I was honor to be one of advisors of the Extenics Popular Science Video for Primary School Students (可拓学科普微视频-可可拓拓版) which produced by Extenics Society, Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) (中國人工智能學會可拓學專業委員會) and Research Institute of Extenics and Innovation Methods, GDUT (廣東工業大學可拓學與創新方法研究所).  The video published in WeChat on 18^th May 2020.

VPET International Conference 2020

The Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) International Conference 2020 is a worldwide gathering for VPET leaders, policymakers, academics, industry representatives and practitioners and was held on 15^th May 2020 online. Themed "Skilling for the Future", the Conference address prominent issues in VPET head on, share best practices and tactics for advancing VPET and skills development for a new era. 

In the beginning, Mr. Kevin Yeung Yun Hung (Secretary for Education, Education Bureau, HKSAR) gave an opening keynote.

The first keynote speaker was Mr. Olli-Pekka Heinonen (Director General, Finnish National Agency for Education, Finland) and is topic named “Six Seismic Shifts in VPET”.  He mentioned six seismic shifts as follows.

i)                    Education System to Learning System

ii)                  Mass Education to Personalized Learning

iii)                Individual Professionalism to Shared and Dynamic Professionalism

iv)                Recruitment-based HR to Learning Organizations

v)                  Fixed Mindset to Growth Mindset

vi)                Map to Compass

Lastly, he introduced the new vocational education and training roadmap.

The second keynote speaker was Prof. Sir Chris Husbands (Vice-Chancellor, Sheffield Hallam University) and his topic entitled “Making Vocational Education Work in a Changing World”.  Firstly, he quoted Andreas Schleicher (OECD) statement to explain the strategic challenge for twenty-first century economies. The statement is “You have two choices. You can go into the race to the bottom, lowering wages for low-skill jobs. Or you can try to win in innovation and competitiveness. In the long run, if you don’t have natural resources to sell, skills are the only way of competing.”

Because work is changing faster than education.  Prof. Chris Husbands proposed four practice steps to gear education systems below:

i)                    Put the individual learner at the centre

ii)                  Create multiple ‘pathways to prosperity’

iii)                Build connections between governments, employers and education institutions

iv)                Ensure that accountability measures drive flexibilities

Finally, Prof. Chris Husbands discussed seven conditions for success VPET.

i)                    Understand that the future economy will be different

ii)                  Recognize that basic skills are essential

iii)                Co-design learning between employers and educational institutions

iv)                Flexibilities are required on all sides with strong partnerships, especially for small employers

v)                  Make mistakes and learn from them

vi)                Experience is not learning. Learning in the workplace needs to be actively planned and managed.

vii)              Put learners at the centre

IAQ Zoom Meeting 2020

Since the world is under coronavirus spreading period, International Academy for Quality (IAQ) arranged an online meeting on 7^th May 2020. In Hong Kong time zone, the meeting was held from 9:00pm to 12:00pm.  It is the first time we meet through online and the meeting had 60 academicians participated.  It breaks the record of IAQ meeting so far. 

Prof. Fugee Tsung, Dr. KS Chin and I from Hong Kong participated the meeting.

HKSQ Quality Professional visit to ActiveCareGroup Surgery Face Mask Production Line

Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman, HKSQ) and I (Chairman, HKSQ) were honor to be invited by Mr. Peter Suen (Pharmacist & Owner, ACP ActiveCareGroup (明心医疗集团)) to visit ActiveCareGroup Surgery Face Mask Production Line in Fo Tan on 1^st May 2020 for solving some quality and production problems.   We took a group photo in front of the face mask production line.

Then we started to understand the problems they met and discussed the operation principles and setting issues.

The cutting and binding of nose wire were discussed and Aaron provided some adjustment suggestions.

And then we discussed the sensor problems.

Dr. Aaron Tong would form a team to help Mr. Peter Suen to solve the production and quality problems in coming week.  We are looking forward to hear the good news and hope the mask production line worked smoothly for providing good quality face mask for elders.

After that we had lunch together.  HKSQ invited ActiveCareGroup to be our corporate member.

HKSQ Official Bearers Meeting and Online Exco Trial Meeting

HKSQ Official Bearers Meeting was held for future direction and completion of financial issue for 2019/2020 on 30 April 2020.  Moreover, we planned to perform Online HKSQ Exco Meeting in coming months using Zoom.  HKSQ Official Bearers included Chairman, Vice-chairman, Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer. We only four people complied HK Government restriction regulation for gathering under corona-virus spreading period.

Tonight, we used Zoom for HKSQ Exco Trial Meeting and it was successfully for 10 members attended the meeting. We would like to perform our next exco meeting online using Zoom.

CityU Study and Scholarship Forum on “Interdisciplinary and Innovative Exploration” 「求學與治學」講壇之第二講：「漫談學科交叉與創新探索」

I attended the online forum named “Interdisciplinary and Innovative Exploration” arranged by Office of the Provost, City University of Hong Kong on 29^th April 2020.  Prof. Jian Lu (呂堅) is the keynote and he introduced his study and research life as well as how to explore innovatively through interaction among interdisciplinary fields.  

Prof. Lu used 360 degree monitor to perform this forum. (There are 359 online participants I checked before the end of forum!)

In the beginning, he quoted leader of China and USA that both have already focused on Innovation.

Then he mentioned Mr. Qian Xuesen(錢學森) view on natural science come from foundation science, technology science and engineering.  He used Mr. Qian’s question to start the forum that is “Why our universities haven’t cultivated outstanding talent?” 

After then Prof. Lu introduced his view on “Original Innovation”. There are three level below:

Level 1: New idea and realization; (0 to 1)

Level 2: New method and enhancement based on level 1; (1 to 10)

Level 3: Found the technology realization solution based on level 1 & 2. (10 to 100)

We do better on Level 2 but not in Level 1 and 3.

Prof. Lu replied to Mr. Qian Xuesen’s question that the key elements of self-innovation are Uniqueness (唯一性), Destructive (顛覆性) and Optimization (最佳性).

And then Prof. Lu stated USA manufacturing plan on 5 key elements and they were Design, Material, Mass 3D Printing, Craftsmanship and Value Chain.

Finally, Prof. Lu introduced his research team’s different recent research topics.

He proposed that Theorist / Modeling Expert and Experimentalist should be cooperated and communicated.   

At the end, he quoted Ferry Porsche statement “In the beginning, I looked around and could not quite find the car I dreamed of.  So I decided to build it myself.” to explain the revolution innovation needs insight, curiosity, confidence and consistence, opportunity and luck.   He said basic knowledge could be come from university but you also need lifelong study from different sources.  

During Q&A, Prof. Lu mentioned the future development of CityU would include Matter (Hard Matter and Soft Matter) and Brain research.  Some post-doc students asked how to select the research topics.  He replied that he would ask his student “What do you want to do after graduate?”  If student would like to do research, he would select some fundamental research.  If student would like to go into industry or startup, he would select some researches topic related to industry.
