CityU EngD Society - AI Innovation & Adoption Seminar 2026

CityU EngD Society arranged “AI Innovation & Adoption Seminar 2026” on 25^th Apr 2026 in CityU LT8. Hong Kong is gathered at a pivotal moment. Artificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept—it is the present reality reshaping our world. While the headlines focus on grand possibilities, the real challenge lies in practical adoption. This seminar is dedicated to the 'how'—how we integrate AI into our workflows, how we empower our teams, and how we harness this tool for tangible growth. Adoption is a journey of strategy and culture, not just technology. During the seminar, we took a group photo of EngD Society organizing members and guest speakers. 

I met many friends and summarized as follows. When I arrived CityU, I met Ir Matthew Tsui in front of the entry.

Before the seminar start, I took a photo with Mr. Fengjiang Hu (胡封彊) and Mr. Anson Yeung.

I also took photo with Ms. Kelly Liu, Dr. Rocky Lam and his team (Ryan Leung, Allen Peng and Trevor Chan).

I met Dr. Szeto Wing Hong again.

And then took a photo with Dr. Man Lee.

Another cohort Dr. Jacky Hau who also taught in Department of Logistics and Maritime Studies, PolyU.

I am great to meet my old colleague in Science Park Ms. Cherrie Lai.

Rocky and I met CityU Eminent Society member Dr. Venus Tang and her husband.

In the beginning, Dr. Rocky Lam (Chairman, CityU EngD Society) gave welcome message.

The first speaker was Prof Jiang Hongyi (SYE) who introduced our new course named “MSc in AI-Driven Innovation”. He discussed what talent need in the AI era.

The positioning of the new course covered AI, System Engineering and Innovation Design. There are two roles of AI that are Enabler and Embedded (Product and Service). 

There are four cores in the course and they are AI concept and application, design science, technology innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as, AI enabled innovation. Elective courses provided by seven colleges in CityU.

Finally, Prof. Jiang Hongyi said the program aimed to train up innovator and leader in AI era.

After that Dr. Ray Kong introduced EngD programme and our society. He also introduced EngD Mentorship by cohorts.

The second speaker was Mr. Chao Wang (王超) (General Manager of Platform Ke Holdings - 贝壳 基础平台) and his topic entitled “      Technology Empowers Industry, Digital Intelligence Leads the Future — Beike's Digital Transformation Path - 科技赋能产业 数智引领未来—贝壳数智化之路”. He briefed how AI LLM worked with their service.

Firstly, he briefed the company background and how it accumulated enough housing related data since 2008.

And then he mentioned the Beike’s six core service. He also demonstrated some chatbox / AI agents using DeepSeek R1. 

Finally, he said that "I hope that in the future, everyone’s resume will include an experience of growing together with AI; it is not a story of machines replacing humans, but revitalizing life."

The third speaker was Ms. Amy Zhang (张金辉) (General Manager，Shenzhen Wu Mu Digital Culture Limited - 深圳五亩数字文化产业有限公司) and her presentation named “AI-Driven Innovation for SMEs: From Real Demand Discovery to Scalable Productization - 人工智能驱动中小企业创新：从真实需求发现到可规模化产品落地”. 

Ms. Amy Zhang studied 34 companies and found that 25 companies’ AI projects were fail. She got the insight that the ultimate goal of AI is not intelligence, but results.

Don't ask what artificial intelligence can do; ask where the pain points are. Her proposed optimal AI implementation plan is to enable ordinary employees to achieve a stable output (80/100 level).

Lastly, she would like to propose the integration between academic and industry through CityU laboratory.

The fourth speaker was Mr Hu Feng Jiang (胡封疆) (Deputy Director of Jinan Branch of Tianjin Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute - 天津市政工程设计研究总院 济南分院 副院长) and his topic was “Research on Key Technologies for Improving the Quality and Efficiency of Highway Operation Driven by AI and Multimodal Data - AI与多模态数据驱动的高速公路运营提质增效关键技术研究”.

Firstly, Ms. Hu introduced the background of highway operation and then introduced AI to improve the management of traffic and income through different AI data mining and analysis. 

AI and Multimodal Data enabled the high way user had four stages including indicators database building, data dimensions reducing, optimizing AI algorithm and confirming cluster results.

Lastly, he proposed the solution of Highway Operation Driven by AI and Multimodal Data including Highway, data intelligent, framework, implementation business and location arrangement.

The fifth speaker was Mr. Anson Yeung (Senior Engineer, Trane HK) and his presentation entitled “Driving AI Applications with Predictive Insights for Chiller Solutions”.

Firstly, he proposed to empower manufacturing with digital service transformation through real time monitoring, data record & transparency, as well as, analytic insights.

And then Mr. Anson Yeung discussed different cases from Carrier SMART center.

Finally, he used Chiller IoT Platform to demonstrate user platform and interface for monitoring and control.

The last speaker was Dr. Rocky Lam (Chairman, CityU EngD Society) and his friend Mr. Ivan Lam (Deloitte partner APJ (former CIO)) and their topic was “AI adoption in Digital Finance”.

In the beginning, Rocky briefed the market responsiveness Financial Planning Software market trends.  Then he introduced the Jedox strategic roadmap to autonomous finane in Financial Planning and Analysis from now to 2 years and 5 years later.

After that he introduced Agentic AI and its problem in privacy and information security.

Finally, Mr. Ivan Lam shared his experience in Deloitte about AI governance, data and regulation. There are four elements to be considered including Strengthen AI, Cybersecurity & Data Oversight, as well as, Modernize Data Infrastructure. He concluded “Good AI needs Clear Data”.

I (Dr. Lotto Lai) was the last speaker and my topic entitled “Introduction to AI ethics education, AI safety and innovation to connect student projects with industry applications”. I introduced COMP course structure in the beginning.

Then, I introduced the ethics curriculum and I invited officials from the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) to enhance our students' ethical background.

And then I demonstrated some of my students group project for avoiding AI deception.

After that I introduced testing, inspection and certificate industry in Hong Kong.

I linked up 5 companies for our final year project (named capstone project in PolyU) and one of which involved using visual computing technology to conduct biotechnological ecotoxicology testing to identify the results.

Finally, I introduced Macau laboratory introduced the MICA legionella method reduced the testing time from 10-14 day to 48h because of AI identification.

After the seminar, all EngD cohorts and students took a group photo for memory.
