HKSQ Technical Visit to HKTDC

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) organized a technical visit to Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) Exhibition Service and Logistic Centre at Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate on 8th May 2015. American Society for Quality (ASQ-HK) was co-organized on this event. HKTDC’s Exhibition Service Department (ESD) as pioneer in the Exhibition field obtained Integrated Management System (IMS) included ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 since 2003. ESD provides design, management, construction, and support services to the exhibition pools for HKTDC exhibitions. ESD is organized into functions of Marketing, Design, Operation & Graphics, Inventory, Additional Facilities, etc.

We gathered at Tseung Kwan O MTR Station and took a bus (797M) to the Industrial Estate.


We arrived the Exhibition Services & Logistics Centre.


Mr. Harry Fung (Manager, Exhibition Services, HKTDC) briefed the history of HKTDC which established in 1987 and funded by Hong Kong Government (HK$63M and paid up in 2004). They had 51 permanent staff, 88 temporary staff and 100 workers.


ESD was the Hong Kong largest stand contractor and sufficient materials to build over 4000 booths of 9 square meter, 3000 tables and 10000 chairs of various types. They were the first stand contractor in Hong Kong obtained IMS certification (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001). The milestones was showed in following table.


Mr. Harry Fung said they had 4 achievements included “Containerization”(集中箱系統), “Centralized Vacuum System”(中央吸塵系統), “Sticker Delaminating Machine” (起板機) and “Panel Washing Machine”(洗板機). Mr. Fung showed a forex panel which could be recycled. Then he briefed some environmental friendly activities such as Booth curtain in PP instead of PVC in 2004; 100w tungsten light bulb changed to 23W energy saving lamp in 2008; and use recycle carpet in 2010.


The recycle bin was designed by them.


Before visit the Logistic Centre, Mr. Harry Fung concluded four opportunities for Exhibition Service included:
i) Fairs grow in scale
ii) Image upgrade
iii) Market share still low
iv) Packages sale popular
Lastly, he also mentioned four challenges below.
i) Space constraint
ii) Limited time for construction (e.g. 3 day move-in & ~30 Exhibitions per year)
iii) Growing political pressure on TDC’s competition
iv) Growing consciousness on environmental protection


We visited the Logistic Centre.


Mr. Harry Fung explained the secret for loading structure was the cap to fix the location of each layer.

We took a photo in front of the New High-pressure aluminum profile cleaning machine developed in 2012.

Centralized Vacuum System was mentioned to absorb all wood slashing for chemical spill use.


At the end, Dr. Aaron Tong (Former Chairman, HKSQ) presented a flag to Mr. Harry Fung for his kindly hospitality.
