ICAC Guest Talks for PolyU Students

I have teaching two courses in the Department of Computing, PolyU and they are COMP 3511 – Legal Aspects and Ethics of Computing and COMP 3512 – Legal Aspects, Professionalism and Ethics of Computing. There are two classes of COMP 3511 and one class of COMP 3512. Each class has near 120 students and COMP 3512 is not only for computing students but also engineering students. In the last lecture, I invited ICAC officers to give a guest talk that aims to equip our students’ anti-bribery concepts. Ms. Katherine Ma and Ms. Kelly Chow are guest speakers from ICAC. The first guest talk was on 2^nd Apr, Ms. Kelly Chow gave her talk to COMP 3511B class students.

During the polling, we discussed acceptance of gift practice such as red pocket during CNY.

I presented appreciation certificate to Ms. Kelly Chow.

And took a group photo with my students.

The second class was on 8^th Apr and Ms. Katherine Ma gave her talk to COMP 3511A class students.

The survey is about potential corruption risk and most of Computing students replied AI Fraud and friendship.

Before end of the class, I presented the appreciated certificate to Ms. Katherin Ma.

And then a group photo was taken for memory.

The last class was on 11^th Apr to the class of COMP 3512 with non-computing students.

Students poll results are confidential data and information leakage / security that could be common corruption risk.

At the end, we also took a group photo with students.

My courses designed for professional body (e.g. HKCS and HKIE) requirements on code of conduct. The course content mainly included Ethical Management and Analysis, InfoSec and AI Ethics, Privacy Law and Computer Related Crime Issues, IP management, Entrepreneurship – Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Startup ecosystem, as well as, Professional Bodies Code of Conduct, etc.

HKSQ Bank Meeting 2024

HKSQ directors, exco members and official bearers held a meeting in Hang Seng Head Office Business Centre in Central. The group photo was taken in the office after the bank meeting.

Jane, Angela and Kelly arrived first.

We were waiting in the lobby.

After all members arrived, we met the Hang Seng representative to handle our bank issue such as changing exco members, directors and signatures for cheque.

Observed some paintings on the wall.

We also took a group photo in the meeting room.

After the completion of all issues, many of us went back to work. Jane and Angela went to Aaron’s office for other HKSQ issues.

Advanced Class II for I Ching (易經高班II)–Lecture 4

I joined Prof. Pang’s (彭泓基教授) advanced class II for I Ching (易經高班) Lecture 4 which was held on 6^th Apr 2024 in the restaurant. Today’s topic was “Lao Tzu, I Ching and Tao Te Ching” (老子、《易經》與《道德經》).

Firstly, Prof. Pang mentioned the background of Laozi who lived in a troubled times in the Spring and Autumn Period (春秋亂世). Lao Tzu's "Natural Inaction" (自然無為) is to let the people have the greatest autonomy. Then he linked up Lao Tzu and the history of Chinese Culture, as well as, quoted Mr. Nan Huaijin’s (南懷瑾) metaphor:

– Confucianism is like a food store—spiritual food

– Buddhist statue department store—it contains the necessities of life

– Taoism is a pharmacy—most needed when you are sick

And then Prof. Pang briefed Lao Tzu's philosophical system that extended from cosmology to theory of life, then to politics and management.

After that Prof. Pang introduced the relationship between Lao Tzu (老子) and I Ching (易經). “Tao generates one (Qi-氣), one generates two (yin and yang-陰陽), two generates three (thing-物), and three generates all things (萬物). Lao Tzu was inspired by Yin and Yang from I Ching.

Prof. Pang wrote the word "qi" and said “In Taoism, Qi (氣) or Breath is very important. Breath is postnatal Qi (後天氣). Innate Qi (先天氣) is the combined Qi before Yin and Yang are judged.”

Finally, Prof. Pang discussed the Lao Tzu's philosophy including Tao (道)、Morality (德)、Rou (柔)、Nothing (無)、Anti (反) and Water (水).

He explained that Tao (道) is the laws of nature, the origin of all things.

Morality (德) is the implementation of Tao into our experience as a rule of our lives.

One of key concepts is “Do Nothing” (無為) that followed the nature of Tao and saints’ act.

Another key concept is “Water” (水) that water benefits all things without dispute.

Lastly, Prof. Pang introduced the structure of Taoist thought and explained people's misunderstandings about Lao Tzu.

At the end, Prof. Pang said Lao Tzu's philosophy become the essence of traditional Chinese culture and he quoted Nietzsche (尼采) that Lao Tzu's philosophy is like a well that never dries up and full of treasures.

After the class, classmates had lunch with Prof. Pang together. But I needed to go back to PolyU for teaching additional class after holiday. The class is both online and onsite modes so that only four students come onsite.

In that night, Minda and I had dinner in PolyU restaurant again.

Ching Ming Festival Activities – Remember Acn. Liu Yuanzhang and Prof. Cai Wen

Ching Ming is an occasion for Chinese families to remember their dead members by burning paper money and objects useful in the afterlife. Apart from family activity, I also attended the live broadcast to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of Academician Liu Yuanzhang (劉源張) on 4^th Apr 2024 afternoon. 紀念中國質量管理之父劉源張院士，逝世十週年「把最好的論文寫在企業𥚃」
