Farewell dinner with Bruce and Fung in HKSTP

I was honor to be invited by old Technology Support Centre (TSC) colleagues to attend the farewell dinner with Bruce and Fung. We took a group photo with almost the whole TSC team for memory. 

I took a photo with Fung and Bruce tables to record our happiness time. I also bring XO brandy to farewell them but most of colleagues drinking beer and oriange juice! Moreover, I also prepared gifts (my book named “Extenics: Logic of Innovation”) for my old colleagues.

Originally, TSC establishing different Services in Laboratories / Centres since 2002 including

But now, almost all laboratories had been closed except biotechnology one and renamed to Biomedical Technology Support Centre (BioTSC). It is pity that no more semiconductor laboratories and services in HKSTP. The whole IC support chain in the past was showed as follow diagram.

ASQ Fellows Worldwide Open Forum 2022

The ASQ Fellows Worldwide Open Forum 2022 was organized by ASQ Fellows Focus Group leadership team on 17^th Nov 2022 at 4:00pm Central Time (US and Canada) that is equal to 18^th Nov 2022 at 6:00am HKT via Zoom. This virtual event briefly shared the ASQ Fellows Focus Group's vision and various activities. Moreover, ASQ Fellows can exchange ideas and leverage our collective strengths as a community of thought-leaders to grow and serve the Society. Dr. Aaron Tong and I attended the forum. I capture a group photo for memory.

In the beginning, Mr. Don Brecken (Chair, ASQ Fellows Focus Group) gave welcome remark to all participants.

Then he introduced the ASQ Fellows Focus Group that provide fellows with opportunities to engage ASQ communities including coaches, mentors, authors, etc.

And then Mr. Don Brecken introduced the members of ASQ Fellows Focus Group Leadership Team. After that we started our discussion. Steven Schuelka was MC and Ron was the first fellow to share his view and then followed by Stephen Hacker. Many fellows shared their views including values of ASQ member and fellow, certificate value, more adv for ASQ for employment and retainment of members, reshape membership to business side, train people including hospital and police dept sectors, improving knowledge, mentorship program, … etc.

Lastly, I was invited by Mr. Rajeev Chadha to give some opinions. I said HKSQ also faced members reduction and difficult to identify the value to members. After 6 six sigma and lead, no new wave of quality had high impact to society and community. Eventhough we discussed Quality 4.0 but people only focused on Industry 4.0 and though Quality 4.0 is by-product. I suggested to influence government and increase impact through government policy.

The Hong Kong Precious Metals Assay Centre Steering Committee Meeting 2022

 I was honor to be invited again as member of Hong Kong Precious Metals Assay Centre (HKPMAC) Steering Committee in this year. I served HKPMAC to give opinions on Quality Assurance in Laboratory under "Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme" since 2015.  HKPMAC is an independent testing laboratory that established in 2010 by The Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society (CGSE). This is the third year we had zoom meeting under the Covid pandemic period.

The HKPMAC Steering Committee member list was found in CGSE website under ‘Corporate Structure’.

Kathy Fu(HKPMAC Lab Manager) reported the status of accredition in the past year and Mr Brian Fung (CGSE-CEO) gave comments. We had also discussed the new development of the centre such as new version of ISO standard and inhouse calibration for equipment, etc. I captured a group photo at the end of meeting.

Remark: I met Dr. Haywood Cheung (President, The Chinese Gold & Silver Exchange Society) last night for the 6^th & 7^th CityU Distinguished Alumni Award Presentation Ceremony. Moreover, Dr. Haywood Cheung is the 5th Distinguished Alumni Awardee in 2018.

The 6th & 7th CityU Distinguished Alumni Award Presentation Ceremony

The 6th & 7th CityU Distinguished Alumni Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 14^th Nov 2022 in the Langham Hotel. We, CityU Eminence Society and CityU Engineering Doctorate Society, are pleasure to join this ceremony for celebrating our distinguished alumni awardees Mr. Simon HUI and Dr. Sunny CHAI.  I am honor to be invited by Dr. Sunny CHAI and on behalf of CityU EngD Society to attend the ceremony. In the beginning, I took a photo with two awardees for memory.

It is a long time without attending such grand event after Covid pandemic, I met many old friends and took some photos for memory such happy moment.

Dr Chung Shui-ming (Pro-Chancellor, CityU, Chairman of Judge Panel) gave speech and thanks for all judge members.

I met Prof. Raymond Hon-Fu Chan (Vice-President (Student Affairs)) and he always invited me for science student mentorship.

During the dinner, alumni congratulations messages were showed. Dr. Raymond Leung, Dr. Rocky Lam and I gave congratulations to both awardees.

Moreover, I thanked Dr. Sunny Chai for his support to startup especially on the HKSQ TID funded project for developing good practice guideline of quality startup.

Finally, Dr. Sunny Chai together with Mr. Ricky Wong gave a toast to us.

When I left, I met Ms. Cindy Kuan and I surprised she had read my Martial Art Novel entitled "Quality Alchemist - ISO scroll" online in my blog which had published since 2006. Dr John S.K. Lo (Founding Chairman, HKQAA) was her master, so we had common friend that Dr. John Lo was VP – marketing in Science Park when I served in HKSTP. At the end, I gave my new book named “The Logic of Innovation: Extenics” to her as a gift.

HKSQ Seminar on Design Methodology in Automated Parking System for Smart City Development

HKSQ and TQM co-organized seminar on “Design Methodology in Automated Parking System (APS) for Smart City Development” on 11^th Nov 2022. CityU EngD Society and Hong Kong Chinese Institute of Engineers (HKCIE) were supporting organizations. Car parking is one of the key issues in most major cities like Hong Kong. With the aim to optimize spatial efficiency and innovative solution, Automated Parking System (APS) is one of the better solutions to provide more parking lots in limited spaces. This seminar aims to introduce APS and sharing some cases in different major cities included Hong Kong and Singapore. Group photo was taken for memory this onsite seminar. 

Mr. Peter Fung (Former Chairman, HKSQ) was our guest speaker and he shared the background of parking challenges in major cities.

Then he used lean approach to brief wastes in conventional car park including Ramps, Reservoir space for turning and Elevators, stairways and other means of exits. And then he mentioned APS solution in semi and fully automated design for removing those wastes.

After that Mr. Peter Fung shared some case studies and the first one was Hansen Mansion in Shenzhen which is an integrated complex (office, shopping mail and hotel). APS employed underground that minimum ground area occupied. The second case was 18 Robinson in Singapore which was a high-rise office building. That employed APS in the car park using Automatic Guided Vehicle (AGV) parking technology.

Finally, he shared some survey results in Hong Kong to get voice of customer and the top advantage is to reduce the waiting time or finding time for parking space.

Q&A session

Peter introduced Hong Kong regulation related to Mechanized Vehicle Parking System (MVPS) under EMSD in Hong Kong Government at https://www.emsd.gov.hk/en/lifts_and_escalators_safety/aps_mvps_ddcp/mvps/index.html. He said the most difficulties were documentation and approval of standards’ requirements. (Because HK is new runner and only reference different countries standards.)

One practical trial in HKSTP was employed by his company.

PolyU ISE Lecture for Experience Sharing

The last lecture of “ISE 549 - Management of Innovation and Technology” under the MSc in Knowledge and Technology Management in PolyU that Dr. YC Chau and I taught for this year was held on 10^th Nov 2022. We invited Dr. Vincent Fung to share his experience, smart manufacturing and startup industry. We took a group photo for memory. 

Dr. YC Chau shared his 40 years’ experience in the international manufacturing career from Apprentice to VP.

His career path demonstrated the life long learning and his research is focused on organization learning.

Then I shared my experience from student to adjunct professor. I quoted Steve Job statement that “You can't connect the dots looking forward you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.”

And the I explained different professional status I got in the field of quality and engineering.

After that I connected all my dots into one page to demonstrate all our experience are correlated to each other.

Dr. Vincent Fung is the last speaker to share his experience and guest talk for reindustrialization and startup entrepreneurship.

Firstly, he shared his career cycle and life-long learning is his key success factor. 

During the transformation of manufacturing experience sharing, he compared the traditional manufacturing and smart manufacturing. Some success cases were shared.

Finally, he shared four successful factors of startup including Team Formation, Ideas/Technology used in the product, Partner – NPI, and Business Model/Market.
