IIE(HK) Innovation Talk on CIEDH & IISEAsia 2016

Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman, HKSQ), Dr. Victor Lo (Vice President, ISIHK) and I (HKSTP) were honor to be invited by Mr. Harry Li (Past President, The Institute of Industrial Engineers (Hong Kong) - IIE(HK)) to give innovation talk on the 7th Forum for Council of Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management Department Heads (CIEDH2016) and the 5th Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers Asian Conference (IISEAsia2016) on 22nd July 2016 at The University of Hong Kong.  The theme of this forum is “The Opportunities and Challenges of Industrial Engineer Training in the New Era”.  Prof. Fugee Tsung (Exco member of HKSQ; Professor, IELM Dept., HKUST) chaired this session.

Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman, HKSQ; Managing Director, TQM Consultants) was the last speaker in the morning session of the 2nd day of conference.  His presentation topic named “Process and Innovation: How to Integrate”.  In the beginning, Aaron briefed the history started form Adam Smith theory in 1776.  At that time, every process separated specifically for productivity but it neglected human factors.

Until now, many people still believed Productivity and Quality was inversely proportional.  However, Deming’s theory broken this idea and his principle could lead both Productivity and Quality to improve simultaneously.  Then he mentioned his successful case when he came back from USA after Deming’s 4 day course. He assisted his serviced company at that time and achieved significant improvement, as well as, awarded by government both Quality and Productivity.

Then Aaron briefed the Innovation and quoted a case between Motorol and Apple as an example.  He explained Apple used much shorter time from R&D to Manufacturing a product which market satisfied but Motorola cycle time was much longer.

At the end, Aaron said both Made in China 2025 and Germany Industry 4.0 were not the fourth industry revolution but they were just advancing manufacturing.

Prof. Fugee Tsung presented a certificate to Dr. Aaron Tong.

One of afternoon parallel sessions was “Industrial Sponsor Session”.  We took a photo for memory. (Left: Mr. Harry Li, Dr. Victor Lo, I and Dr. Aaron Tong)

I was the first speaker and my presentation named “Innovation Management – Trend, Tools and Standards in Quality Perspective”.  My presentation introduced the Innovation & Quality tools, Innovation related standards and the coming ISO trend.

I reviewed the history of Quality and Innovation tools development since industrial revolution.  The Quality breakthrough history was stated as follows:
1800 – Industrial Revolution
1940 – WWII
1800 – 1900: Inspection
1900 – 1950: QC, SPC, QA
1950: Juran/Deming, TQC, TQM
1970: Crosby – Quality is Free
1987: ISO 9000 series
1995: GE Six Sigma
2000: Six Sigma, Lean

Then I briefed the different famous Innovation Tools which separated into human-centered innovation including Brainstorming (1939), Creatology (1951), NM Method (1970), Six Thinking Hats (1985), Thinkertoys (1991) and Design Thinking (1987); as well as, systematic engineering innovation including TRIZ (1956), USIT (1995) and Extenics (1983).

Lastly, I introduced different standards included “BS 7000-1:2008 – Guide to managing innovation” and “CEN/TS 16555-1:2013 – Innovation Management – Part 1: Innovation Management System”.  The coming ISO standard for innovation management system would be named ISO 50501 draft by TC 279.  I predicted the new ISO standard would be integrated the existing ISO 9001:2015 and CEN/TS 16555-1:2013.   At the end, I quoted Mr. Peter Merrill (Innovation Keynote Speaker, ASQ) idea that building innovation culture into company through innovation people in which separated into Creators, Connectors, Developers and Doers.

Mr. Larry Li presented a souvenir to me.

Dr. Victor Lo was the second speaker and his topic was “Innovative Problem Solving for Industrial Engineers”.  He quoted IISE definition of Industrial and Systems Engineering as “Design, Improvement and Installation of integrated systems of People, materials, information, equipment and energy.”

He expected IE student paid more attention on the following items:
Design – the art or process of planning and creating something
Improvement change – that makes something better or more valuable
Installation – put together and made ready for use
People
And then he recommended FIVE skill sets for IE including Interpersonal skill, Facilitating skill, Learning Leader, Analytical skill and Innovation skill.

Then he presented his overall ideas on PKIR model to achieve the goal through both quality and innovation paths.  He told us the innovation part was mainly reference to four tools and they were Design Thinking, TRIZ, Six Sigma and CWQC.

Finally, he used his name “VICTOR” as conclusion.

Mr. Larry Li presented a souvenir to Dr. Victor Lo.

After the break, I took a photo with the last speaker in this session Mr. Zhao Qi-chao (趙起超) (Officer, KINGFAR in Beijing)

His presentation topic was “Research Project and University-Industrial collaboration based on human factors engineering”.  Then he demonstrated different research employing VR to simulate human responses.  It was very interesting.

People buying behavior was also simulated.  Other researches included simulated driver, military equipment, airspace study, etc.

Dr. Aaron Tong represented IIE(HK) presented souvenir to Mr. Zhao Qi-chao.
