Chinese Traditional Wisdom for the Study of Knowing People II (中華智慧知人學 II)–Lecture 6 & Song Practice

The last class of Prof. Pang’s (彭泓基教授) course named “Chinese Traditional Wisdom for the Study of Knowing People II” (中華智慧知人學 II) was held on 1st Nov 2025. Before starting, Minda and I took a photo with classmates including Mr. Victor Au, Mr. Andy Law and Mr. Ben Tsang.

In the beginning, Prof. Pang reviewed the wisdom of the I Ching on conduct that is overall principles for our behavior and management.

Then he mentioned the ten victory conditions of Cao Cao (曹操) in the Battle of Guandu (官渡之戰).

And then Prof. Pang employed the ten victory conditions framework and four win theory to analyze Xi Jinping and Trump (習近平與特朗普).

After that he introduced the Sun Tzu's Art of War and key indicators included (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and Discipline (道,天,地,將,法).

Then compared US and China in the following dimensions including leadership, managerial skills, market/share, effective control/management, team quality, staff skill sets and motivation.

Finally, Prof. Pang introduced the western management thinking in Power and Influence. Firstly, he said the basic concepts were influence, power and authority. Power is a zero-sum game. Power is the source of influence that involved the relativity of power, the balance of power and the domain of power.

And then he introduced some method of influence including force, rules & procedures, exchange, persuasion, ecology and magnetism (emotional relationship).

After the break, Prof. Pang reviewed different Divination Tools including I Ching card, Plum Blossom Divination (梅花易數), “Lingqijing” (靈棋經), Innate I Numbers (先天易數) and Xiao Liuren (小六壬).

Lastly, Prof. Pang taught us to use Innate I Numbers (先天易數) for divination.

Firstly, use asking table to select your question and then use three dice to form a number and divided by 8. The remain number (e.g. 4) is in Hundred location and matched to the corresponded hexagram ().

Then use sky table and your hexagram as start point, count clockwise of the remaining number that find the next hexagram’s number as Ten location (e.g. 6). Finally, you need to identify the hexagram based on what question you ask and then count clockwise using the previous remaining number. That number is unit position (e.g. 1). My question is asking partnership and the number is 461 and then search the library for the indication.

After the last lecture, we had lunch together. near Prof. Pang joined our lunch.

Afterwards, we went to Kitsen’s music room to practice Harmony (和聲/和音) again.

Ms. Hin Hin Wong also joined us. (Left 1)

We song good under Kitsen’s leadership!
