ISO 9001:2008 Implementation Seminar

The seminar was co-organized by HKQAA, HKSTP and HKSQ on 11th September 2008. There was the second seminar for ISO 9001:2008 version held in HKSTP. We were delighted to have Dr. Nigel Croft as speaker for this topic. He is a Chair of IAF Task Force and Coordinator of the ISO/TC 176 management team for ISO 9001:2008 implementation, member of the Chairman’s Strategic Advisory Group of ISO/TS176, and Associate Technical Director of HKQAA.
The event was very successful with more than 100 participants and I would like to summarize some key points for sharing purpose.

After introduction of Technology Support Centre of HKSTP (http://www.ic.hkstp.org/) and Hong Kong Society of Quality (http://www.hksq.org/), Dr. Nigel Croft started his seminar.

In Part 1, the management system and the ISO standards development process were introduced. For management system, it separated into three components including Hardware (e.g. equipment), Software (e.g. methods) and Humanware (e.g. people). Then he introduced the structure of ISO/TC 176.

In Part 2 and 3, Nigel discussed about the changes of the ISO 9000 standards and ISO 9001:2008. He told about the next generation of “ISO 9000” as follows:
· ISO 9000:2005 already published but no major changes expected for 2008/2009.
· Small changes to ISO 9001 (we call it “amendment”) and will be published in Nov 2008.
· More significant changes to ISO 9004 (we call it “revision”) and planned to be published in late 2009

Based on user survey in 2003, approximately 80% of respondents were satisfied with the ISO 9001:2000 standard. However, the most commented clauses/areas of confusion are shown as follows:
· 4.1 General requirements
· 4.2 Documentation
· 6.2 Human resources
· 7.3 Design and development
· 7.5 Production and Service Provision
· 8.2 Monitoring and Measurement
· 8.5 Improvement

For standard interpretations, please visit http://www.tc176.org/ for details.

Main changed clauses of ISO 9001:2008 (based on FDIS)

Details will be placed in HKSQ website (http://www.hksq.org/slide.htm) or visit http://www.iso.org/.

What should you do now?
1. Review the changes and check how they apply in your company
2. If you understand the changes, you might need to make small change to your QMS.
3. Upgrade in next surveillance visit

ISO 9004:2009 was mentioned in the last part. The new title of ISO 9004:2009 was proposed to “Managing for the sustained success of an organization – A quality management approach”.

At last, Nigel concluded the following points:
· ISO 9001:2008 is scheduled for publication in Nov 2008 that
No major changes and no major impact
2 year “transition” period
· Major revision to ISO9004 scheduled for 2009
Sustained success of an organization.

One interested interpretation of PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) is Please Don't Change Anything.

Finally, I represented HKSTP to give a suvenir to Nigel.
