Extenics Webinar: Intelligent Handling of Contradiction Problems and Its Application in Management Innovation

 Webinar named “Intelligent Handling of Contradiction Problems and Its Application in Management Innovation” (统信大讲堂-矛盾问题智能化处理及其在管理创新中的应用) was organized by Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (上海对外经贸大学) and Prof. Xingsen Li (李兴森) was the guest speaker. In his talk, the content included nature of contradiction problems, intelligent handling of contradiction problems, paths for management innovation and its key applications.

Prof. Li firstly briefed that innovation could solve omnipresent contradiction problems. However, the core problem we met is the limit of individual innovation capability compared with infinite demand of innovation. A systematic innovation methodology was needed to help us. We also needed high and multiple dimensions as well as system thinking.

Then Prof. Li mentioned the academic contribution of Extenics including extension the scope of mathematics, developed extension set, extension logic, etc. 

And then Prof. Li introduced the father of Extenics – Prof. Cai Wen (蔡文).  He also briefed different researches including extension strategic generation, extension data mining, extension design, management of extension engineering, … etc.

The modeling, extension and transformation were explained.

After that he described the extension set and its application. Using different examples, the transformation of classification was demonstrated. The following is one of examples to demonstrate the application of extension set.

Finally, Prof. Li briefed what is management. It is separated into two parts.  The first part is duct and second part is manipulated that input is material and resource, through the duct with manipulation to create value in output.

The macroscope view of management system was discussed.

Lastly, Prof. Li showed the Management Extension Innovation Model using Extenics and big data to enhance the innovation capability.

At the end, Prof. Li encouraged students to focus the contradiction problem handling in different field and mentioned three characteristics for enhancing their competitive power that are excellence, scarcity and innovation.

IPHatch HK 2022 - IP Strategies for Start-ups What and Why need to Know?

 IPHatch webinar named “IP Strategies for Start-ups What and Why need to Know?” was co-organized by HKTDC and IPHatch Startup Foundry on 12th May 2022.  The guest speaker is Mr. Jason Loh (CEO & Founder of Pice Future).  Firstly he discussed the definition of a patent that is the granting of property right by a sovereign authority to an inventor. A patent provides the inventor exclusive rights to the patented process, design, or invention for a certain period in exchange for a complete disclosure of the invention.

Then Mr. Jason Loh mentioned IP strategy including IP budget to prioritize your key rights/markets and use extension of time strategically during filing, as well as to perform IP audit regularly. And then he discussed some pitfalls for patenting start-ups’ IP such as failure to have NDAs in place, disclosure of technical solution, etc.

After that he raised four steps to develop a good IP strategy including 1) establishing guidelines by listing down all IP; 2) Analyze your competitive advantage and barrier to entry; 3) analyze any third party involved; and 4) plan an innovation and technology roadmap.

He also mentioned some benefits for SMEs and Start-ups to care about IP such as preventing or delaying the competitors enter the market, building corporate value and trustworthy partners, etc.

Finally, he briefed some IP strategies in their start-ups pool and introduced IP Landscapes to map and visualize your patent information.

Lastly, he introduced IPHatch 2021/2022 for technology start-ups and briefed the timeline in 2022.

OBORRI Webinar: International Economic Trends - Post Pandemic

 Webinar named “International Economic Trends - Post Pandemic” was organized by One Belt One Road Research Institute (OBORRI), Chu Hai College of Higher Education on 5^th May 2022. Prof. Rogach Oleksandr was the first guest speaker and his topic named “Current Trends in Global MNE’s Investments: Post Pandemic”. Firstly, he briefed the multinational enterprises (MNEs) revolutionized world economy (Globalization) in the mid-1980s.

Then he mentioned the MNE’s investments which separated from “Before Pandemic”, “Amid Pandemic” and “After Pandemic”. Top 10 major FDI recipients in 2019 and 2020 were discussed.

After that Prof. Oleksandr discussed the important risks in 2022 such as new waves of Covid-19, geopolitical tensions, bottlenecks of labour (supply chain) and inflation, etc. Then he introduced the three key technology for new industrial revolution (NIR) that were robotics-enabled automation, supply chain digitalization and additive manufacturing.

Finally, he concluded the three determinants would tend to favour one of four trajectories and some trends from 2022-2023 showed as follows .

-          MNEs will consider locations of FDI outside of the main business cities

-          MNEs (namely manufacturers) will shorten their supply chain risk.

-          MNEs will further reshore their activities.

-          MNEs will prefer a smaller project sizes.

The second speaker was Prof. Alexander Pidchosa (Associate Professor, OBOR Research Institute, Chu Hai College & Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine) and his topic entitled “Global Trade in Commodities: Is the Commodities Supercycle Accelerating?”

Firstly, he explained the relationship between commodities and inflation. Then he discussed the monthly Producer Price Index (PPI) from 2019 to 2022 to explain more about recent commodities supercycle.

After that Prof. Pidchosa introduced some cases for explanation such as key petrochemicals demand growing. He said commodity prices are subject to increase due to the more complicated routes; difficulties in ports; search for alternative ways of transportation; increasing fuel prices; and introducing new environmental standards for sea transport.

Lastly, Prof. Pidchosa concluded that the commodities supercycle would only accelerate in the near future.

ESG Webinar – Digital Era Strategy – 9 Data Strategies to Win Customers’ Hearts

The Executive Study Group (ESG) webinar named “Digital Era Strategy – 9 Data Strategies to Win Customers’ Hearts” was held by Asia Pacific Institute for Strategy Limited (APIFS) on 4^th May 2022.   In the beginning, Dr. Mark Lee briefed the background, history, and goal of Asia Pacific Institute for Strategy Limited (APIFS). 

Firstly, Dr. Mark Lee introduced guest speaker Mr. Neil Hoyne who is a senior fellow at Wharton and Google’s Chief Measurement Strategist. 

Then they discussed how many companies would employ company data for decision making and Mr. Neil Hoyne said only 6%! Moreover, management believed CFO upto 85-90% but believed Marketing only 10%.

Then Dr. Mark Lee shared the first insight was more focused on building customer relationship such as customer life cycle value.

Insight #2 is digital transformation is part of company DNA that not a business fashion term.  Mr. Hoyne also quoted Kennedy statement that “victory has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan.”

Insight #3 that no perfect data you have but got insight from such data to ahead your competitors.

Insight #4 is marketer’s KPI on customer life cycle value that could close the gap with CFO.

Insight #5 is to build up database to connect people.

Insight #6 is for data scientist that they need front line staff and customer information.  So google employ data science as sale representative.  

Insight #7 is to rotate questions weekly and got as many new ideas as possible. 

Insight #8 don’t ask too many questions to your customers but good question with goal.

Lastly, Dr. Mark Lee introduced Mr. Neil Hoyne’s first book named “Converted: The Data-Driven Way to Win Customer’s Hearts” which is published in Feb 2022.

HKSQxEngDS Webinar - Survival Mode Quality: Quality & Innovation Tools, and ISO Standards for Survival in a Pandemic

 The Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) and CityU EngD Society co-organized a webinar on “Survival Mode Quality: Quality & Innovation Tools, and ISO Standards for Survival in a Pandemic” on 30^th April 2022. The webinar tried to combine different quality management and innovation tools (Lean & Extenics), as well as ISO standards (ISO 9001, ISO 22301 & ISO 22316) for achieving the survival mode of businesses.  I (Dr. Lotto Lai, Chairman of HKSQ) was the guest speaker for HKSQ and EngD Society on this topic.

Firstly, I briefed the impact under Covid-19 and the contents of this webinar including business model canvas, lean concept, extenics, ISO 9001 risk-base thinking, business continuity and organization resilient, as well as, survival mode quality model.

Using HKSQ as example, I shared our problems through Business Model during pandemic period such as no onsite activities including seminar, visit and workshop, etc.

The first quality tool selected for survival mode of business is lean concept.  After briefing the process of lean, 7 wastes (muda) were mentioned and the 8^th waste was identified as unused employee creativity. 

And then Extenics and Extension Innovation Method were introduced for diamond thinking as so to create more new ideas to solve our problems.

Recently example is designated taxis (抗疫專用的士) that can be explained through extenics model for car rental.

After that ISO 9001 risks and opportunities (clause 6.1) was employed. We used HKSQ case to identified four risk and evaluated their level.  Opposition of those risks are our opportunity and we tried to propose different actions. 

Incident management under ISO 22301 (previously BS 25999) was discussed. This business continuity management is a specific application of the broader concept of resilience to ensure organization survival during disruptive incidents.

And then ISO 22316 organizational resilience was introduced that is holistic management system for enhancing organization capability to absorb and adapt in a changing environment to enable it to deliver its objectives and to survive and prosper. Organizational resilience states the structure approach including principles, attributes and activities.

Finally, we reviewed the business model canvas in Viability, Desirability and Feasibility of HKSQ.

For Viability, we considered the profit and loss account report to analyze our financial health of the organization.

For Desirability, we employed Kano Model to consider our customers’ needs.

For Feasibility, we also used extenics to create new methods to provide services under pandemic. One example we used are online teaching in university and different ideas through different combination as well as evaluation were demonstrated.

At the end, I purposed the Survival Mode Quality Model involved all topics we discussed today and hopefully it could give inspiration to all participants.

CityU SDSC Seminar – Data-driven Specialization towards Intelligent Internet of Things

 The CityU Online Seminar named “Data-driven Specialization towards Intelligent Internet of Things” was organized by The School of Data Science (SDSC) on 26^th April 2022.  This talk invited Dr. Zimu Zhou (Assistant Professor, School of Computing and Information Systems, Singapore Management University) as guest speaker and he would like to share data-riven approach that optimizes the computation to the application context in order to break the resource limits of IoT devices and systems. Two examples included compression of multiple deep neural networks for mobile computer vision and post-deployment sensor calibration for air pollution monitoring were shared.

In the beginning, Dr. Zimu Zhou briefed the background of Internet of Things (IoT) since 1999.  After 20+ years development, massive data generated from city and intelligent applications were popular that IoT as embedded system but we faced grand challenge on high performance against low resource.

Firstly, Dr. Zhou discussed the question “how to customize advanced data processing such as deep learning to IoT context for efficient deployment?” He was inspired from biology about network pruning.

An overview of network pruning taxonomy was discussed including what to prune? how to prune? When to prune? and how often? It was assumed to remove redundant parameters within single DNN. Some IoT applications were discussed.

Multitask Zipping (MTZ) and its merge pre-trained DNN via neuron sharing were introduced. He also briefed some problems of pruning a multitask DNN including “if there are task B exclusive parameters in the shared part, pruning may eliminate parameters crucial for task B” that creates conflicts and “if there are shared parameters duplicated in the task exclusive parts, pruning may not remove such redundancy” that it was unable to merge duplicated neurons into shared parts.

After that Dr. Zhou discussed the 2^nd question “how to enhance IoT applications governed by domain sciences with big data?” He then briefed some sensor employed in air pollution monitoring but those low cost & low power sensors had the data quality problem. He proposed calibration transfer for automatic calibration of sensors without access to references. And future work he proposed was on-device calibration.

Finally, Dr. Zhou purposed collaborative intelligent IoT and employed cross-device federated learning. Deploying federated learning to IoT applications needed on-device model training.

Lastly, Dr. Zhou mentioned intelligent transport deploying federated learning to IoT applications and thanks his collaborators.
