CityU Popular Science Lecture - Knowledge Beyond Boundaries

CityU celebrated the University Day 2022 that the Office of the Vice-President (Research and Technology) (OVPRT) arranged two online events under the theme “Research and Technology - Beyond Boundaries” on Thursday, 17 March 2022. The first event named “Popular Science Lecture - Knowledge Beyond Boundaries”. The webinar aimed to unfold the latest scientific discoveries and technological innovations in an interesting and easy-to-understanding way, see how cutting-edge research addresses some of the most pressing issues nowadays and contributes to the betterment of society.

Prof. Wang Zuankai (Associate Dean (CENG), College of Engineering, Chair Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, CityU) was the first speaker and his topic entitled “Solving a 266-year-old challenge – Efficient liquid cooling over 1,00oC”. Firstly, Prof. Wang briefed the Leidenfrost effect that a vapor layer formed between the cooling liquid and superhot surface.

Then Prof. Wang introduced Structure Thermal Armor (STA) that could cooling the material from 1000oC to 200oC. Finally, he briefed some applications such as rocket engineer, closed system, etc. Prof. Wang concluded that this research should be interdisciplinary including fluid mechanics, thermal engineering, chemistry, energy physics, materials, manufacturing, … etc.

Dr Yu Xinge (Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, CityU) was the second speakers and his presentation was “Skin & Robotic VR and Metaverse”.  In the beginning, Dr. Yu briefed Metaverse that connected between physical world and virtual world.  The film named “Ready Player One” showed the perfect Metaverse.

Then Dr. Yu introduced the skin-integrated VR system and briefed its development history as well as its applications including soft electronics for tumor targeting, e-skill and sweat sensing.

Prof. Vanessa Barrs (Associate Dean, Director of Veterinary Affairs, Jockey Club of Veterinary Medicine and Life Science, Chair Professor, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, CityU) was the third speaker and her presentation named “Animal to Human Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)”.  Beginning, she briefed the history from SARS-CoV in 2002, to MERS-CoV in 2012 and then to SARS-CoV-2 in 2019.

Then she shared some researches related to domestic cats and dogs infectious cases. Case transmitted by cats or dogs to humans was zero.  Lastly, she concluded some implications of interspecies SARS-CoV-2 transmission included that virus evolution in animal hosts would generate new mutations; potential for recombination between animal and human virus variants; and eradication of SARS-CoV-2 is impossible.

The last speaker was Dr Sean Yuan Hsiang-yu (Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Sciences, CityU) and his topic was “Mathematical modelling & applications in Covid-19”.  Firstly, he briefed the predication model history and quoted W.O. Kernack & A.G. McKendrick (1927) paper “A Contribution to the Mathematical Theory of Epidemics”.

Then he explained mathematical model capabilities such as to predict the actual number of infections, to estimate the effect of interventions and to project the outcomes under different scenarios. Model input included daily cases, daily vaccination and daily mobility, etc. Lastly, Dr. Yuen quoted George E.P.Box statement as conclusion that “All models are wrong but some are useful.”
