I Ching Class Christmas Concert to Zhongshan (易經班-彭教授中山戌時音樂會)

I Ching Class arranged a trip to go to Prof. Pang’s house for Christmas Concert on 27^th Dec 2024. The group photo was taken during the concert for memory. About 20 I Ching classmates and 20 Prof. Pang’s family and friends to join the concert. 

Day 1 (26 Dec 2024)

Minda and I went to Zhongshan on 26^th Dec 2024 and visited the surrounding of the hotel “SHERATON”.

We had late lunch on that day and the steak and fish are good taste.

Then we rode Ferris wheel.

We took photo when the Ferris wheel in the top.

After that we walked around and saw many buildings and sculpture related to Sun Yat-sen.

We also saw traditional dessert making.

Day 2 (27 Dec 2024)

The next day, we took a group photo with the military students in the hotel lobby. I bought some models of fighter jets.

Then Mind and I had a walk in Yat-sen Garden.

We saw a protected tower.

And then we had lunch with Prof. Pang and I Ching classmates in restaurant (海港城海鮮大酒樓).

We had fruitful lunch together.

After the lunch, we visited Prof. Pang’s house.

Patrick Lui, Eunice, Minda and I played the pickleball together.

Karen and Patrick Ng were against Kinsen and So Easy.

In the beginning, Prof. Pang demonstrated how to play pickleball.

Then another team played table tennis.

And then we tried the golf.

Prof. Pang also demonstrated the boxing.

Eunice, Minda, Pauline and Eva decorated Christmas tree.

After that we played the Poker with special rules.

Then we visited Prof. Pang’s library.

After that we had dinner together. We took a group photo with I Ching (易經) folding fan and Chinese folding fan with the word “法財侶地”.

Finally, we returned to Prof. Pang’s house for fortune telling first.

Then we started the concert named “彭教授中山戌時音樂會”. The banner was designed by Karen, Patrick and Kinsen. Minda and I took a photo when it set up.

The first song is "Below the Lion Rock" (獅子山下).

Karen asked us to install the Apps named “LED” and to be fans!

Christmas gift lottery, Prof. Pang’s granddaughter gave gifts to the winners.

COMP Distinguished Seminar – (Re)visiting Foundation Models for Science and Beyond

 Prof. Wei Wang, who is the Leonard Kleinrock Chair Professor in Computer Science and Computational Medicine at University of California, Los Angeles and the director of the Scalable Analytics Institute (ScAi), was invited as our guest speaker for COMP Distinguished Seminar Series on Data Science & Artificial Intelligence. Her topic entitled “(Re) visiting Foundation Models for Science and Beyond”.

In the beginning, Prof. Wei Wang introduced some foundation models including GPT-4, CLIP and SAM, etc.

Then she briefed Large Language Models’ evolutionary tree and (Pre-)trained Foundation Models with three major technique types.

And then she compared different LLM’s problem solving skills and found inaccuracy in different cases. For instance, clinical decision capabilities using GPT-40 is better than open models. 

Some error analyses were demonstrated among Llama, GPT-3.5 and GPT-4o. Error analysis of zero-shot learning (ZSL), ZSL + CoT prompting, Few-Shot Learning + Python, …, were also mentioned.

When discussed Medical LLM, bias analysis was concerned.

After that multi-modal LLMs for clinical application were discussed.

Finally, LLMs integrated with Visual Knowledge Graph was demonstrated in diagnosis prediction. 

Lastly, Prof. Prof. Wei Wang discussed different application of LLM such as MM-AIM for discovery and advanced manufacturing of extreme materials. I remembered using a fuzzy logic expert system for material selection on my final year project (FYP) long time ago.

At the end, Prof. Li Qing presented souvenir to Prof. Wang.

After the seminar, Dr. Jeff Tang, Dr. Kevin Yuen and I had Christmas lunch in PolyU.

CityU EngD Society 4th Exco Meeting cum Extra Ordinary General Meeting 2024

The 4^th CityU Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Society executive committee meeting cum extra-ordinary general meeting (EGM) was held on 21^st Dec 2024 in CityU. We discussed the coming AGM cum 20^th anniversary event. We took a meeting photo for memory.

In the beginning, we confirmed the EGM to be valid that 10 members with proxy participated out of 28 members. Then we reviewed the previous action items and setting our 20^th anniversary in Mar/Apr 2025. Fund raising and to expand membership eligibility. Rocky said ARO would like us to handle for whole Engineering Faculty.

Finally, we proposed our preliminary idea for creating CityU Engineering Society covered all programmes under the College of Engineering. CityU EngD Society is one of leading roles as founding member to initiate the new society.

Our next meeting would be held in middle Jan 2025.

HKSQ 2nd Exco Meeting and Winter Solstice Dinner 2024

 The 2^nd Exco meeting was held on 20^th Dec 2024 in PolyU and then we had Winter Solstice dinner together. In the beginning, we took a group.

Mr. Humphrey Lee was joined our meeting online.

During the 2^nd exco meeting, we discussed different activities in coming years, MOU with ISE Dept., PolyU, membership drive, etc.

In this moring, Dr. Jane Wong (Chairman, HKSQ) led HKSQ team to visit Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) for course accreditation.

They visited different laboratory facilities of HKMU including general lab, acoustic testing room, flammability testing room, etc.

They showed different tests to HKSQ team.

After the meeting, we had dinner for Winter Solstice in PolyU restaurant.

COMP Departmental Christmas Lunch 2024

It is my first time to join COMP Departmental Christmas Lunch on 19^th Dec 2024. We (teaching team) had lunch together.

I took a photo with Dr. Walter Fung and Dr. Kevin Yuen.

In the beginning, Prof. Li Qing gave welcome speech and introduced some new staffs and guests.

During the lunch, ADM office arranged a game to ask us different questions related to department, PolyU and Christmas.

Dr. Jeff Tang, Dr. Kevin Yuen and Prof. YANG Hongxia win the game!

After that we had lucky draw for ten gifts. Dr. LEONG Hong-va got it.

Our guest Mr. Wang also got it.

Another 8 colleagues (ADM office, IT and Academic) got the lucky draw.

Finally, we prepared a group photo.

I just selfie when we were preparing. We all had a happy Christmas lunch.
