poll for which policies are better and results were anti-epidemic policy cycle diagram (59%), coexistence with virus (17%), dynamic zero (12%), others (12%).

Q&A
Wilson Lam proposed to divide Hong Kong into three parts (HK island, Kowloon and N.T.) for dynamic zero.  Stephen Au said four elements of decision quality are very good not only for this topic but also employed in corporate decisions.

HKSQ Webinar on A Framework of Use for QFD

The Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) organized a webinar on “A Framework of Use for QFD” on 19th March 2022. The webinar aimed to introduce a framework for addressing the issue of “use” in a more holistic manner so that QFD teams could draw up well-thought-out plans to collect data and customer/user voices when making projects with product and service development. Dr. Catherine Y.P. Chan was the guest speaker and she is president of Hong Kong QFD Association and also HKSQ exco member, as well as, 2019 Akao Prize®Recipient.

Firstly, Dr. Catherine Chan briefed the importance of comprehensiveness of need list and introduced two fundamental steps for operating the interpretation deployment of QFD as i) Draw up the list of explored needs and ii) Find out the importance of the explored needs.
Then she identified the need list through user, co-user and non-user.

And then Dr. Chan proposed the framework of QFD included four level and they are Product, Market, Society and Globe.

After that she explained each level in details and major forms of voice of collect using Observation and Listening. Some companies would use free web forum and mounted video recording that ensure to quantity of data and efficiency of collection.  However, dialoguing with customers could ensure the quality of data and effectiveness of collection.

For society level, she mentioned to manage Co-User and introduced two major forms of Co-User that are sequential form (e.g. Bike sharing) and simultaneous form (e.g. Urban rail).

Finally, Dr. Chan discussed views of product level to market level to society level and then to globe level. She explained the manufacturer-customer relationship that supply chain and consumption chain joined in a loop like circular economy. Lastly, Dr. Catherine Chan concluded that four aspects of the framework were not independent but intertwined.

CAiRS Lecture – Reliability and Safety Analysis using Digital Twins

The Centre for Advances in Reliability and Safety (CAiRS) organized a webinar named “Reliability and Safety Analysis using Digital Twins” on 9th March 2022.  The speaker were Mr. Varun Khemani and Dr. Michael H. Azarian.

In the beginning, Dr. Michael H. Azarian introduced what is Digital Twins. He said digital twins approach could help in asset management and maintenance optimization through fault diagnosis and fault prognosis of the various faults of the asset to ensure its safety and reliability.

Mr. Varun Khemani continued to discuss the digital twin for rotating machinery, batteries, and circuits including their failure modes and mechanisms.

After demonstrated some cases, he mentioned traditional digital twin depended on simulations to approximate the system, but it is not possible to simulate complex system. So he proposed the Deep Digital Twins (DDT) and gave new definitions below.

1.    An implicit physics model of an asset learned from healthy asset data, requiring no explicit physics knowledge.

2.    A digital representation from which sensor values can be sampled under both stationary and non-stationary operational settings such as rotational speed, throttle and load.

3.    A data driven model which does not require any asset specific feature engineering

4.    A probabilistic model which is able to automatically produce a health indicator which is a metric of the deviation from the healthy asset data.

Deep Digital Twins (DDT) framework was proposed afterward.

Finally, he showed some application of DDT such as gearbox and Commercial Modular Aero-Propulsion System Simulation (CMAPSS).  Lastly, Mr. Khemani concluded that digital twins demonstrated for the prediction of remaining useful life, reliability and functional safety for different products. Concept of deep digital twins (DDT) worked with scenarios where digital twin modeling was infeasible.  Reinforcement learning was introduced to digital twin evolving within the system lifetime.
