HKSQ & HKQAA Promotion Seminar on Feasibility Study on the Quality Start-up Development in HKSTP

HKSQ & HKQAA arranged the promotion seminar for the Trade and Industry Department (TID) Funded project named “Feasibility Study on the Quality of Hong Kong Start-up Development for Supporting the Sustainable Business Growth” on 29th Sep 2020 in HKSTP. Since COVID-19 pandemic, we performed both on-site and online seminar in this time. Group photo with guests was taken at the end of seminar.

(Left: Leo (beNovelty), Mr. Kevin Ho (HKTDC), I (HKSQ), Mr. Patrick Fan (CEO, beNovelty), Mr. Adams Wong (HKQAA) and Ms. Brenda Ling (HKQAA))

I (Chairman, HKSQ) was the first speaker to give welcoming address. In the beginning, I introduced the background and mission of Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ).

Then I briefed the story of project concept through assisting startups to achieve accreditation and certification when I served in Science Park.  So that I understand startup needs when faced to market.  That’s why we applied TID SME funding for enhancing startup quality management.

After that I mentioned our effort to discuss with different stakeholders before submission of funding application proposal. Finally, we got most stakeholders support and awarded TID SME Funding.

Mr. Adams Wong (Senior Business Manager, HKQAA) was the second speaker and he briefed the details of the TID project.

And then he mentioned some startup research from other countries and regions were performed and then described the process to achieve the SME Development Fund (SDF). Now the funding was renamed to Trade and Industrial Organization Support Fund (TSF).

After that Adams briefed the six key activities in the project and they are “Promotion Seminar”, “Startup Research Survey”, “Practical Guidebook for Startup”, “Sharing Seminars”, “10 Workshops” and “Dissemination”. Because of COVID-19 pandemic, the schedule of the project was extended the period to Nov 2021.

Mr. Anvil Ng (Assistant Director – Incubation & Acceleration Programmes, HKSTP) was the third speaker and he introduced incubation service under HKSTP.  Firstly, he briefed the background of Science Park and their mission “As your trusted growth platform in Asia, we support entrepreneurs along the whole journey, from zero to IPO, to commercialize and monetize your technologies and innovations.”

Then Mr. Ng used one slide to brief the whole programmes to support startup from idea to IPO.  Their approach was multiple programmes into one single platform that included STEP, INCU, LEAP, Alumni, Community members, etc.

Finally, Mr. Ng mentioned the flow from idea to incubate and then to accelerate & scale up through HKSTP programmes. Moreover, Global Acceleration Academy (GAA) and HKSTP Investment provided further support to startup ecosystem.

The fourth speaker was Mr. Kevin Ho (Manager, SME Relations, Product Promotion Department, HKTDC) and he introduced HKTDC’s startup promotions and events.

Mr. Ho briefed there were five steps to support startup as follows:

1.      Market Validation (Startup Zones in different Expo/Fair, Entrepreneur Day, etc.)

2.      Funding (support different Expo/Fair)

3.      Go-to-Market (Overseas events, “Think Asia, Think HK (TATHK)”)

4.      Development (Startup Express Programme)

5.      Community (HKStartupSociety)

Mr. Patrick Fan (CEO, beNovelty Limited) was the last speaker and he shared his experience on running startup with quality initiative. His concept was to standardize API into one platform named “OpenAPIHub”. Thus different function could establish different APIs and they could integrate each other easily like LEGO blocks.

He then briefed his time-to-market API business in four steps.  They helped API Providers on Connection, Monetization and Protection. On the other hand, they also helped API Consumers on Discovery, Onboarding and Analytics.

After that he shared his view on B2B startup. Mr. Fan said it was easy for consultancy and one time project in many startup. However, he met difficulty to go to the step on subscriptions & Licensing, and Strategic Partnership. Your company needed to have capability for scalable and standardization. Therefore, quality management system could help.

At the end, Patrick gave four tips and tricks to all startup below:

i)                    Quality is Day 1 activity

ii)                  Quality requires traceability

iii)                Quality needs endorsement

iv)                Quality takes continuous effort

Before the seminar, Minda and I visited the building 19W during lunch time.

I found that HKSTP has national incubator status.

Since the seminar was both online and offline, we needed to test completely before start.
