Generative AI INsights 2023 – Conference Bridging Generative AI and Academia

The Conference bridging Generative AI and Academia named “Generative AI INsights 2023 (GAIN) was organized by CUHK Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research (CLEAR), Knowledge and Education Exchange Platform (KEEP) and AI in Education on 8th Jun 2023. This conference encourages the exploration and exchange of the potential of generative AI in teaching, learning, and assessment, as well as the ethical and legal implications of this technology. 


In the beginning, Prof. Isabella Poon (Pro-Vice-Chancellor / Vice – President, Faculty of Science, CUHK) gave an opening ceremony.


The first keynote was Prof. Irwin King (Chairman and Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, CUHK) and his topic entitled “The Evolution and Future of Generative AI in Education”. In the beginning, Prof. King demonstrated the AI girl giving speech. A new era is coming.


Then he discussed the hype cycle for AI 2022 by Gartner that Generative AI is very hot topic within 2 to 5 years. He said Artificial General Intelligence may be realized after 10 years. 


And then Prof. King discussed how ChatGPT passed Turing test and what’s next ChatGPT. Some AI tools for educators in general were demonstrated.


After that he also showed some AI tools for research use. AI could inspire Creativity, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Collaboration, Curiosity and Growth.


Finally, Prof. King discussed assessment style changed when employed ChatGPT in university including homework essay, written exams, home & solo work. That becomes more onsite work immediately, higher interaction and team work. Lastly, he shared some parting thoughts including use AI to think with you but not for you, moving from knowledge transfer to process-oriented acquisition.


The second keynote (remote) was Dr. Edwin Creely (Associate Professor, School of Curriculum, Teaching and Inclusive, Monash University) and his presentation named “Generative AI and the Future of Education”.  In the beginning, Dr. Creely demonstrated AI generated poems.


Then he briefed how generative AI to substantially shape education and teacher education into the future. 


After that Dr. Creely pointed out three ethical issues in education including ownership, Western bias and erroneous information.  Two dangers in education were discussed and they were over-reliance and subjugation. 


Lastly, he showed the AI flameworks for AI readiness index (AIRI) and concluded two implications for education including AI literacies and SIMBI(AI)TIC being & thinking.


Morning session panel discussion with the theme: Generative AI in Teaching, Learning, and Assessment


They discussed no AI replacing your job but who use AI better than you replacing your job. For education, institute need to support and change their assessment methods. We need to have background knowledge so as to decide ChatGPT assistant reporting are good or bad, right or wrong.


After lunch, the third keynote was Prof. David Carless (Professor, Faculty of Education, HKU) and his topic was “Assessment and Feedback Re-designs for the Generative AI Era”.


Then Prof. Carless discussed about assessment in higher education when ChatGPT employed. He suggested to reduce assessment overload. Less can be more that reducing content and quantity of assessment that is not lowering standards. Re-design of assessment is needed. 


Finally, he suggested some redesigned assessments such as cumulative assessment designs (series of tacks on thinking process), evidence of iterative cycles, co-design of assessment, digital oral assessment, ChatGPT + group assessment, etc.



Afternoon session panel discussion with the theme: Generative AI, Ethics, and the Law


They discussed the concern of AI accuracy and responsibility of AI use. Ethic is another key consideration. People needed to get the consent and think what is right thing to do. How to write ethic guideline were also discussed.


Student panel discussion with the theme: Generative AI in Education - The Student Views

They discussed AI could outperformed a human at writing, exam-taking activities and beyond. How does this make you feel about your future? And they also discussed to use generative AI to improve they learning.
