CQI Webinar - Risks ain't wot they used t'be

CQI Webinar named “Risks ain't wot they used t'be: a songbook for quality professionals in the return-to-work” was held on 14^th July 2020. The title “Risks are not what they used to be” is very meaningful under COVID-19. Songbook for QP that I think it probably refer to an old song named “Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be”.

There are three speakers and they were Ms. Estelle Clark, Mr. Rashad Issa and Mr. Emmanuel Lazaridis.

Mr. Emmanuel Lazaridis was the first speaker and he briefed the composing in their songbook included LinkedIn articles, need systematized approaches to recovery, and return to work risks (r2wr). Then he introduced three phases of return to work including “Resumption”, “Recovery” and “Rebuilding”. They are context of crisis.

Return to work is a process.

Phase I: Resumption means to get back to the workplace and focused on physical safety (e.g. social distance).

Phase II: Recovery means to get back to business and led to greater resilience.

Phase III: Rebuilding leads to greater sustainability and building better systems.

Mr. Lazaridis mentioned “risks during crisis are not the same risks”. Then he briefed r2wr assessment framework in resilience (Phase II) and sustainability (Phase III)

Ms. Estelle Clark was second speaker and she stated quality professionals are central to risk management. She introduced ISO 31000:2018 Risk management principles and guideline.

Then Mr. Rashad Issa performed a polling to the participants (total 125 replied) that 23% of QP involved as core member of crisis leadership team and 29% of QP consulted by CLT but not member of CLT.

It indicated that quality should still be at the centre of the company but it extended to resilience and sustainability.

Ms. Clark mentioned risk changed customer expectations and risk from supply chain when relaxation of external controls such as uberisk that disruption across the chain and culture.

Finally, she said QPs should be central and involved in crisis leadership team.

Mr. Emmanuel Lazaridis joined and discussed systems and behavior to handle this risk.

He discussed about organizational culture assessment using “Culture-in-a-Crisis Survey URL”.

Lastly, Q&A session for three speakers. For example, SME due with this kind of risk. Ms. Clark said three questions should be understood first and they were “What customer need you to do tomorrow?”, “What stuff you need to do today?” and “What you supply yesterday?” At the end, Mr. Alexander Woods gave a round up.

HKIE – Hong Kong Electronics Symposium 2020 (Virtual Symposium)

Hong Kong Electronics Symposium 2020 is organized by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers - Electronics Division and performed virtually on 13^th July 2020. This year the theme is “Embracing Smart City with IoT”.

In the beginning, Ir. CK Lee (Chairman, HKIE Electronics Division) gave a welcome speech.

Then Ir. Ringo Yu (Immediate Past President, HKIE) gave an opening speech.

The first keynote speech was Mr. Sanda Cheuk (Deputy Director-General (Telecommunications) OFCA, HKSAR Government) and his topic entitled “A Regulator’s Perspective on development of IoT in Hong Kong”.

Firstly, he overviewed Hong Kong’s Telecommunications.

Then he briefed the facilitating development of IoT since March 2015 to May 2020 that opening for application and subsidy scheme for 5G.

Mr. Nigel Chan (Customer CTO, Customer Operation Taiwan/HK/Macau, Nokia Solutions and Networks Taiwan) and his presentation named “Enabling smart, safe and sustainable cities with 5G”. Firstly, Mr. Nigel Chan reviewed the development journey of 5G from 2008 to 2020.

Then he briefed the 5G use cases compared to 4G.

HKQF 2020-2021 Award Scheme for Learning Experiences for TIC

The meeting for 2020-2021 Award Scheme for Learning Experience (ASLE) for Testing, Inspection & Certification Industry (TIC-ITAC) under Hong Kong Qualification Framework (HKQF) was held on 9^th July 2020. Four members in TIC-ITAC and HKQF secretary members are assigned as award panel for candidate interview to evaluation their continuous education under HKQF course and effect on their career life. We took the group photo after the meeting.

The aims of ASLE is to encourage outstanding or emerging practitioners to engage in learning activities in different places with a view to broadening their horizons and developing network with local and overseas industry partners within or outside Hong Kong. It has started since 2013 (Ref. 20130804)

In 2015, 3 awardees attended ANQ Congress 2015 in Taipei.

All awardees are responsible to promote HKQF after conference such as career talk in secondary school. In 2016, Ms. Kathy Choi shared her award experience under HKQF arrangement.

After 7 years promotion, it observed candidates have increased HKQF awareness.

HKSQ & HKQAA Promotion Seminar on Feasibility Study on the Quality Start-up Development

HKSQ & HKQAA arranged the promotion seminar for the Trade and Industry Department (TID) Funded project named “Feasibility Study on the Quality of Hong Kong Start-up Development for Supporting the Sustainable Business Growth” on 8^th July 2020 in Cyberport. Group photo was taken in the beginning.

I met two CityU junior classmates Ms. Tracy Lai (Project Coordinator-Global, ESG Matters Limited) (Who graduated in BCH, CityU) and Ms. May Lit (Senior ESG Coordinator, ESG Matters Limited) (Who graduated in Env Policy, CityU)

Then we chatted in the meeting room.

Ms. Brenda Ling (HKQAA) was MC today.

I (Chairman, HKSQ) was the first speaker to give welcoming address and introduced the original concept of this research project to startup. The seat arrangement in the room considered the social distance under COVID-19 pandemic.

Firstly, I introduced the background of Hong Kong Society for Quality (HKSQ) that we have established since 1986. Our mission is aligned with this research project to enhance the startup quality management and sustainable development.

Then I briefed the past success cases that I assisted startups to achieve accreditation and certification when I served in Science Park. So that I knew the problem startup faced when they growth and ready to go to market. That’s why I proposed to HKSQ to apply TID SME funding for enhancing startup quality management.

The second speaker was Mr. Adams Wong (Senior Business Manager, HKQAA) and he briefed the details of the project which we proposed to TID.

Huawei – Asia Pacific Aviation Forum 2020 (Online)

Asia Pacific Aviation Forum 2020 was organized by Huawei on 2^nd July 2020. In the era of 5G and AI, innovations in the aviation industry will transform operational efficiency. Therefore, Huawei arranged this online forum with the title named “AI & 5G Rebooting Aviation”.

The first speaker was Mr. Lee Yiang Ming (CIO, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad) and his topic entitled “Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad's Digitalization Journey”. They would like to enhance airport efficiency and applied very high concentration on AI such as facial recognition, CCTV, space security, etc.

The second speaker was Mr. Alan Newbold (Director, Arup Global Digital Aviation Leader) and his presentation named “Digitalization of Aviation”. He share his experience that led many projects in aviation especially on digitalization of airports and assisted them to re-start after this fall under post Covid-19 pandemic.

今天是香港回歸第23年，《中華人民共和國香港特別行政區維護國家安全法》（《港區國安法》）在六月三十日刊憲公布，即日晚上11時生效。因大部分香港市民對新中國及中國共產黨歷史不認識而產業恐懼，本人發現國內的一部動畫能作簡單介紹的中國近代史，名為《那年那兔那些事》由第一季至第五季，在Youtube內播放。這是一部2011年6月開始在「超級大本營」論壇「軍事暢談」版塊上連載的網絡漫畫。以趣味的方式描繪了中華人民共和國的發展（特別是軍事發展）及內政外交歷史。作者為中國大陸網友「逆光飛行」（真名「林超」）。
