The School of Data Science and the Hong
Kong Institute for Data Science jointly hosted a Distinguished Seminar Series
on 23 October, 2020. It is honor to have Professor Qionghai DAI to deliver the
Distinguished Seminar titled "Artificial Intelligence - Computing,
Algorithm, Interaction"
In the beginning, Prof. Qinghai Dai mentioned from the development of production tools to the information age and then we were now in the age of AI included unmanned system, nanotechnology, quantum computation, IoT, etc.
For Computation, AI & computing capability developed collectively and exponentially from 1956 to 2016 (Alpha Go) but slowing down now. In order to enhance computation capability, it would achieve either from architecture innovations (e.g. neural network processors) or using optoelectronic computing. Then Prof. Dai briefed the history of optical computing to us.
And then he compared
MIT, Cambridge and Tsinghua AI computation capability.
The second
direction was AI Algorithm. Prof. Dai
briefed the development of AI Algorithm and asked a question about what’s next
after deep learning.
One of possible
solution was inspired by brain science and then Prof. Dai compared the Nobel
Prize on Brian Science (Human Think) against Turing Award on AI (Machine Think).
The last direction was Interaction. Firstly, he quoted Alan Turing (1950) that the development of AI is not trying to turn humans into machines, nor to turn machines into humans, but to “research and develop theories, methods, technologies, and application systems for simulating, extending, and expanding human intelligence capabilities to solve complex problems and serve mankind”. Thus, collaboration, safety and equity were the key to a harmony human-AI relationship.
AI and human interaction should be considered as the future of AI live with human. Huma-AI interaction achieved revolutionary user experience through dedicated AI interfaces and general AI interfaces.
Finally, he
concluded the intelligence driven our future through smart brain including
smart optoelectronic chip, knowledge driven, data driven and cognition driven.
Lastly, Prof.
Dai summarized the future trends would be human-machine symbiosis and
harmonious development, cognitive computer theory and testing, new computing
form and carrier, etc.
