Launch Ceremony of CityUHK Alumni Lounge & CityU EngD Society Exco Meeting 2025

The Launch Ceremony of CityUHK Alumni Lounge was held in the CityU International Centre on 18^th Jan 2025. CityU EngD Society members had joined to support this event. We took a photo with Prof. Michael Yang.

Afterward, we held the 1^st CityU Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Society executive committee meeting.

Dr. Ray Kong discussed the new Engineering Society encouraged by College of Engineering. 

And then we discussed the coming 20^th anniversary event. I proposed two speakers and they were Prof. Andy Chun and Prof. Wong Kam Fai. 

After EngD exco meeting, Rocky team went to the CityU Eminence Society Spring Dinner 2025. 

Dr. Raymond Leung is the chairman of CES and gave welcome speech.

Many friends were participated the dinner.

CityU CSCI Mentorship Programme Kick-Off Ceremony of 2024-25

I was honor to be invited to be guest speaker in the College of Science (CSCI) Mentorship Programme Kick-Off Ceremony on 18^th Jan 2025. I met my mentee Mr. Alex Cheung we were both invited to share our mentor and mentee experience. 

Then we took a photo with Prof. Wang Xin (Dean, College of Science) for memory.

In the beginning, Prof. Wang Xin gave welcome speech to all participants including mentors and mentees. 

Then Prof. Daniel Ho (Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education), CSCI) introduced the mentorship programme and arranged this meeting face-to-face after COVID.

After introduced all mentors, I was the first speaker to share my mentor experience and my topic entitled “Connecting the Dots”. I shared my development in four categories included Academia, Business, Community and Government.

I connected all my activities and achievements together and one common starting point was in CityU. Finally, I encouraged students to record all their steps that were their digital footprint and personal brand.

Mr. Alex Cheung is the second speaker to share his experience in mentionship programme. He shared our meeting and what he had learnt in this programme.

He had very good experience during participation of TECH 300 program under my supervision and leadership. Although we were unsuccessful, Alex still learned a lot about business.

Lastly, he shared some tips for mentee including open-minded, proactive, to be contributor and record all your insights.

Dr. Ray Kong (VP, CityU EngD Society) also joined our ceremony and discussed with two new mentees Mr. ZHANG Zhihan and Mr. DENG Ruiqi. Both are students in the department of mathematics. 

After the sharing talks, we played ice-breaking game together.

At the end, we took a photo with Prof. Wang and Prof. Ho for memory. We then left for another meeting after the group photo.

COMP 5569 Guest talk for detecting fraud and money laundering activities

Dr. Walter Fung invited Mr. Tony Tse to share “Fraud, Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing – Implication for Society – Teaching and Research Opportunities” with his student in COMP 5569 – Fintech Regulation and Compliance on 17^th Jan 2025. We took a photo with Tony for memory. 

Mr. Tony Tse has left the Police force and working for business as related to cryptocurrency. And tonight’s talk entitled “What is an effective automated detection system to detect fraud and money laundering activities.” Firstly, Mr. Tse briefed financial institutions which spent millions to incorporate automated detection system (ADS) to detect suspicious activities within accounts.

Then he introduced some practices such as transaction monitoring.  Firstly we needed to understand clients’ portfolio. And then he briefed the history on use of legal persons and arrangements from 1980 to 2019. After 2019 COVID period, virtual banks were introduced.

After that we discussed large fund and fast movement between bank accounts and different locations (especially cross-border transaction). Dr. Walter Fung also gave comments on smurfing and structuring transactions.

“While an effective ADS should generate true positive alert, in reality many false-positive alert was generated.” Said by Tony. It included cash kitting / circular flow of fund and U turn transaction. Finally, he introduced some of the techniques used by criminals to bypass this automated detection system.

Loan Fraud / Bankruptcy Fraud were also discussed.

Lastly, he explained the mechanism of e-shopping fraud.  Dr. Walter Fung developed this course is very useful and meaningful!

Advanced Class IV for I Ching (易經高班IV)–Lecture 6

Minda and I attended Prof. Pang’s (彭泓基教授) advanced class IV for I Ching (易經高班 IV) (6A class) the last lecture which was held on 11^th Jan 2025. The venue is Prof. Pang’s club house. We had breakfast in the Kowloon station and then took a photo in front of the Peacock sculpture.

In the beginning, Prof. Pang continued the logical reasoning of Eight Characters for Destiny (八字命理).

Today lecture was one hour early and very cool, many classmates attended online.

And then Prof. Pang reviewed Eight Characters for Destiny (八字命理) and Ten Gods (十神).

He explained how to use the relationship of five elements complement each other (五行相生相剋).

After that we employed the Eight Characters Apps to generate the fundamental horoscope (命盤). 

We needed to consider your belongings (命主屬性) and the strength or weak of body (身強/身弱). Some basic rules were mentioned.

Finally, Prof. Pang further explained the relationship of five elements complement each other (五行相生相剋) using your belongings (命主屬性).

Then he calculated the level of affection power.

I also asked a question about Ten Gods (十神) in Day element (日元) based on Heavenly stem (天干) and he replied that depended on Moon and Year elements (月元和年元). 

The next topic was Divination (佔卜) using chess and named “Lingqijing” (靈棋經).

Prof. Pang briefed the meaning of divination that gave indication to people.

There are 12 chesses with 4x UP, 4x MIDDLE and 4x LOW.

After throwing, count the face up one and search the “Lingqijing” to get the hexagram (卦).

Completed the last lecture, we had lunch together for coming Chinese New Year.

We had totally 20 classmates with Prof. Pang for lunch!
