CityU International Research Conference on Systems Engineering and Management Science – Day 2

The seventh International Research Conference on Systems Engineering and Management Science (IRC-SEMS2019) took place in Nanjing, China, 19-20 April 2019. IRC-SEMS aims to provide a research platform for academics and researchers, particularly young faculty and graduate students, to share and exchange experience and research findings in various disciplines of Systems Engineering and Management Science. Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM) is organizer.  School of Data Science, CityU and School of Management and Engineering, Nanjing University are co-organizer.  Before the 2^nd day of conference, Dr. KS Chin and I took a photo in front of the Nanjing University International Conference Center (NUICC).

I attended the day 2 of the conference for the session named “Quality and Reliability Engineering”.

The first speaker was Ms. Mei Han (Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics) and her topic entitled “Integrated Parameter and Tolerance Optimization of a Centrifugal Compressor based on a Complex Simulator”. She compared the obtained optimal design with the existing design.  

The second speaker was Ms. Lisha Song (Tianjin University) and her presentation named “Change-point Detection in phase I for Autocorrelated Poisson Profiles”. She proposed a method used the generalized estimating equation (GEE) approach to model the within-profile correlation and then integrates the change-point algorithm with the modified Score test.  

The third speaker was Mr. Xiaolin Wang (CityU) and his topic presentation was “IoT-enabled Innovations in Product Warranty Management”.  He overviewed the IoT-enabled innovations including Customized extended warranty contract design, Predictive maintenance optimization, Claim processing-Fraud detection and Early warning of quality & reliability problems.

The seventh International Research Conference on Systems Engineering and Management Science (IRC-SEMS2019) took place in Nanjing, China, 19-20 April 2019. IRC-SEMS aims to provide a research platform for academics and researchers, particularly young faculty and graduate students, to share and exchange experience and research findings in various disciplines of Systems Engineering and Management Science. Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM) is organizer.  School of Data Science, CityU and School of Management and Engineering, Nanjing University are co-organizer.  We took a group photo in front of the Xingyun Building (星雲樓) for memory.

In the beginning, Prof. Shen Houcai (Professor, School of Mgt & Eng, Nanjing University) chair the morning section. 

Prof. Jing Zhou (Dean and Professor, School of Management and Engineering, Nanjing University) gave welcome speech and she introduced the history of Nanjing city and also their school which was one of youngest schools at Nanjing University.  

Prof. Kwok L Tsui (Chair Professor, School of Data Science, CityU) gave welcome speech and he brief IRC-SEMS background and introduced three keynote speakers.

Prof. Chuangyin Dang (Acting Head and Professor, SEEM Dept., CityU) gave welcome speech and he welcome all participants and believed that the young faculty and students could develop their skills and build a strong international network through this significant conference.

The first keynote speaker was Prof. Jim Dai (Presidential Chair Professor, Institute for Data and Decision Analytics (iDDA), The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen; Leon C. Welch Professor of Engineering, School of Operations Research and Information Engineering, Cornell University) and his presentation topic entitled “Hospital Inpatient Operations: Modeling, Analysis and Optimizations”.  He introduced fidelity modeling to capture time-of-day patient waiting time (descriptive analysis): service-time models and trading off waiting & overflow (prescriptive analysis) through bed overflow decisions.  

Academic Exchanging with the School of Management and Engineering, Nanjing University

Before the seventh International Research Conference on Systems Engineering and Management Science (IRC-SEMS2019), Dr. KS Chin (Associate Professor, SEEM Dept., CityU) and Prof. Shen Houcai (沈厚才) (Professor, School of Mgt & Eng, Nanjing University) arranged an academic exchanging seminar for both research students.  

Firstly, CityU research student introduced themselves and one of them from Africa.  

Then Prof. Shen led his PhD students to introduce themselves too.

Visit to Zhongshan Mausoleum (中山陵)

On 18^th April 2019, we planned to visit the Zhongshan Mausoleum (中山陵) before exchanging meeting in Nanjing University.  Actually, we had arrived Zhongshan Mausoleum on 16^th April but we cannot entry without online booking!

Following the road, I saw a food shop named “Huiwei” it is only one character different from “Huawei”!

The special snack was sold.  We brought some because of child memory.

The map was Zhongshan Mountain National Park.

A large entry building and we had long road to arrive the mausoleum.

Many trees planted in both side of the road.

I arrived the first building with the brand “天下為公” (the world community is equally shared by all).

Visit to the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders and the Confucius Temple

On 17^th April 2019, we planned to visit the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders (侵华日军南京大屠杀遇难同胞纪念馆) and the Confucius Temple (南京夫子庙).  I went out the campus and found the poster named “Salute to Mr. Lu Xun!”

The building named Xingyun Building (星雲樓).

Master Xingyun (星雲大師) sculpture was found inside the building. My mother like to follow him for Buddhism.

In this time, I passed the College of Chemistry and Chemical Industry.

IET Manufacturing Forum 2019 – HK Manufacturing Industries in Greater Bay Area

The Manufacturing Forum 2019 named “HK Manufacturing Industries in Greater Bay Area” was co-organized by IET Hong Kong and ISE Dept., PolyU and PolyU MILESAA on 13 April 2019.  Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) was one of supporting organizations. In the beginning, Ir. William Wan (Chairman, IET Hong Kong) gave a welcome speech.

Ir. Dr. Lo Wai Kwok (Member of Legco, HKSAR) was the first speaker and his topic entitled “How can achieve the goals of Framework Agreement on Deepening Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Cooperation in the Development of the Bay Area”.  Firstly, Dr. Lo briefed the opportunities of GBA and reminded us to leverage our advantages under one country two system, and applied into the policies of one belt one road and GBA.

Then Dr. Lo analyzed the potential of GBA and compared with other areas.  He said our competition in the world that was not city vs city but city cluster vs city cluster.

And then Dr. Lo mentioned the key milestone was on 1^st Jul 2017 that President Xi Jinping Saturday attended the signing ceremony of the framework agreement on the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.  Until 18^th Feb 2019, Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was issued. There are five key directions in GBA and they are high level planning, development platform, innovation system, collaboration establishment and sharing connectivity.  

The key target and strategies of the outline were showed in the following diagram.

After that Dr. Lo briefed some measures which established for supporting Hong Kong people servicing in GBA.  Many people concerned the tax arrangement about the limit of 183 day.  He said the day did not count if not over 24hr.  For example, you work from Monday and back from Friday, it counted 3 day stayed in China.

Completion of HKSQ financial report

After collecting all HKSQ directors’ signature for financial report, Dr. Jane Wong, Mr. Ricky Suen and I went to HKSQ accountant to submit all documentation and claim form for completion of financial report 2017/2018 and started the financial report 2018/2019.

I appreciated all HKSQ exco & coopt members effort and especially for Mr. CP Chow past contributions on this activities.

HKPC Industry 4.0 Implementation Workshop – Strategic Focus and Steps

Industry 4.0 Implementation Workshop Series was organized by Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) on 18^th Mar, 1^st & 12^th Apr 2019.  Mr. Patrick Kabasci (Technology Management, Fraunhofer IPT, KEX Knowledge Exchange AG) was our trainer.  Three workshops included “Industry 4.0 market and technological trends analysis, practical tools and technology”, “Industry 4.0 technical contents of pilot project” and “Industry 4.0 technical contents of pilot project” and “Industry 4.0 implementation strategic focus and steps”.  I missed the first workshop and would attend the second and third one.  I summarized the last workshop for sharing. In the beginning, Mr. Luker Tsoi (Consultant, Industry 4.0, HKPC) introduced FITMI and they approved SME Development Fund for Industry 4.0 for SMEs in Hong Kong.

Mr. Patrick Kabasci (Technology Management, Fraunhofer IPT, KEX Knowledge Exchange AG) was today’s trainer and his topic was Industry 4.0 Strategy.

Firstly, he briefed the framework of the digit transformation that included 1) Vision & Strategy,  2) Culture & Leadership, 3) Organizational Structure, 4) Governance & Control, 5) Capabilities, and 6) Partnership & External Stakeholders.
