HKCTC Seminar on the Latest Development in Construction Material Testing, Inspection and Certification

The Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification (HKCTC) and Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) co-organized a seminar named “Latest Development in Construction Material Testing, Inspection and Certification” held on 26^th Jan 2018.  In recent years, infrastructure and construction projects in Hong Kong are being carried out in full swing.  Product certificate schemes for a wide range of construction materials have been developed to help safeguard the quality of construction materials.  In the beginning, all guest speakers and organizers took a group photo.

The first speaker was Ir. Prof. Philip Chung (Deputy Head of Geotechnical Engineering Office (Planning and Standards); Hon. Professor, Department of Earth Sciences, HKU) and his presentation entitled “Testing of Cores taken from Cement Stabilised Soil”.  

Firstly, he introduced what was deep mixing that was a technique of mixing chemical binder (cement/lime) with soil to improve the engineering properties of the soil.  (In diagram – Improved ground area).  There are three mechanism of Deep Cement Mixing (DCM) to improve consistency and increase strength below.

-          Ion exchange at the surface of clay minerals

-          Bonding of soil particles

-          Filling of void spaces by chemical reaction products.

Startup Meeting with Cyberport

I represented HKSTP Quality Startup scheme arranged another meeting with HKQAA and Cyberport on 26^th Jan 2018.  This meeting aimed to continue our cooperation in HKQAA Hong Kong Registration – Startups and discussed new cooperation on Startup Directory, Charter and Research.  Before the meeting, we took a group photo for memory.

We discussed the following items.

i)                    Established a platform for startup recognition for procurement and investment

ii)                  Link both “Buy Side” and “Startup” and reduce the gap and create value in the platform

iii)                Research Project on Startup – seek Cyberport to be one of supporting organizations.

iv)                Cooperation to some activates such as seminar and coaching in Smart-Space.

During the meeting, we knew the most updating development plan of Cyberport and we aimed to co-create values for startup ecosystem.

CityU Digital Business Innovation Festival 2018

I received invitation from CUBIC for Opening Ceremony and the forums of the CityU Digital Business Innovation Festival organized by the MBA Programme of College of Business.  Opening Ceremony with theme named “Bridging Education, Technology, and Business” was held on 23^rd Jan 2018.  The progression of our society bases around the three key areas of Education, Business and Technology.  Before the ceremony, I met friends of CityU Eminence Society – Dr. David Chung and Dr. Wilson Chan and we took a photo for memory.

HKSQ Cultural Visit to Foshan Ceramics Museum

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) arranged a two-day technical visit to Foshan Coca Cola Plant and Ceramics Museum on 19^th & 20^th Jan 2018.  These technical visits would allow us to investigate both the technological and traditional approaches to production.  The first part is a tour of the Coca Cola Foshan Plant, and second part is a visit to Foshan Ceramics Museum - Ancient Nanfeng Kiln (南風古灶).  I would like to share the day 2 visit.  Foshan Ceramics Museum is in the famous ceramic capital of Shi Wan (石灣). It is the world’s biggest ceramics museum of human characters. We can appreciate and inquire about its long history of cultural heritage and workmanship.  I took a group photo in front of the Ancient Nanfeng Kiln (南風古灶)

HKSQ Technical Visit to Foshan Coca Cola Plant

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) arranged a two-day technical visit to Foshan Coca Cola Plant and Ceramics Museum on 19^th & 20^th Jan 2018.  These technical visits would allow us to investigate both the technological and traditional approaches to production.  The first part is a tour of the Coca Cola Foshan Plant, and second part is a visit to Foshan Ceramics Museum (南風古灶).  I would like to share the day 1 visit.  In 1978, the economic reform policy of China began to attract foreign enterprises to re-enter the vast markets in China. In 1979, Coca-Cola became one of the first international companies to re-establish her food and beverage business in China. In 2014, Coca Cola celebrated its 35 years of operation in China under the reform policy. So far, Coca Cola has 43 plants, 10 brands, and more than 50 flavors of different beverages to serve the vast population of China.

Our tour leader was Dr. Ivan Ng who arranged the first day of visit to Coca Cola.  

We started from Shenzhen and the travel time about 3 hours.

We had lunch first in Green Lake hotel.

HKQAA Seminar on ISO/FDIS 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System

Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA) organized the seminar named “ISO/FDIS 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System” on 18^th Jan 2018. The ISO 45001 OHSMS Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) was released on 30^th Nov 2017 and it was now set for the new standard to be published in the first quarter of 2018.  The seminar aimed to discuss how the “migration” from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001 and the major difference between these two standards.  Before the seminar, I took a photo with Dr. Nigel Croft my old quality friend who visited Hong Kong every year for HKQAA symposium and worked as guest speaker for different standards revision in specific years (See reference).

Dr. Nigel Croft (Chairman, ISO/TC 176/SC 2 (Quality Systems); Member, ISO Joint Technical Coordination Group (JTCG) and Associate Technical Director, HKQAA) was the guest speaker and his topic named “Introduction to the new ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management System Standard”.  In the beginning, he briefed the ISO mission that supported sustainable and equitable economic growth promote innovation and protect health, safety and the environment.  

He pointed out two of 17 goals of WHO sustainable development related to Quality, Safety and Environment.  Nigel added that dreaming of a sustainable future included “Economic Growth”, “Environmental Integrity” and “Social Responsibility”. 

HKETA Annual Dinner 2018

I (Chairman of HKSQ) were honor to be invited by Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman of HKSQ and Vice-Chairman of HKETA) to attend Hong Kong Electronics & Technologies Association (HKETA) Annual Dinner 2018 on 17 Jan 2018.  Since Aaron had business trip, Dr. Pat Cheung (TQM) was representative and we took a table group photo for memory.

In the beginning, Ir. Victor Ng (Immediate Past Chairman of HKETA) gave a welcome speech.

Dr. David Chung (Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology Bureau, HKSAR) was guest of honor and gave a speech to us.  He introduced different support schemes for Innovation and Technology development after the Policy Address launched on 11 Oct 2017.  The government would invest HK$18 billion into Innovation & Technology ecosystem.  Technology talent scheme such as “Postdoctoral Hub” was briefed and the maximum monthly allowance upto HK$32,000 for recruit postdoctoral researcher.

Startup Meeting with Hong Kong Startup Council and CityU

I represented HKSTP Quality Startup scheme arranged a meeting with HKQAA and Hong Kong Startup Council in Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) on 17^th Jan 2018.  This meeting aimed to continue our study on helping organization (included private and public) to purchase goods from startup under their existing procurement procedure or regulation.  It was follow-up actions after our meeting with EMSD and Startmeup on 20^th Dec 2017 and 10^th Jan 2018, respectively.  All participants took a group photo in FHKI hall for memory.

iii)                Cooperation between HKQAA and Hong Kong Q-Mark Council for food product from Mainland China to Hong Kong.

 During the meeting, we would like to maximize our resource utilization to help startup and industry development.  However, I suggested waiving Hong Kong Startup Council membership fee for incubatees in Science Park and Cyberport.

In afternoon, I had also arranged a lunch meeting with Dr. KS Chin (Associate Professor, SEEM Dept., CityU) with HKQAA team to discuss the submission of Research Project on Startup.

We discussed the roles of HKSQ, HKQAA and CityU, as well as supporting organizations included HKSTP, Cyberport, Hong Kong Startup Council and InvestHK, etc.

ISI Seminar on Design Thinking

The seminar entitled "Design Thinking" was co-organizer by Institute of Systematic Innovation Hong Kong (ISIHK), Hong Kong Quality Management Association (HKQMA) and Six Sigma Institute (SSI) on 15^th Jan 2018.  Design Thinking originally is about presentation of functions to their user and aesthetics is only part of design. It is first started at IDEO and then was popularized by the design school (d. school) of Stanford University which teaches of Design Thinking to people beyond the design profession.  The seminar aimed to discuss the basic concept and application of Design Thinking.  I took a photo with Mr. David Kwan for memory.

In the beginning, Dr. Frankie, K.S. LAM (Chairman, HKQMA) introduced the guest speaker Mr. David Kwan to us.  Mr. Kwan is an experience automation and mechanical system designer consultant and he is a MATRIZ Level 3 Triz specialist.  

Mr. David Kwan (Founding Director, ISIHK) introduced the concept of Design Thinking. He said he like the meaning of Design search from internet that “… a Rational Presentation of Function…”  Then he quoted David Kelly (1978) who started at IDEO about Design Thinking (Human-Centric Design) meant that “Apply the mentality of Designer to Solve Problems” (employing Designer’s thinking logic).  

Inno Space Visit cum Sharing on How Technology Can Revolutionize Traditional Industries

Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) established an “Inno Space” on 27 Oct 2017 to promote the translation of innovative and technological ideas into industrial designs or products, nurture a start-up culture in Hong Kong and support “re-industrialization”. The “Inno Space” would provide workspace and technical support to enable users to develop their innovative ideas into industrial design which may subsequently be translated into products though prototyping.  TecONE arranged Inno Space visit and sharing seminar on 12^th Jan 2018.  I took a photo in front of the Inno Space for memory.

In the beginning, Ms. Stephanie Huang (Centre Manager, Inno Space, Corporate Development of HKPC) gave a welcome speech and introduced Inno Space to us.

Mr. Chuck Fung (Senior Consultant, Smart Manufacturing & Materials, HKPC) was the speaker and his presentation entitled “Inno Space and Prototyping Technical Sharing”.  Firstly, he briefed some technology background and then shared three real cases employed HKPC technologies to assist industries.

Silk Road Seminar on the New Stage Developments in Uzbekistan

Silk Road Economic Development Research Center (SREDRC), One Belt One Road Research Institute (OBORRI) of Chu Hai College and Institute for Entrepreneurship (IfE), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University co-organized the seminar on the New Stage Developments in Uzbekistan on 10^th Jan 2018.  Uzbekistan has more than half of population in the Central Asia and thus has great potentials under the new economic reform and open door policy of the new President starting in late 2016. It is not only aspiring to the geo-economic hub in the Central Asia because of its oil and gas and great agricultural resources; it has been considered to be the coming geostrategic hub of the Central and of the Eurasian landmass as a whole.  This seminar introduced their economic revitalization that opens the window to Uzbekistan and to the Central Asia.  I took a photo with Dr CHAN Man Hung, Thomas (Director, One Belt One Road Research Institute) for memory.

I made a new Kazakhstan friend - Mr. Iskander Baitassov who is the Consul of the Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Hong Kong and Macau.

The first keynote speaker was Mr. Vladimir Norov (Director of the Institute for Strategic and Interregional Studies under the President of Uzbekistan, formerly Minister of Foreign Affairs and State Advisor to the President, Republic of Uzbekistan) and his topic named “The New Development Plans of Uzbekistan in the New Era”.  In the beginning, Mr. Norov introduced the history of Uzbekistan.  The founding of the Silk Road historians referred to the II century B.C. when Chinese ambassador Zhang Qian (張騫) visited the countries of Central Asia with a diplomatic mission. Then he briefed some goods of trade included Davani horses of Ferghana and Velvet.

HKQAA arranged a startup meeting with HKSTP Incubation Program and InvestHK - Startmeup on 10^th Jan 2018.  We aimed to understand the startup situation and to help organization (included private and public) to purchase goods from startup under their existing procurement procedure or regulation. We discussed the definition of startup so as to develop list of startup.  However, different organization (co-working space, incubator and accelerator) had different definition.  Then we shared HKSTP incubation program requirement.  Jayne and Stanley shared their startup survey methodology.  Bryan and Adams shared their registration scheme.

Finally, we would like to contact more stakeholders to consolidate our idea and then proposed to government such as ITB and OGCIO.

Technology Incubation Network (TIN) Inauguration 2018

Technology Incubation Network (TIN) Inauguration was held on 9^th Jan 2018 in Ideal Lab, HKSTP.  Many startup enterprisers were invited to join the TIN Inauguration 2018.  Mr. Albert Wong (CEO, HKSTP), Mr. Charles Mok (Legislative Councilor - IT) and Ir. Dr. Lo Wai Kwok (Legislative Councilor - Engineering) were invited to be guest speaker.

CityU Emerging Technologies Forum – Advances in Battery Technology

CityU Emerging Technologies Forums look to the future. Speakers from industry and research institutions are invited to talk about the latest government policies, technological trends, local and regional initiatives and product development strategies related to their sectors.  The 2^nd Forum named “Advances in Battery Technology” held in Innovation Centre, CityU on 5^th Jan 2018.  In the beginning, I took a photo with Mr. David AI (Director, KTO) (Centre Left) and Ms. YS Chow (Senior R&D Manager – Rechargeable Products, GP Batteries International Ltd.) Quality Improvement and Experience Sharing Convention 2017/18

I was honor to be invited by Mr. Albert Lo (System & Quality Development Manager, CLP) to attend the Quality Improvement and Experience Sharing Convention (QIESC) 2017-2018 on 3^rd Jan 2018.  The first QIESC was instituted in 1997 by 6 participating organizations.  With strong support from other organizations, the Convention has become an annual major quality event with participating organizations taking turns to host.  I signed the poster when I arrived.
