ESG Seminar – How to Control the Bargaining Table

The Executive Study Group (ESG) seminar 2016 – Leadership Strategy series named How to Control the Bargaining Table to Build Your Influential Power was held by the ESG, Asia Pacific Institute for Strategy Limited (APIFS) and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corp (HKSTPC) on 30 Aug 2016.  I would like to summarize the seminar for sharing below. (The seminar is full!)


Dr. Mark Lee briefed the purpose of Executive Study Group (ESG) and he established 100 CEOs Peer Learning Group.  He told us the coming topics in the CEO Group included “Downturn Strategy”, “Design & Innovation Strategy”, “Re-Branding and Marketing”, “Alliance and Plug-and-Play Strategy” and “Organization Development Strategy”.  He then also quoted Steve Jobs statement that Creativity is just connecting things.

HKQAA & The People’s Government of Xinhui District Visit to HKSTP

We were honor that HKQAA arranged The People’s Government of Xinhui District, Jiangmen City (江門市新會區人民政府) to visit HKSTP Incubation Program and Laboratories on 29 Aug 2016. Ms. Fanny Li and Mr. Nic Chan (HKQAA) led this trip to HKSTP.  In the beginning, Mr. Antony Chan briefed the background of HKSTP and our Incubation Programme services.  They were impressed that our incubation soft part support and achievement.  


And then I led them to visit our Technology Support Centre (TSC). Firstly, I briefed the Wireless Communications Test Laboratory and Reliability Laboratory.  Secondly, we visited the Material Analysis Laboratory.  Finally, we went to Probe and Test Development Centre to see the operation through the window of cleanroom.  We took a photo in the laboratory together.

HKSQ Seminar on Future Manufacturing

The HKSQ seminar named “Future Manufacturing – Industry 4.0, Made in China 2025 and Internet+” co-organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and SEEM Dept., CityU on 27th Aug 2016.  Industry 4.0, Made in China 2025 and Internet+ are the trend of future manufacturing.  Dr. YC Chau was invited to share his view on those elements and update after HKIE seminar on Industry 4.0 held one year ago.  Before the seminar, I (HKSQ) took a photo with my old friend Ir. Dr. YC Chau and Dr. CF Luk.


Dr. KS Chin represented SEEM Dept., CityU to give welcome speech.  Dr. Chin encouraged industrial professionals could study for research degree like Dr. YC Chau.

HKSTP APAC Innovation Summit 2016 Series – Sensors

The APAC Innovation Summit series was a flagship innovation conference of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTPC) and the topic entitled “Sensors” was held on 25 August 2016.  APAC Innovation Summit (“AIS” in short and formerly known as InnoAsia) aimed to provide an exchange platform on the trend of specific technology sectors.  In the beginning, Dr. HL Yiu (Head of Electronic Cluster, HKSTP) gave a welcome speech and he pointed out that sensor played an important role in different field under smart city and robotic.  He hope todays keynotes would give some insight for all participants.


The first speaker was Prof. William C. Tang (University of California, Irvine) and his topic entitled “Micro-electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Technology and Applications”.  Firstly, he reviewed IEEE publication from 1995 to 2015.  He observed that the publication in Circuits decreased in percentage and Sensors increased as much as Circuits in 2015.  Then he briefed the MEMS advantages included Integration, Miniaturization and Batch Fabrication.   It included Anisotropic Wet Etching of Silicon, Surface Micromachining, Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE), TI Digital Light Processor and Accelerometer.

Three Hundred Engineers Gathering to support Ir. Dr. Lo Wai Kwok

I was honour to be invited to attend the Engineers Gathering for Ir. Dr. Lo Wai Kwok election kickoff meeting of 2016 Legislative Council Election Functional Consitituency (Engineering) on 20th August 2016.  I knew Dr. WK Lo through Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman, HKSQ) and my first impression was in TQM’s leaflet about their photo for achieving HKIA Quality and Productivity Awards.  I joined Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) since 1997.  I found that Ir. Dr. WK Lo was our founding member and the Chairman’s report (1992/1993) had congratulation statement “Congratulations to our past Committee member, Mr. W.K. Lo for his double achievements in last year - the Young Industrialist Award and the Outstanding Young Person of 1992.”  I took photo with Dr. Lo in the beginning of the gathering for memory.

Open Forum – Innovators meets Entrepreneurs

The Open Forum named “From Digital Leadership to Re-Industrialization: Innovators meets Entrepreneurs” organized by Department of Computing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 20th August 2016.  The City University of Hong Kong Engineering Doctorate Society (CityU EngD Society) was one of supporting organization.  This open forum aimed to invite speakers from the government, industry and academic to discuss the trend, direction, experience and cases on how digital leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs contributed toward the processes of re-industrialization.  In the beginning, Dr. Walter Fung as forum coordinator introduced the forum arrangement and topics.

Cyberport Smart-Clinic Seminar on HKQAA Startups Registration Scheme

After our last visited Cyberport on 15 Jun 2016, HKQAA and Cyberport organized the Smart-Clinic Seminar named “How to Gain Business Partners’ Trust by using Management Tools”.  We would like to introduce the scheme named “HKQAA Hong Kong Registration - Start-ups”.  I was invited by HKQAA to give a talk together.  Before the seminar, Mr. Nic Chan (Account Manager, HKQAA), Mr. Nathan Liu (Smart-Space Community Manager, Cyberport) and I took a photo for memory.

HKSQ AGM 2016 and QFD Seminar

A seminar named “You cannot design tomorrow's products using yesterday's QFD” was organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) after the 27th HKSQ Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 12 Aug 2016.  I would like to share both HKSQ AGM 2016 and Seminar below.


Mr. Peter Fung (Chairman, HKSQ) held the meeting and briefed the Chairman report to all members.  Until now, HKSQ has 366 individual members, 4 student members and 13 corporate members (by invitation only).  Then Peter briefed HKSQ activities in 2015/2016 including study mission to Purzer Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Taipei, technical visit, international networking and student project competition in LSG Sky Chefs.

After that our Hon. Treasurer Mr. Karson Chui presented HKSQ financial status in the official report and unaudited report. 

Ms. Minda Chiang (Hon. Secretary) reported all participants tonight and AGM agenda.  The nominations of Office Bearers in 2016/2017 were shown below.

After that the AGM seminar guest speaker was Dr. Catherine Chan and his topic named “You cannot design tomorrow's products using yesterday's QFD”.  Firstly, she introduced the new QFD standard ISO 163555.


The 15th Annual Meeting of the Extenics (全國第15屆可拓學年會) – Day 2

The 15th Annual Meeting of the Extenics (全國第15屆可拓學年會) was organized by Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) (中國人工智能學會), undertook by CAAI Extenics Professional Committee (中國人工智能學會可拓學專業委員會) and Ningbo Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University (NITZU) (浙江大學寧波理工學院) form 10 to 12 Aug 2016.  The Day 2 of the meeting was on 12 Aug 2016. The morning session was parallel sessions.  One part was to continue the Level 2 examination and the other part was Extenics research reporting. 


Mr. Yin Hanfan (鄞漢藩) (General Secretary, SZIPS) also presented the Four Steps of Extensive Innovation.

The 15th Annual Meeting of the Extenics (全國第15屆可拓學年會) was organized by Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) (中國人工智能學會), undertook by CAAI Extenics Professional Committee (中國人工智能學會可拓學專業委員會) and Ningbo Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University (NITZU) (浙江大學寧波理工學院) form 10 to 12 Aug 2016.  The opening of the meeting was on 11 Aug 2016 (Day 1).  Dr. Aaron Tong and I represented Hong Kong team to take a photo with Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文) for memory.

Pre-Extenics Annual Meeting (全國第15屆可拓學年會) – Extenics Level 1 Exam

The 15th Annual Meeting of the Extenics  (全國第15屆可拓學年會) was organized by Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) (中國人工智能學會), undertook by CAAI Extenics Professional Committee (中國人工智能學會可拓學專業委員會) and Ningbo Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University (NITZU) (浙江大學寧波理工學院) form 10 to 12 Aug 2016.  The previous day was the 1st Extenics Level 1 examination which aimed to align all fundamental knowledge of Extenics Innovation Method for participants who would become Extenics engineer or consultant in the future.  Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文), Prof. Yang Chunyan (楊春燕) and Prof. Xingsen Li (李興森) were the examiners for this certification.  I took a photo of the building.

HKSTP Seminar on Laboratory Safety & Conveyance of Hazardous Materials

The seminar on “Laboratory Safety & Conveyance of Hazardous Materials in Science Park” was organized by SHE team in HKSTP on 3 & 4 Aug 2016.  Safety is of paramount importance to HKSTP. With over 80 laboratories now in operation by Science Park partner companies, managing risks is vital to safeguard our health and well-being – not only of the laboratory operators, but of the Park community as a whole.  This free seminar covered our aspirations towards laboratory safety; best practice in the conveyance of hazardous materials and case sharing of laboratory incidents.  In the beginning, Mr. Morris Chan introduced Health and Safety role in the park.


We were honor to invite Mr. Yip Sung Tat (University Safety Office, CUHK) as our guest speaker and shared the Safety Guideline – On-site Conveyance of Hazardous Materials in the Hong Kong Science Park.

TRIZfest 2016 – Day 3

In 2016, there is the TRIZ 60 anniversary and its founder, Genrich Altshuller’s 90 years birthday.  The 12th International Conference “TRIZfest 2016” was conducted on 28 to 30 July 2016 in Beijing, China which co-organized by the International TRIZ Association (MATRIZ) and China Association for Quality (CAQ).  The last day of the conference was also held in the new building of CAQ headcounter on 30 July 2016.  I took a photo for the whole CAQ Building.


The morning part was TRIZ Master Certification session.  Some applicants needed to present their achievement for MATRIZ Level 4 certification. Mr. Sergei Ikovenko (President, MATRIZ) gave opening remarks.

TRIZfest 2016 – Day 1

In 2016, there is the TRIZ 60 anniversary and its founder, Genrich Altshuller’s 90 years birthday.  The 12th International Conference “TRIZfest 2016” was conducted on 28 to 30 July 2016 in Beijing, China which co-organized by the International TRIZ Association (MATRIZ) and China Association for Quality (CAQ).  It is my first time to join the conference after my MATRIZ level 2 coures and I would like to summarize it for sharing below.  Before the conference on 28 July 2016, I took a photo with Mr. Sergei Ikovenko (President, MATRIZ).


The first day venue was in International Culture Center of Capital Normal University. I took a photo inside the hall.

IIE(HK) Innovation Talk on CIEDH & IISEAsia 2016

Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman, HKSQ), Dr. Victor Lo (Vice President, ISIHK) and I (HKSTP) were honor to be invited by Mr. Harry Li (Past President, The Institute of Industrial Engineers (Hong Kong) - IIE(HK)) to give innovation talk on the 7th Forum for Council of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management Department Heads (CIEDH2016) and the 5th Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers Asian Conference (IISEAsia2016) on 22nd July 2016 at The University of Hong Kong.  The theme of this forum is “The Opportunities and Challenges of Industrial Engineer Training in the New Era”.  Prof. Fugee Tsung (Exco member of HKSQ; Professor, IELM Dept., HKUST) chaired this session.


Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman, HKSQ; Managing Director, TQM Consultants) was the last speaker in the morning session of the 2nd day of conference.  His presentation topic named “Process and Innovation: How to Integrate”.  In the beginning, Aaron briefed the history started form Adam Smith theory in 1776.  At that time, every process separated specifically for productivity but it neglected human factors.

HKSTP TecONE Seminar on drafting partnership agreement on R&D projects

The TecONE seminar entitled “What to Note when drafting Partnership Agreement on R&D Project” was organized by Hong Kong science & Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) on 20th July 2016.  A neat and solid partnership agreement protects you from potential counterparty risks. No matter your partners are MNCs, statutory bodies, or freelancers, a partnership agreement helps you to kick off a successful and satisfying collaboration.  The invited speaker was Ms. Jade Tang (Senior Associate, Oldham, Li & Nie Lawyers) and she would share the major areas including preparatory stage, structure of the partnership, local law and tax issues, intellectual properties (IPs) and so on.

Post-WSCQ Seminar on Extenics (可拓學) and its application

The Post-World Summit for Chinese Quality (WSCQ) seminar on Extenics (可拓學) was organized by  Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM), City University of Hong Kong on 9 July 2016.  Before the seminar, I introduced the background of WSCQ and its theme was Quality and Innovation.  Therefore, we invited Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文) and Prof. Yang Chunyan (楊春燕) to be our guest speakers to continue the yesterday keynote for more details introduction.

The 1st World Summit for Chinese Quality

The 1st World Summit for Chinese Quality was organized by Pre-World Alliance for Chinese Quality (WACQ) (全球華人品質聯盟()), co-organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM), City University of Hong Kong on 8 July 2016.  The founding members of Pre-World Alliance for Chinese included China Association for Quality (CAQ), Chinese Society for Quality (CSQ), Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and Singapore Quality Institute (SQI).  This Alliance was established after the 3rd Chinese Quality Forum (CQF) in Beijing in 2015.

In the beginning, Ir. Dr. The Hon WK Lo (盧偉國) (Representative of the Engineering Functional Constituency of the Legislative Council and Chairman of HKQAA) gave an opening speech.  He reviewed China history and found that Qin Dynasty strong because of focusing on science and technology.  In this Dynasty, the first standardization process had been done including word and road in China.  He also added the tools made by Bronze which was a complicated process at that time and not depended on one man but a team.  So Quality has long history in China Culture and we needed to re-discover it and enhance its spirit again.  


Since Dr. WK Lo needed to attend Legco meeting this morning, we took a group photo with all participants first.


Then HKSQ chairman Mr. Peter Fung (馮光) gave a welcome speech and introduced the 30th anniversary of HKSQ and briefed our development history.


Dr. KS Chin (錢桂生) (Associate Head and Associate Professor, SEEM Dept., CityU; Former Chairman of HKSQ) gave a welcome speech and briefed the first Quality Degree course named “Bachelor of Engineering in Total Quality Engineering (BENG TQE)” in Hong Kong.


After that Prof. Tang Xiaoqing (唐曉青) (Vice-chairperson, CAQ) gave speech on behalf of Pre-World Alliance for Chinese Quality (WACQ) and held the ceremony of the 1st World Summit for Chinese Quality (WSCQ).

The Pre-World Alliance for Chinese Quality (全球華人品質聯盟(籌)) Meeting

The first meeting for the pre-World Alliance for Chinese Quality (WACQ) (全球華人品質聯盟()) was organized by Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) in City University of Hong Kong on 7 July 2016 that is one day before the first World Summit for Chinese Quality (WSCQ) (第一屆全球華人品質峰會). In the beginning, Ms. Duan Yihong (段一泓) (Under Secretary, CAQ) gave a welcome speech and briefed the previous meeting which was held in Beijing on 6 Nov 2015. And She introduced the representative of CAQ included Prof. Tang Xiaoqing (唐曉青) (Vice-President, CAQ), Ms. Wang (王麗林) and Mr. Wang (王海濤).


We booked a meeting design lecture room for the pre-World Alliance for Chinese Quality (WACQ) and representatives of CAQ, CSQ, HKSQ and SQI all together in the morning.

HKSQ Quality Philosophies Series – Deming Workshop

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) is celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2016.  One of the activities to commemorate this occasion is the first seminar of our Quality Philosophies Series featuring Deming, Juran and Crosby which held on 9 April 2016.  Then we arranged a Deming Workshop on 3 July 2016 and the trainer was Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman, HKSQ) who was the first people I knew in Hong Kong attended Dr. Deming famous 4 Days Training Course named “Methods for Management of Productivity and Quality” in USA in 1987.  Since Deming’s theory established 30 years ago, Aaron would review that theory with us in modern management perspective.


Before the seminar, I (Former Chairman, HKSQ) introduced our flagship event named “The 1st World Summit for Chinese Quality” and the post-summit innovation seminar entitled “Introduction and Application of Extenics” on 8 & 9 July 2016, respectively.  Extenics was Chinese original innovation methodology developed by Prof. Cai Wen for 30 years.

HKSTP Seminar on MedTech Innovation from Silicon Valley

HKSTP organized a seminar named “MedTech Innovation from Silicon Valley” on 29 Jun 2016.  The seminar held in afternoon with light lunch indicating our Lunch and Learn practice.  Both speakers had come from Stanford Biodesign before they established their MedTech startup.  Stanford Biodesign established in 2000 and it aims to create an ecosystem of training and support for Stanford University students, fellows, and faculty with the talent and ambition to become health technology innovators.  Its goal was (and continues to be) looking beyond research and discovery to provide the knowledge, skills, mentoring, and networking required to deliver meaningful and valuable innovations to patients everywhere.

The first speaker was Dr. Robert T Chang (Assistant Professor, Ophthalmology) and his topic named “From Physician to Physician Innovator”.  He briefed some history of Stanford Biodesign and his experience.


Oh! Li Ka Shing Center in Stanford was mentioned.  Mr. Lily Truong was the next speaker who also studied in here.

Innovation Product Development Seminar - Extenics (可拓學) application in Shenzhen

The seminar for Innovation Product Development – Extenics application in Shenzhen (產品研發創造力研討會 -可拓學在深圳創新的運用) was organized by Shenzhen Intellectual Property Council (深圳市知識產權局) and organized by Shenzhen Intellectual Property Society(深圳知識產權研究會) on 28 Jun 2016.  This seminar was focused on application of Extenics in different industries and exchanged ideas from different experts.  Mr. Yin Hanfan (鄞漢藩) (General Secretary, SZIPS) was MC and introduced all speakers in the beginning of the seminar.


Before the seminar, Mr. Chen (陳民鋼處長 -深圳市知識產權局) gave the welcome speech.  He told us there had 100 thousand IP was grant in last year in Shenzhen.  Shenzhen government would focus on the application to enhance companies’ competitive edge 


Prof. Yang Chunyan (楊春燕) (Director, Institute of Extenics and Innovation Methods, Guangdong University of Technology) was the first speaker and her topic entitled “Thinking Innovation based on Extenics – Establishment and Application of Base-element” (可拓學的思維創新 基元的建立與應用).
