Introduction of MSc in Environmental Science and Technology in CityU and Student visit to HKSTP Laboratories

A visit to Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) laboratories was arranged for CityU MSc Student who studied Master of Science / Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Science and Technology (MScEST) and Master of Science / Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Science and Technology with Environmental Health and Food Safety (MScEST)(EHFS) on 16 Nov 2013. I would like to introduce a history of the MScEST course which has first offered in 1995 and MScEST (EHFS) was approved in May 2007. In 2013, we decided to add "Quality Management for Quality" which organized by HKSQ and BCH, CityU since 2005 (see reference) into core courses of MScEST / MScEST (EHFS) and renamed as "BCH 6116: Quality and Environment Management for Laboratory". The course included management systems (e.g. QMS, EMS and OHSAS), Calibration and Uncertainty Measurement, Laboratory Workshop as well as, Technical Visit. I would like to share some photos for the courses, lab work and visit below.

We had discussed the syllabus during the Workshop on MScEST Programme on 11 July 2012.

One of lectures taught by Prof. Micheal Lam.

I taught all lectures and demonstrated the laboratory workshops.

Mr. Chan was responsible to demonstrate how to operate the ICP for chemical analysis.

The visit was held on 16th Nov 2013. It included to visit different laboratories such as Probe and Test Development Centre (PTDC), Reliability Laboratory (RL), Wireless Communications Test Laboratory (WCTL), Biotechnology Support Laboratory (BSL) and Building Green 18. I had explained some technology about Reliability Stress Test Service included High/Low Temperature Operating Life Test (HTOL/LTOL), Temperature and Humidity Test, Temperature Cycle Test (Air-to-Air), Autoclave Test / Pressure Cooker Test, Highly Accelerated Stress Test (HAST) and Moisture Sensitivity Level, etc.

Some photos were taken for memory below:

In PTDC, I explained the IC and wafer testing procedures and equipment used.

Some students took a photo in front of the Biotech SME Centre.

After that they visit the Charles K. Kao Auditorium (Golden Egg) of HKSTP. Since it had a seminar so we took a group photo in front of the Auditorium entry for memory.

At the end of this visit, we visited Building Green 18. We separated into two group that one group stayed in group floor for briefing the principles and the other group I led to visit the roof garden which was for the environmental related building design. It had a small garden for company staff farming.

First group in the floor

Second group in the roof garden

The following photos demonstrated the progress of HKSTP Phase III development.
