The second COMP retreat in 2025 was held from 18 to 20
Jun 2025. This time included the PolyU COMP – HKUST (GZ) INFH Research Student
Conference on 19 Jun 2025. The theme is “The Future in an AI-Driven World”. In
the beginning, Prof. Andy Chun and I took a photo for memory.
Many colleagues arrived and prepared the meeting.
In the beginning, Prof. Li Qing (Head of COMP) gave
opening speech, welcome the new staffs and reported the departmental
achievement.
Then Dr. Hong Va Leong introduced the new COMP teaching
and learning grands.
And then Prof. Ken Yiu reported the undergraduate
scheme in computing and AI.
After that Prof. Yixin Cao briefed the postgraduate
programmes.
Then the Invited Talk by Prof. Lei Chan (Dean of
Information Hub, HKUST (Guangzhou)) and his topic entitled “Data Science for AI
and AI for Data Science”.
He discussed the benefits of data management for AI
and then pointed out challenges including “data preparation”, “optimized model
training and inference” and “model validation and explanation”.
Finally, Prof. Lei Chan mentioned the recent research
on data for AI and discussed its challenges.
Prof. Li presented COMP souvenir to Prof. Chan for appreciation
of his sharing.
I also took a photo with Prof. Lei Chan and Prof. Li
Qing for memory.
Before the lunch, Dr. Raymond Pang, Dr. Jeff Tang and
I took a photo in front of the conference banner for memory.
We had a lunch together.

In afternoon, Prof. Allen Au reported research
assessment exercise (RAE) which is a comprehensive peer review on research
quality of UGC-funded universities.
And then Prof. Henry Chan reported the collaboration
and partnership.
After all reporting and discussion, the guest speakers
Prof. Lui Sha, Prof. Allen Au and Prof. Jieming Shi shaed the topic named “Reaching
for the Top”.
Prof. Lui Sha shared the common best R&D practices
topics to us.
And then Prof. Jieming Shi shared grant applications
and teaching experience.
Lastly, Prof. Allen Au shared the working productively
with industry. His lesson learn was “Do not work for free: value your expertise
and time!”
In night, we had dinner in the hall. So many research students
joined together!
