Seminar Celebrating the WMD, the WAD and the WSD 2015

The Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification (HKCTC), the Standards and Calibration Laboratory of the Innovation and Technology Commission (SCL), Government Laboratory (GL), Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) and Product Standards Information Bureau (PSIB) jointly organized the 2015 Seminar for celebrating the World Metrology Day (WMD), the World Accreditation Day (WAD) and the World Standards Day (WSD) on 29 May 2015. Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) was one of supporting organizations. This seminar aimed to raise the particpants’ awareness of the importance of metrology, accreditation and standards, and how they collectively contribute to maintain confidence in goods and services; to enhance competitiveness; and to foster innovation.


Our former chairman Mr. Karson Chui represented us to attend this seminar. Please previous seminars were recorded in reference.

This year’s themes for the World Metrology Day (WMD), World Accreditation Day and World Standards Day (WSD) are:

HKSQ Technical Visit to ActiveCarePharmacy Medication Management Centre

Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) organized a technical visit to ActiveCarePharmacy Medication Management Centre (ACP MMC) at Fo Tan on 28th May 2015. American Society for Quality (ASQ-HK) was co-organized on this event. ACP MMC is a setting unique in Hong Kong in providing medication management for the elderly and also mentally challenged people living in long term care institutions. To enhance medication administration, ACP has also developed an iPad based App to ensure the right drugs are given to the right patient at the right time in an effective manner. ACP MMC’s operation is ISO9001:2008 certified, and has gained recognition by the Social Welfare Department to provide weekly packs of medicine to old age homes. The Centre’s work has become the first and only pharmacy to have received a grant from the Trade and Industrial Department, won a special mention at the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2013, and also bought its chief pharmacist the Leadership in Pharmacy Award by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 2013.

In the beginning, Mr. Peter SUEN (Pharmacist & Owner, ACP MMC) introduced their service vision and experience of running ACP MMC. Firstly, he presented that they were Community Pharmacists to provide a peace of mind to medication management in old age home. He introduced that Medicine field had two types of theories included Evident-based and Clinical-based medicine. Hardware of ACP MMC was SOP and ISO 9001 QMS and Software of ACP MMC was knowledge of pharmacist (professional experience and judgement).


Some background information had been shared such as 60-75% of elderly were healthy and around 25-35% under chronically ill, as well as, 2-10% were unstable disability. In hospital, about 20% of emergency room patients were medicine incidents. Moreover, Mr. Suen said Hong Kong had 1 million elder people but there were only 75k quota of old age home. It predicted that there had 2.5 million elder people in Hong Kong after 15 years. We faced a great problem that we need to change the service in order to avoid mis-medicine by-product which hurt elders.


Mr. Suen quoted Dalai Lama and Mahatma Gandhi that “Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.” and “We muct become the change we want to see.” respectively. Mr. Suen said one of key problems were lack of manpower in old age home (e.g. Nurse). It is because of career path and work nature. He also mentioned that nurse had only 16hr for training about medicine and it was obviously not enough.


After overcome many difficulty, Mr. Suen established ACP MMC through self-owned property and registered premises. Since 2008, they had tailor-made elder home system (Hardware and Software) for medication management in Hong Kong. The sample was showed below.



Finally, Mr. Suen introduced their professional work included Medication Reconciliation, Review and Drug Stability. They found that most of drug was stable within 3 week in Hong Kong (under high humidity environment). He added all professional work must be carried out by the professional BEFORE drug administration. Their duty is to prevent mistakes! Moreover, they followed the “Practice Guidelines on the Provision of Dose Administration Aid Service by Community Pharmacists for Use in Residential Care Facilities in Hong Kong” by The Pharmaceutical Society of Hong Kong. He also quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson that “Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” They developed ID device using RFID for elders.


At the end of presentation, Mr. Suen told us his vision was developed “Dispensing Robot” to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency. Ms. Minda Chiang (Hon. Secretary, HKSQ) presented a flag to Mr. Peter Suen for his kindly hospitality and sharing.


We visited the production line in next floor.


We observed the different procedures from getting medicine through hospital or clinic and then separation within different package, prioritizing the sequence and packaging the drug, etc.





After the visit, Ms. Wendy MUI (Managing Director, ACP MMC) demonstrated how to distribute drugs to patient through the video in which also demonstrate the iPad application for identification of patient and recording the drug administration.

Meeting with CityU President and HeathBaby Group for Potential Collaboration

I am honor to be a facilitator to organize a meeting between HeathBaby Group and the School of Veterinary Medicine, City University of Hong Kong on 28 May 2015. HeathBaby Hong Kong Biotech Limited is located in Science Park and I knew their head court in Taiwan to have animal vaccine company, so that I try to link up the School of Veterinary Medicine in CityU with HeathBaby Group in Taiwan through the meeting with CityU President – Prof. Way Kuo for potential collaboration.

The representatives of HeathBaby Group are Mr. Chang Hsiu Kang (Chairman / Pharmacist, HeathBaby Group) (Right), Ms. Circle Yuen (COO, HeathBaby Hong Kong Biotech Limited) (Middle) and Dr. Frank C.J. Chang (Assistant Manager, R&D, Reber Genetics Co., Ltd.) (Left).


Firstly, we met President and introduced both HeathBaby Group and the university background respectively.


After that we went to the office of the School of Veterinary Medicine and met Dr. Brown Richard Arthur Llewellyn (Associate Director (Production Animal) Professional Veterinary Education and Development) and Dr. Ng Lip Tet (Visiting Fellow). Since time is limited, we then visit the laboratory in the Department of Biology and Chemistry (BCH). Dr. Y.W. Lam (Associate Professor, BCH) demonstrated their facility and research on Stem Cell.


HeathBaby Hong Kong Biotech Limited would have some research projects which collaboration with Dr. Y.W. Lam about stem cell soon.

After the visit, we had lunch with Prof. Way Kuo (President, CityU) in City Chinese Restaurant.

Since the animal vaccine related the basic research of biomedical, so we further discussed with Prof. Michael M. Yang (Head, Department of Biomedical Sciences; Chair Professor of Chemistry and Biomedical Sciences) and his team after the lunch. MA TRIZ Certification Level 2 Training (Part 2)

I attended MA TRIZ Certification Level 2 Training on 18, 19, 25 & 26 May 2015 which organized by Institute of Systematic Innovation, Hong Kong from 9:00am to 9:00pm and instructed by Prof. D. Daniel Sheu. I would like to summarize my study below for sharing.

Prof. D. Daniel Sheu briefed the course outline and he said the original course duration was 5 day. We concentrated into 4 days and elements as follows.

Day 3 (25 May 2015)
In the beginning, Prof. Sheu helped us to review some items in which we did not fully understand such as Physical Contradiction about “Separation in Relation” and the window, which allowed air penetration but block of sun light, was employed as example. After that the algorithm of ARIZ was explained.


ARIZ stands for “Algorithm for Inventive Problem Solving” which was developed by Altshuller. There are many generations included ARIZ-61, ARIZ-64, ARIZ-69, ARIZ-71, ARIZ-75, ARIZ-77 and ARIZ-85 (the last and stable version). The following diagram showed the two direction led by ARIZ. The first direction is like a converging funnel which transforms from unclear and fuzzy initial engineering situation to a very well-defined model of the problem (e.g. Physical Contradiction). The second direction is like a diverging funnel which expanded from limited resources to more resources.


The Algorithm of ARIZ has three main categories with nine parts. Each part consists of many sub-steps.


Cat. I – Restructuring the Original Problem
Part 0. Problem Descriptions & Identification
0.1 Project Statement (Project Title, Descriptions and Picture/Diagram of the system)
0.2 Function Analysis for the System (the bigger picture)

1.0 Analyze the System
1.1 ID the main function of the problematic system and list major parts (in system & super-system)
Identify Mini-Problem included Engineering Contradiction (EC-1) and (EC-2) in opposition.
The Mini-Problem statement is showed as follow.
It is necessary to __________ with minimal changes to the system. (Combining the good of EC-1 and EC-2)
1.2 To define the tool and the product. (Reformulate the ECs into Su-Field models of the conflict)
1.3 Graphic presentation of EC-1 and EC-2
1.4 To choose a basic contradiction and its graphic interpretation. (Usually use EC-1)
1.5 The aggravated (intensified) basic contradiction (e.g. perfectly, totally, completely, etc.)
1.6 Define Problem Model using Intensified Mini Problem:
It is necessary to introduce an X-element that eliminates [any harmful consequence] and enables [the tool to deliver the main function perfectly] with minimal change to the system

2.0 Analyze the Resources
Part 2 focuses on the analysis of the resources that are available such as resources of space, time, substances and fields.
2.1 To define the operating zone (OZ) (the space where there is a conflict)
OZ1: OZ of useful function
OZ2: OZ of the negative function
Identify OZ1 & OZ2 overlapping or not.
2.2 To analyze the operating time (OT)
OT1: OT of useful function
OT2: OT of negative function
Identify OT1 & OT2 overlapping or not
2.3 To analyze resources of substances and fields (SFR)
2.3.1 SFR of the system in the OZ:
Tool/Product -----Substance-----Parameters-----Fields
ID the 3rd component in the conflict situation, if any
Other SFR within OZ (Substance-----Parameters-----Fields)
2.3.2 SFR outside of OZ or Wastes, by-product, secondary resources:

3.0 Define the Ideal Final Result and Formulate the Physical Contradiction
3.1 To define IFR-1 using the following pattern:
X-element eliminates the (harmful action) and allows (to deliver the main function of the system) in the operating space/zone (specify) during the operation time (specify) without compromise*.
[*without compromise – without making the system more complex and without any harmful consequences]
3.2 Formulate the Re-enforce Ideal Final Results with X-element substitute by SFR.
(X-element) itself eliminates the (Harmful action) and allow (Useful Action) in the (Operating Zone) during the (Operating Time) without compromise.
3.3 To define the physical contradiction (PC) on marco-level and micro-level.
The parameter (specify) of the resource (specify) should be value 1 (specify) to eliminate the harmful action (specify) and should be value 2 (specify) to provide the useful function (specify).
Then it needs to identify the Type such as Physical Contradiction (PC); No Conflict (NC) and Irrelevant Parameter (IR).

Prof. Sheu said the part 1 to 3 were essence in MATRIZ Level 2 and summarized in the following diagram. Other parts would be studied in MATRIZ Level 3.

4.0 Resolve the Physical Contradiction
5.0 Apply the Knowledge Base: Effects, Standards (76), and Principles (40).
6.0 Change the Mini-Problem
Cat. III – Analyzing the Solution
7.0 Review the Solution and Analyze Removal of the Physical Contradiction
8.0 Develop Maximum Usage of the Solution
9.0 Review all the Stages in ARIZ in a “Real Time” Application
After Day 3 course, we have dinner with Prof. Sheu in CityU again.


Day 4 (26 May 2015)
Prof. Sheu reviewed the exercise about ARIZ and then introduced S-Curve Analysis for us.


Firstly, Prof. Sheu explained the Trend of S-Curve Evolution. The y-axis of S-Curve is Main Parameter of Value (MPV) and the x-axis is time. MPV is key attribute / outcome of a product / service that is important to the purchase decision process. So the Innovation could be aslo defined as “Significant improvement along at least one MPV”.
1st Stage: The engineering system is “born” when the principle of action is first applied to deliver tis main function.
Transitional Stage: At this stage, the engineering system tries to enter the market which is survival of fitness.
2nd Stage: MPVs improve rapidly and production volume grows. It is a very dynamic stage.
3rd Stage: Engineering system development slows enormously, despite increased efforts.
4th Stage: Engineering system functionality and revenue decline.


After that Prof. Sheu stated S-Curve Analysis (SCA) approach through different TRIZ tools as the following diagram. (Some tools would teach in Level 3 course.)


The “Functional Potential / Cost” Ratio of S-Curve in different stages were discussed. The ratio explained the change of functionality and cost of product in each stage and it used as market strategy.


Finally, the process of SCA was introduced and we would use the following process to examine the stage of Engineering System / Product in its S-Curve.


After that we took an examination. Dr. Michael Li was also our proctor.


Finished the examination, we took a group photo and then we have dinner together.




The MATRIZ Level 3 usually organized in Taiwan for 9 days!!

MA TRIZ Certification Level 2 Training (Part 1)

I attended MA TRIZ Certification Level 2 Training on 18, 19, 25 & 26 May 2015 which organized by Institute of Systematic Innovation, Hong Kong from 9:00am to 9:00pm and instructed by Prof. D. Daniel Sheu. I would like to summarize my study below for sharing.

Dr. Michael YH Li (Certified TRIZ Specialist, MA TRIZ Level 3) introduced our trainer Prof. D. Daniel Sheu (Certified TRIZ Specialist, MA TRIZ Level 4) and some logistics arrangement.


Then Prof. D. Daniel Sheu briefed the course outline and he said the original course duration was 5 day. We concentrated into 4 days and elements as follows.

Day 1 (18 May 2015)
In the beginning, Prof. Sheu briefed the hierarchical view of TRIZ from Philosophy to Methodology/Process and Tools. Then he reviewed the 5 Pillars of TRIZ included “Ideality”, “Resources”, “Functionality”, “Contradiction” and “Space/time/interface (Domain)”.


Prof. Sheu introduced that TRIZ++ (like C++) was improved from TRIZ contain ~30 tools and synergized which was sub-set of Systematic Innovation (SI) where contained ~200 tools and not coordinated; moreover, SI was also sub-set of Innovation Methods. The application of TRIZ++ included:
i) Identifying Innovative Products & Services
ii) Solving Engineering Problems (TRIZ)
iii) Management / Service Applications such as Innovation Strategies and solving organization conflicts
iv) Combine with other tools to solve problem such as QFD, FMEA, Six Sigma, Lean, etc.
He also added TRIZ had a number of tools to help us to break our Psychological Inertia.
The following diagram demonstrated the Model of Problem (Red color bar) to Model of Solution (Green color bar) which was the TRIZ Model of Problem Solving that “Like Problem, Like Solutions”.


Then Prof. Sheu mentioned 8 stages of systematic Process of Systematic Innovation below.
i) Opportunities Exploration and Identification
ii) Opportunities Selection
iii) Problems Identification
iv) Problems Selection
v) Solutions Generation
vi) Solutions Selection
vii) Project (Engineering Design, Manufacturing, Sales, usage & Reverse Logistics)
viii) ApplicationsExploration

Prof. Sheu also reviewed Function Analysis (FA) and discussed the useful and harmful (H) functions. The Ranks included Basic (Function point to target), Addition (Ad - Outside component) and Auxiliary (Ax - Point to component within system). He also introduced the Human Perceived Level (HL) against Component Perceived Level (CL), where HL was easier to understand for laymen and CL was better for problem identification and solving. It was because CL was micro level investigation to break-up into more details narrowing down the scope and easier to find that someone somewhere had already solve similar problems. Albert Einstein’s saying was quoted that “If I had one hour to save the world, I would spend 55 minutes defining & analyzing the problem and only 5 minutes finding the solution.”


After that Prof. Sheu introduced his developed Cause-Effect & Contradiction Chain Analysis (CECCA), which added Contradiction into Cause-Effect & Chain Analysis (CECA). It was found more useful to identify the Engineering/Technical Contradiction and Physical Contradiction. Where “A” stand for “And”, “O” means “Or” and “C” was “Combined”; “+” was advantage, “-” was disadvantage and “x” was non-changeable cause within current capability or project.


“Chains of Disadvantages in a System” was used to find the critical key disadvantage from the surface disadvantages. Once solved the critical key disadvantage, others were also eliminated. If you were not able to solve the critical key disadvantage, you could solve upper level of disadvantages until the target disadvantages were solved.


Physical Contradictions were reviewed and I found that methods of separation included Space, Time (or Condition), Relation and System Level were same as Level 1 but Separation between Parameters was new in Level 2. Moreover, we learnt Transition to Super-system and Sub-system. Two more systems were introduced and they were Transition to Alternative System and Negative System. The corresponding Inventive Principles were showed in the following tables.



I also found there were two more rules when we reviewed the Trimming Process compared with Level 1 study (Only Rule A, B, C & X). The priority of trimming rules was showed as follows:
i) Rule A (Remove object of function)
ii) Rule X (Make function not needed)
iii) Rule B (Make object self-serve)
iv) Rule C (Find an existing carrier to replace the carrier to be trimmed)
v) Rule D (Find a new market for degraded system)
vi) Rule E (Improve performance and/or reduce cost by alternative part.)

The last part of day 1 was Feature Transfer that was defined as “Feature Transfer is an analytical tool for improvement of the Base Engineering System by transferring relevant features from the Alternative Engineering system. Base system was selected because it was simple and less expensive. The alternative system was perceived to be better feature. There were two ways of Feature Transfer below:
i) Transfer the component(s) which were responsible for the desirable feature.
ii) Transfer only the features (attributes) not the components.

Finally, we separated into different team and done the exercise as well as performed the presentation.



Day 2 (19 May 2015)
In the beginning, Prof. Sheu showed a video about robotic to help elder walking and people to load heavy goods. And then Prof. Sheu briefed the Patent/Knowledge Search.


Prof. Sheu started the Part II of MATRIZ Level 2 course and introduced one of 5 pillars named “Resources”. Resources in TRIZ were defined as “Anything in or around the system (e.g. Substance, Fields, Atributes/Parameters, Time and Space) not being used to its maximum advantage including the harmful things. Two key concepts are “Turning waste to Wonderful (W2W)” and “Turning Harm to Help (H2H)”.


Then Prof. Sheu briefed the problem solving process and started from problem definition, Function Analysis and the last 2nd step was Resource Searching. We needed to identify the function required for success through “Function/Attribute/Value Comparison”. Firstly, we asked the Resource Questions such as “How to make Resource (R) perform Effect (E)?” or “How to make Resource (R) provide Function (F) / Attribute (A)?” in the Resources Searching Table. After identified relevant attributes, value range of it and available resource, then we formed the matching table for resource.


Prof. Sheu also demonstrated how to match function/effect to resources through “TRIZ Effect Database”. Our function demanded to move liquid/gas (http://www.triz.co.uk/cp12.php)


The second part was to introduce Su-Field Analysis. Su-Field stands for Substance-Field and means a system formed by the interaction of Substances and Fields in the engineering system.
There were several approaches of using Su-Field Analysis and Standards below:
- Belski’s Approach and exercises
- Altshuller’s 76 standards and exercises
- Mann’s of S-Field classifications
- Victor Fey process


There were three types of Field and showed as follows.


Belski’s approach was structure approach with 8 fields. The interactions in each field were showed in the following table. The 5 steps of Su-Field Analysis were:
i) List all the substances involved. (Component Analysis)
ii) Draw the model of the situation, identify the Conflict Triads. (Model of Problem)
iii) Formulate problem-specific model solutions for each conflict triad. (Model of Solution)
iv) Translate the model solutions into ideas by means of the field of MATCEMIB
v) Combine the ideas into concepts and choose the best practical solution. (Specific Solution)


In addition, Prof. Sheu introduced Belski’s 5 Rules and added one more as Rule 0 below.
Rule 0 – If the problem SF model an incomplete SF model, add missing substance and/or field to make the SF model complete.
Rule 1 – Replace substance S2 by new S3, and generate a new field F2.
Rule 2 – Add an extra substance S3, and generate a new field F2 which interacts S2.
Rule 3 – Add an extra substance S3, and generate a new field F2 which interacts S1.
Rule 4 – Add an extra substance S3 between S1 and S2, and the new S3 generates a new field F2.
Rule 5 – Add an extra field F2 between S1 and S2.


Then we done several exercises and I presented one of them using Su-Field Analysis to solve a problem.


Prof. Sheu briefed another classification based on Mann’s Approach and we found that it could be used together with Belski’s approach together.


Finally, Prof. Sheu explained the original Altshuller’s 76 Inventive Standards and introduced a clear explanation website from Korea at http://triz.co.kr/TRIZ/frame.html .


Dr. Victor Lo and I had dinner with Prof. Sheu in CityU in that night.
